Have any pregnant ladies had the vaccine / will you?

I’ve just found out I’m pregnant (4 weeks) and days later I got invited for the vaccine..I’m only 32 and didn’t think I was in a particularly high risk category but do have asthma so that could be why. My doctors didn’t know I was pregnant before sending the invite, I’m really hoping they will still let me have it to be honest due to potential covid risks and pregnancy.

The UK guidance seems vague and I think says if in a high risk category you can have it after discussion with a doctor. Has anyone else been in this situation and did you decide / did they let you go ahead?

I had the same thing as I was booking my booking appointment with the midwife I was told I was on group 6 (29 and didn’t realise I was high risk either) but they then asked the my GP and said to not have it whilst pregnant so I’d definitely speak to your GP 1st

Jessa89 · 28/03/2021 17:45

Ah no that’s a shame, it’s weird as the US is actively prioritising all pregnant women and I think Israel but not routine in the UK yet. Hoping they’ll still let me have it so don’t have to stress about catching it pregnant but sounds like maybe not!

I know I think it’s because there hasn’t been enough testing on having it whilst pregnant, I would of had it straight away otherwise, a nurse I know also said not advised to have it but I have read people on this forum have had the vaccine whilst pregnant so I don’t know if different areas are giving different advice that’s why is speak to your own GP 😊

No and no.

Peacefulspirit · 28/03/2021 19:52

Hi,
I’m a midwife and I had my first vaccine when I didn’t realise I was pregnant. I actually had my second yesterday after a long chat with some doctors on my team. I’m happy with my decision, as other have said they’re actively promoting it in the US, there’s no evidence to suggest it causes harm, if anything there is some to suggest it offers baby some protection. I thought well if I’ve had one I might as well have the second! You’ll need to give consent if you go for it.

CocoLady · 28/03/2021 20:00

Whichever vaccine please don't have it !
Just wait ! They don't test vaccines on pregnant women do they!

I've had my first and getting my second vaccine next week. It's the right choice for me and I feel much safer. I'm a healthcare worker and have had GD in previous pregnancy (too early to know for this one yet). I understand why most are choosing to wait but I'm happy with my decision x

Ritamarie85 · 28/03/2021 20:16

I live in Texas. Yes they are giving it to pregnant ladies here. I’m planning on getting mine next week. I’ve spoke to 2 OB’s here, my own and a high risk one, and both have said they believe pregnant ladies should take it. I also spoke to my friend who’s an OB in the U.K. and she agreed. She also says that OB’s in Scotland are pushing for it to be more available for pregnant ladies at home.

Parentpower20 · 28/03/2021 20:21

There is an absence of data as pregnant women aren’t allowed in research trial. There isn’t anything to say it is unsafe but it can’t be guaranteed. That’s pretty much true of almost all medications in pregnancy though. So it’s a cost - benefit analysis. My nurse sister in law decided to have it because she was more worried about COVID than the possible risk of the vaccine. Hopefully since the US and others are allowing it in pregnant women, there will soon be enough evidence that it is safe to encourage pregnant women to have it as they are at much higher risk.
Speak to your doctor, but my sister in law was told it was entirely her decision 🤷‍♀️

Appletreehat · 28/03/2021 20:22

I'm not pregnant but my Dh and I want to start ttc for a 2nd DC soon, I won't be getting the vaccine during this time or if I get pregnant.

Bythefire90 · 28/03/2021 20:33

I’ve had it in pregnancy, wasn’t intentional (as I didn’t know I was PG I’m afraid). Hoping everything will be ok, I’ve been advised it’s up to me to get the 2nd jab but ethically they can’t test to see if it’s safe in pregnancy so just don’t know the risk so I’ll probably wait until after I’ve had the baby

OPTIMUMMY · 28/03/2021 21:19

Yes I have had the AZ and had no side effects at all. It was very much my own choice and I weighed up the situation after speaking to both my gp and midwife and reading up about it. However much of it came down to knowing people who had been hospitalised due to Covid (a good friend who is the same age as me had a temperature for 12 days as well as irregularities with her heart as a result) another lost her mum to Covid. I am also considered higher risk though not enough to shield. Maybe if I’d only known people with mild cases it would be different, but I’ve also had the flu in a previous pregnancy and it was horrendous. Catching Covid whilst pregnant wasn’t a risk I wanted to take for my baby or myself (especially the thought of a continued high temperature). I felt that with my job and my own children in school that it was only a matter of time before I would catch it so I felt it was a choice between unknown risk of the vaccine (despite there being absolutely no logical reason for it to be an issue for pregnant women, just a lack of testing) against the very well known risks of covid whilst pregnant, add to that the anxiety of catching it and being unable to work from home etc. The US, Israel and Ireland are all recommending it for pregnant women.

Jessa89 · 28/03/2021 22:22

Thanks for the replies everyone, I’m going to call my GP and midwife tomorrow and I’m really hoping they’ll give me the choice. I really don’t want to spend the rest of the pregnancy worrying about catching covid and the associated risks. I’ve spent the day reading as much as possible and there doesn’t appear to be any known risk, whereas there are known risks with covid. Reassuring to hear no side effects @OPTIMUMMY my mum had it last week and felt absolutely awful but only for 24 hours which seems a lot better than the illness itself!

Nope not a chance.

mouldygrapes · 28/03/2021 23:34

Yes I have had it. Pregnant healthcare worker.
There are ongoing studies in the US (where as PP said it is being actively recommended) showing good antibody response in pregnant women, and passage of antibodies to baby

Kayleighxo · 29/03/2021 05:56

I've had my first jab back in February and due my second jab in may. However only just found out I'm pregnant so probably won't get my second :(

everdaymumma · 29/03/2021 08:09

I had my first jab knowing I was pregnant and planning my second next week. Im a healthcare worker so the risk to myself and baby is higher. There is no evidence against it and in some trials women actually received it not knowing they were pregnant and are being followed up - currently I believe they havnt had complications. Just remember being pregnant puts you in the high risk category so if you arent going to have it I would be extra careful with your precautions even as everyone else eases out of lockdown. I do totally understand why people wouldnt have it but add to your decision making you may be admitted to hospital for delivery for up to a week if you have an emergency section/induction etc so greater risk of being exposed at that point.

8dpwoah · 29/03/2021 08:14

I was able to have access to it in early pregnancy through work but declined (as I'm WFH and have no other risk factors) but if I get the opportunity to have it nearer to my third trimester, when the risk of harm from covid is substantially greater, I will take it. By then I am hoping there will be more data and perhaps even updated guidelines, and I will feel it's worth the 'risk' but my circumstances in early pregnancy, when everything in the foetus is developing, meant I wasn't comfortable with it and the RCOG guidelines supported that. If I had been high health risk or doing my normal job role I absolutely would have taken it, though. For now I am being cautious and just adding in seeing family outdoors to the list of things that I am comfortable doing.

Noodles4Me · 29/03/2021 09:40

I'm not going to have it whilst pregnant but may if offered after birth.

If you won't risk eating Brie for fear of hurting fetus then I wouldn't risk a yet fully tested vaccine.

(Not anti-vax btw, and I have had Brie albeit baked)

May2021Mummy · 29/03/2021 16:20

I'm in the UK and my GP and midwife advised against having it while pregnant

SlipperFeet · 29/03/2021 16:25

A friend of mine is currently 18 weeks and was called for hers but when she got there the staff wouldn't do it because she is pregnant.

Ginevere · 29/03/2021 16:25

I’m 26 weeks and got my text last week. After speaking to 119 they said I can call and book over the phone anytime of decline it now, so that’s what I’ve done- when I clicked decline I was given options for why, and ‘pregnancy’ was one of them.

YawnyOwl · 29/03/2021 16:28

No way x

CorianderBee · 29/03/2021 21:16

They have no idea what effect it will have on a fetus

Fishingforhappiness · 29/03/2021 21:21

I've had it. I'm now 30 weeks NHS worker with a respiratory condition. I'm high risk and in a high risk job. My consultant advised me to have it. Its not a live vaccine and I haven't had any nasty side effects. I have had a few colleagues who had the vaccine and subsequently had thier babies, all fine.
