Placenta Previa

Hi, looking for some info from anyone who has had a previa in a pregnancy before as I’m feeling very confused! Sorry this may be long but really hoping someone can please help me.

Found out placenta completely covering cervix at 20 week scan, had first big bleed at 24 weeks and spent just under a week in hospital at which point I had steroid injections and was spoken to about baby needing to be delivered extremely early. Baby stayed put, and got discharged home on rest. Small bleed at 26+6 no admission needed. Next big bleed at 28 weeks again kept in labour ward, fasted etc in preparation for emergency section. Lucky again as bleeding resolved and baby still in there! Kept in hospital for 4 days and was allowed home on the basis I wasn’t left alone. Reconfirmed at this stage placenta still completely covering cervix.

During both admissions seen a couple of different doctors who all spoke me through the dangers of going into natural labour and risk this could have to mine and baby’s life, and safest thing is for section to be arranged for 35-37 weeks. Initially was upset by this (first baby and had hoped to go au naturale like some sort of magician who doesn’t feel pain ha!) but got my head around it as want what’s best / safest for baby (and of course myself!).

So my routine antenatal care I receive at my local hospital, which is small and doesn’t actually allow delivery unless completely straight forward pregnancy, so when I have been admitted to hospital and seen Drs it has been the next closest hospital 30 mins away. At 32 weeks had a scan at my local hospital to see the midwife & dr there to discuss options and get section date. At this point the midwife doing scan felt the placenta has cleared slightly, and now 2.3cm away from cervix. The Dr took 2 minutes to speak to me and just said “things look fine now so we aren’t concerned as you’re 3mm outwith the risk area”.

I am now 34 weeks and have another appointment for a scan in a week. I am just really struggling to get my head around it all now, I have felt the care from my local hospital has been very dismissive. I’m no genius but I know 3mm is an absolutely minuscule amount, I just don’t understand how they can tell me that 2cm away would be a complete no go, life threatening, etc etc but 2.3cm is no problem and I’ve to crack on? Was also told at most recent appointment I still need to be rested as at risk of further bleeding!!!

I am hoping someone else has been in a similar position, I just don’t know what to do for the best or what my options are and feel so confused by it all. In addition to this the baby is measuring 98th percentile so is a wee chunk.

The RCOG has guidelines on PP. You should read it. I think you are outside the area of risk.
(I have had PP twice and made it to term once and once I didn’t).

It is brilliant that you are now 34 weeks and have had steroids, plus a big baby.
In your shoes I would not go for a vb but push for an early section. I would want a date booked for 37w latest.
My pp baby came at 36+3 and is now 9. He’s currently playing Minecraft.
Good luck!

@ChaBishkoot Thank you, I have had a look at that, been trying to read up as much as I can to have as much info for my next appointment with the Dr. I have gone from being in the risk zone to now outwith by 3mm which just seems such a small amount to be the difference between “risk of fatality” and “it should be safe” . Did yours resolve either time?

@Alfaix the dr’s and midwives at the hospital I was admitted to / will be delivering have all said the same, really positive at getting to this stage! It just feels very conflicting to go back to my own local midwifery unit for my appointments and be spoken to as if nothing has happened lol!

Thank you, that’s what I am swaying towards too. It just feels as though the benefits of elective cs outweigh the risks of a vb. Love hearing positive previa stories! It’s such a scary time isn’t it? I hadn’t ever realised the placenta could cause so much bother! X
