Retroverted uterus

Hi ladies!

So I had my first scan today privately at what I thought was 6+3 going from the first day of my last period but they seem to think I'm at 5+6.. she had some trouble finding my ovaries and baby as I have a retroverted uterus..?

I've never heard of this before but wondering if it's caused and problems or complications in pregnancy or if it's just another thing we have to deal with 😂

Beating heart was seen and both ovaries looked healthy. I'd gone in for a scan last week as I'd had bleeding and pain on my left side and they confirmed a cyst but nothing to be seen today as it's just dispersed hence the bleeding. Xx

It's just a description of the placement of your uterus. It's not an abnormality or an issue at all. It can mean that scans and smears etc need you to tilt your pelvis a bit to help them see things but it's not at all unusual.

@CroydianSlip

Oh really? That's great, thank you! It always sounds so much worse than it is when it isn't what it's supposed to be lol x

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
retroverted uterus here, its really far tilted back, I had a luittle op on my cervix years ago and the poor nurse was nearly kneeling on the floor trying to find cervix!
Anyway I've had 4 babies all term, all vaginally no issues.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Also a retroverted uterus! Smears are a nightmare and I get sent to colposcopy for them. 2 babies later and both elective c-sections, like another poster has said it's just the position of your uterus, welcome to the elite club!

40% are retroverted , it's very common and the norm.

You would only find out at a smear or a early pregnancy scan as most of the time is has zero effect on your life unless it's very tilted (less than 1%).

At my smears they just ask me to put a fist under my back to tilt my pelvis so they can see.

Sometimes a pregnancy can tilt it forward and it will remain this way after, or sometimes it will tilt back.

It's harmless Smile

I have one too! Apparently mine is also tilted. For smears, examinations etc I have to put my fists under my bum to change the angle for the nurse/midwife 😁 my pregnancy was fine; I was induced but baby's head was not interested in engaging, so nothing to do with the angles x

I have quite a bad retroverted uterus which also tilts to the left, has got worse with having large pregnancies too. I've had 4 healthy term pregnancies and 19+4 atm. I have had quite a lot of miscarriages too but can't say if it's related or not. It does make early scans quite difficult, abdominal are terrible and I have to put clenched fists under my hips for transvaginal (have to do this for smear test too). By around 12wks scans are much easier for them to do as the uterus moves forward, was a bit earlier with my twins though. It doesn't cause any problems later in pregnancy or with delivery.

DramaAlpaca · 27/03/2021 23:02

I have one too. It's never caused me any problems with pregnancy or childbirth (I have three DC). It can cause smears to be awkward unless I do as another poster said and put my fists under my bum to raise it.

StillWeRise · 27/03/2021 23:09

another one here, I was told that it can make you more liable to miscarry but never happened to me, 3 pregnancies inc twins, no issues and all vaginal deliveries. It is hard to locate my cervix and back in the day I had a lot of trouble getting a diaphragm (google it Grin) to fit but otherwise no problem. Enjoy your pregnancy !

SallyOMalley · 27/03/2021 23:13

Me too! 2 kids (one c section, one not), many smears. I didn't even know until a nurse mentioned it at a smear. In my experience, no problems at all :)

Mine was retroverted and the baby was hard to find at 7 weeks. It was in normal position by 12 weeks.
