Alcohol when pregnant

I know the official guidance is that zero alcohol is the safest option but there hasn't been research on small amount of alcohol in pregnancy and apparently 80% of women drink something whilst pregnant.

I'm not looking for judgment here but in both of my pregnancies I've drunk a very small amount- like one small glass of wine per week sipped or a few sips on husbands glass.

What do others do and how much- be honest!

@Bumblebee1980a so you're saying that the amount of stress that would cause cortisol levels too be high in the child, high enough to cause long term trauma in the child coukd be "cured" by a glass of wine a week?
You are coming up with points that you can't prove.
My birth sons mom drank in her pregnancy. I have proof infront of me every day that alcohol affects a child's life in the form of fasd.

That is truly awful. No I said one small glass of wine now and again during the second or third trimester is ok. Please don't put words into my mouth.

bleachblondemom · 28/03/2021 22:01

I had the odd small glass of wine/fizz or a shandy when pregnant. Did my baby no harm. Or sometimes if I was having non alcoholic wine I’d put about 50ml of real wine in it to make it taste better 😂

TomRipley · 28/03/2021 22:20

15 years ago with my first I drank half a Guinness a day from about 3 months.
Then a glass of wine on my birthday and at Christmas.
I can't remember whether it was a doctor or midwife but definitely a Heath professional that recommended the daily Guinness for an iron boost. I think it was something Gwyneth Paltrow was doing too!

I've since had two more children (4 and 10 months) and didn't touch a drop.

dontsaveusername · 28/03/2021 22:25

Didn't drink at all. Not worth it

This can't be true! 😯

My eldest is about to turn 14. No way was anyone recommending drinking in pregnancy then, let alone half a Guinness.

Are you sure you didn't pop back to 1950s Call the Midwife to have your firstborn? 🙄

user7891011 · 28/03/2021 22:53

I wonder peoples view on weed during pregnancy? I smoked daily before pregnancy then had one spliff in 3rd trimester in pregnancy and havent had any since son was born. I don't know anyone else who smokes it so would be interesting if anyone here does

Babyjune21 · 28/03/2021 23:11

@Bumblebee1980a @Nesski @JumperooSue

Oh yes I’m so small minded that I don’t want to harm my baby with something that kills people every year drink ! It says a lot about a mother who would risk it for a drink and also a lot about a mother that would support such a thing

Regardless if it’s one small glass or not why why would you do it for your own selfish gain ... the baby gains nothing so the only person gaining out of selfishly putting booze into your body is yourself it’s that simple

Luckyelephant1 · 29/03/2021 00:05

For those that choose to drink and keep saying they have a small glass here and there, I don't judge as it's your choice but I don't really get what the point of 'one small glass' is.

If you're drinking it for taste reasons then there's so many non-alcoholic options out there now. And if you're drinking it to feel the effects of getting tipsy, does 'one small glass' even achieve that? So what even is the point? Confused

MimiDaisy11 · 29/03/2021 00:22

My mum drank and smoked as normal throughout all 3 of her pregnancies. My Nan the same both times. All fine. And I know others who have as well

So is the conclusion that smoking and drinking doesn't do any harm? Or is a sample size of 2 not a good way to draw conclusions in general? I mean I know someone in their 80s who started smoking when they were 15. Does that mean smoking doesn't shorten lives?

EvilOnion · 29/03/2021 00:26

@EarringsandLipstick I agree, with you.

I was pregnant with my eldest 15 years ago and had "chronic anaemia", I told my Doctor that my Gran had mentioned Guinness and she pointed out that "that theory went out with the dark ages" and is get more iron from some frozen peas or a daily bowl of rice crispies!

I'm not sure why anyone would think a woman who scalds her vag with a Kaercher is some sort of pregnancy guru ConfusedGrin

EvilOnion · 29/03/2021 00:28

Excuse the typos - I think my needs are kicking in 🤣

EvilOnion · 29/03/2021 00:30

MEDS not needs - I think I needs my bed 🤦‍♀️

woooooohhhhhh · 29/03/2021 00:43

Oh god I don't think I could stomach alcohol- heartburn, nausea! My body totally rejects it Grin

I don’t think it says anything about a mother or other Mother’s that “support” it. It’s a glass of wine not binge drinking but then I’ve never felt the need to judge other women for their choices but that’s just me. Continue being the patron saint of motherhood it must be glorious being so faultless you can judge so openly..

Cafeaulait27 · 29/03/2021 06:22

I haven’t - but I miss it so much! Love a cocktail or a glass of wine with dinner.

I’ve taken to sniffing my husbands glass if he has one, or sometimes I take the lid off a bottle of tow Maria we have and sniff it haha... help

MaMaD1990 · 29/03/2021 06:32

I had literally one sip of my dad's new wine at Christmas when I was pregnant. Others I know would have the odd small glass at a celebration. Neither here nor there to me!

EmmaOvary · 29/03/2021 07:08

Tequila as soon as I woke up, couple of pints throughout the day. Of vodka. Followed by some meths chasers, then a few cheeky bottles of wine and a round of shots to get to sleep.

Saoirse82 · 29/03/2021 07:24

Personally I wouldn't, I would feel too guilty. However, I feel guilty anyway because I'm on pregabalin which is a FDA class C drug in pregnancy so I feel I'm in no position to judge anyone.
My mum and I spoke about this yesterday and when she was pregnant with me and my sister in the 70s and 80s there wasn't the same knowledge around alcohol and pregnancy so she continued with her 3 ciders on a Saturday night, my aunt said she did the same. So I'm assuming many of us are born to mothers who had a few drinks throughout their pregnancies. My mum said maybe that's why the babies were much smaller back then, all the smoking and boozing mothers!

Babyjune21 · 29/03/2021 09:11

@JumperooSue yeah I do rest easy at night knowing I haven’t put my unborn child at any risk for my own selfish gain , you’ve never judged another woman ... someone get this lady a blue Petter’s badge , you’d 100% judge another mum if she was beating her child in the middle of the street putting them in harms way ... so I am just judging mums that put their unborn child in harms way not even remotely sorry for judging you for supporting it as a choice

Your comparisons are always so hysterical. You’ve so far compared a pregnant woman having a glass of wine to pouring a newborn a glass of wine and making it drink it. Now as I said I don’t judge women’s choices, you’re saying I’d be okay with someone beating up a kid in the street🙄

You’re going to continue to be hysterical and ridiculous so let’s just leave it there. You judged me and I’m totally at peace with that.

brushlaptop · 29/03/2021 10:23

I do not think women should be judged for their parenting decisions AT ALL- breast, formula, natural birth, c section, WHATEVER but drinking alcohol while pregnant will always always be dangerous and yes I will judge people for doing it because it is NOT safe at any level. There is SO MUCH research on this I don't get what people don't understand about not drinking alcohol while pregnant?!?

Babyjune21 · 29/03/2021 10:39

@JumperooSue what ever makes you feel better about your awful option , I’m glad your at peace with supporting mothers to drink while pregnant you sound like a terrible person

pigglepot · 29/03/2021 10:51

Wow ok this thread has really taken off! Is there a way to press the delete button?! It sounds like it's a really mixed bag of some people drinking a small amount and others completely abstaining. In my friendship group it's probably about 50/50.

I'm not going to comment on this thread further as I don't want to get lynched by the MN mob for saying the "wrong" thing.
