Help!! Pregnancy of unknown location

user1473880439 · 27/03/2021 11:15

Hi all,

Has anyone ever experienced a pregnancy of unknown location and had a positive outcome? I’ve been told I have a pregnancy of unknown location as my HCG levels are not doubling but rising slowly and also nothing to be seen on scan. I am around 4 weeks

Sorry you're going through this OP. I was diagnosed with a PUL. I was 7 weeks so ended up with surgery (tube removal). they did three scans over 10 days, only on the last scan were they able to locate it. You may find at 4 weeks they give you the methotrexate jabs. Sometimes it can resolve itself so medical intervention isn't required, just monitoring.

I know that's probably not much comfort as the pregnancy won't continue but you will be looked after and things will get better.

Unfortunately any pregnancy not in the womb isn't viable. It may be an ectopic where the embryo implants in the fallopian tubes rather than the womb. Fortunately as you are only 4 weeks then it is likely treatable with methotrexate injections as PP has said and it shouldn't impact your ability to concieve again. Again as PP has said this is likely of little comfort to you and i'm really sorry you're going through this. I'm thinking of you in this tough time. Flowers

@Jericha @Mikamee

Thank you both for commenting ❤️ I just feel like I have a total information overload at the minute and cannot process anything ☹️ I was hoping that because it was still early stages that the pregnancy may still be viable as I was told by midwife low hcg and slow rising is sometimes conman early on in a viable pregnancy. However, I am still waiting on my 3rd lot of HCG results so I imagine I will know more then. Thank you both so much for your kind words and I’m so sorry for both of your experiences xx

My HCG levels were monitored for about 10 days before I was given Methotrexate. I was just over 6 weeks at the time (levels rising by 15-30%) & the pregnancy was never located. It is a horrible time and I really hope things work out for you, but if they don't I am now 8+5 with a little one in the correct place! So one PUL doesn't mean another xx

@ArcticSky

My hcg levels have risen from 91 to 138 😕 It’s not doubling the way they want it too

Your next blood results will tell you more. I've heard of women who were just slow starters & leves rose quickly after the initial draw. If it is bad news at least you are being monitored and they have caught it early. The waiting is the worst part, so look after yourself and make sure you get lots of TLC xx

@ArcticSky

I’m hoping I’m just a slow starter I’ve heard many stories like this also 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼. Just don’t want to jump into methotrexate if I don’t need to at this stage. Need to discuss options with them like timescale etc on Monday and hopefully my HCG starts to double by then instead of increasing by 48%

Sorry not got any personal experience to add at all, just wanted to give a hand hold really! 💐

Try and stay positive though, as PP said, I have heard of women starting off slowly but still being a viable pregnancy. At 4 weeks it may just now show on a scan yet. The waiting is definitely the worst part, but better to wait and be sure

@Lou98

Thank you so much I really appreciate it you’ve no idea ❤️ xx

@user1473880439 Hi I’m currently going through this at the moment and in complete limbo land. LMP 15/01, BFP 19/02 went for a private scan at what I thought was 8 weeks and was told it was a pregnancy of unknown location so I was referred to the hospital.

The hospital did another scan and took some bloods over 48 hours and confirmed that it wasn’t ectopic, the pregnancy is in my uterus, but my HCG levels weren’t doubling like they should, just slowly increasing. They gave me 10 days to wait and see if there’s any changes when they scan me again. Apparently what they were seeing was what they’d expect at 5.5 weeks which is way off my dates but my cycles are longer so I’m slightly hopeful. I’ve also not had any pain or bleeding, though I’m aware of missed miscarriages. My scan is tomorrow, OH is super positive but I’ve read too much online to not have have my hopes too high. It’s out of my control and whatever is happening is happening. Though I am praying it was a combination of a slow start and late ovulation!

Good luck to you at your appointment today

@Shell90

It’s horrible isn’t it being in limbo. Basically they wouldn’t listen to me today I’ve had another next lot of bloods done to measure HCG. It’s all maybes at the minute and it’s really confusing ☹️. I’m going to ask for one last scan before taking this methotrexate injection.

Best of luck to you, let me know how you get on xx

@user1473880439

Really confusing, I’ve gone to the hospital 3 times so far thinking I was going to get answers and each time it’s been maybes! Hoping I get some answers tomorrow morning

user1473880439 · 29/03/2021 12:01

@Shell90

That’s like me this is my fourth visit and I don’t have a clue whats going on. My levels are too low to see anything and my cycle is too irregular although I’m certain of ovulation and conception dates they still won’t listen to me and are pushing this methotrexate on me xx

Sorry OP, it's a really tough thing to go through. I had an ectopic pregnancy last summer and it took a while for them to realise where it was. I didn't have to take any drugs because the levels started to fall on their own and it was dealt with via 'expectant management', which effectively means they do nothing but keep an eye on you. I didn't have to have a tube removed and I fell pregnant six months later.

It's really horrible to go through it, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Wishing you the very best.

user1473880439 · 29/03/2021 14:54

@EmbarrassingMama

Sorry to hear ❤️, thank you. My levels have risen to 196 from 138. They have offered to monitor me to see if they begin to fall or else I can have methotrexate. Not sure what to do
