Sudocrem in pregnancy - Is it ok?

Firsttimehere · 26/03/2021 14:43

Just wondered really if it’s safe, i’ve used it almost everyday on my face (for spots) applying 2-3 times during the day and before bed since I became pregnant. I just assumed it was okay because I know it’s baby bum cream! Just wondered as I can’t see anything online whether it is safe or not? I bloody hope so with the amount i’ve used it!

Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks

It's fine.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/03/2021 15:47

Really?

Einszwei · 26/03/2021 15:50

Relax. You can't go through pregnancy analysing every single product you use and consume in daily life.

Chelyanne · 26/03/2021 15:52

Of course it is.

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 16:02

Oh no... offended some people. I’m a first time mum and genuinely was just wondering.... i’m not anxious it was just a general question as there was a long list of ingredients on the tub so wasn’t sure.

Lets all be kind Grin

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 16:04

Changed my name to the above as I was worried about the comments, but I am OP so save any confusion😊
Thanks for reassurance.

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 16:05

Thanks @Einszwei you’re right on that! It was just a general wondering and the only thing I found online was check with the dr before use and I thought that was a bit silly!!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/03/2021 16:06

Well I don’t think anyone has really been unkind but...it’s sudocream! It’s going to be a long and stressful pregnancy if you’re over thinking things like that!

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 16:12

I just mean the “really?” Comment made me feel a bit of an idiot, if someone responded to me like that in real life i’d feel the same. I get a bit worried about how things will be taken on here.

I’m not overthinking, was a general wondering and googled it and it said check with gp which I thought was a tad ridiculous so thought i’ll ask people with a lot more experience than me.

I think it’s fair what I asked Smile

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/03/2021 16:27

Well, anything that is actually NOT safe to use will say so on the label. Sudo cream is non toxic, that’s why people use it on their babies.

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 16:40

Not sure that’s correct actually. NHS website says you cannot use topical retinol, I have some lovely topical retinol cream on my dressing table and it doesn’t say not safe in pregnancy.

In my first post, you’ll see I mention the fact I know it’s used on babies, so i’m well aware of that. I was simply asking a question as I said, it says online “Ask your GP for advise before use in pregnany”

Chelyanne · 26/03/2021 16:42

I would have been buggered if it were bad in many pregnancies as older babies/toddlers needed it for nappy rash.

So long as you're not eating it you'll be 'right

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/03/2021 16:45

Fair enough but as a guide, if you’d put it on your baby surely it’s common sense to assume it’s safe for you. All the chemist/pharmaceutical websites online say ‘no known contraindications’ for pregnant and lactating women.

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 16:54

Thank you @Chelyanne i’d be buggered too haha! Definitely not craving that... some other weird stuff perhaps... but not that one

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 16:58

Tbh with you @SmidgenofaPigeon again, it it says check with your GP and i’ve said several times, I know that’s silly, i’d say my common sense is in check.

I was more thinking, does something I put onto my skin and get into my blood stream (if I does) effect the development of my baby if used in heavy amounts, of course if the baby is here already we know it’s safe to use because it’s nappy rash cream. I still think my question was fair, however your input is invaluable Grin

eloiseislost · 26/03/2021 17:02

@Greeneyesbiglashes Are you planning on using heavy amounts of sudocrem? 🤔

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 17:04

@eloiseislost if you saw my sore face you’d understand that I probs have and need to use heavy amounts lol

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/03/2021 17:05

Where does it say check with your GP? Do sudocream themselves say that? I think you’re being a bit defensive. It’s really obvious from looking at the properties of the ingredients online and on the pharmacist websites that there’s no issues with using it in pregnancy. Is it the anti septic property you were concerned about? I don’t know how it would cross the placenta, and most face creams and products we use (including most retinols) are not KNOWN to cause any issues with pregnancy either, but obviously the makers of these would rather totally err on the side of caution.

Einszwei · 26/03/2021 17:06

@Greeneyesbiglashes You sound like you will be a wonderful mother - you obviously care about this little one immensely. Remember that the things that impact unborn babies are always explicitly stated on packaging.

Even post birth, babies and kids ingest many things they shouldn't. Babies and children are very resilient by nature. Try not to be too concerned.

eloiseislost · 26/03/2021 17:09

@Greeneyesbiglashes I think heavy amount would be something like a lot a day. Your baby will be fine either way! 🙂

TheVolturi · 26/03/2021 17:13

Unless you're having it on toast, it's fine

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 17:13

It says in chemist 4 u online “ If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor or our pharmacist before taking this product.”

I’m not being defensive, I can assure you. It’s probably quite hard to read over the internet which is why I took you “really?” In an a bit of a rude way, perhaps I misunderstood, like I say hard to tell over text.

Not sure i’d agree it’s obvious, there a lot of ingredients and some I obviously haven't even heard of lol so how would I automatically know 🤣 must have missed that lesson in science.

I wasn’t concerned about any ingredient in particular as I didn’t know what each is. I also never said I was concerned I was more wondering. I actually wrote in my first post I assumed it was ok 👍🏽

Yeah of course they have the be on the side of caution. In terms of the nhs website though and retinoids it reads “ Topical retinoids are not suitable for use during pregnancy, as there's a risk they might cause birth defects” so I would obviously not take that risk, not sure any women would really if they read that. But that’s another product, and totally different obviously.

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 17:14

Aw @Einszwei that’s a lovely comment and really cheered me up!! Thanks so much Flowers

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 17:15

@eloiseislost oh I do put a fair but on haha! But thanks for the reassurance Smile

Greeneyesbiglashes · 26/03/2021 17:15

@TheVolturi not had that craving yet... i’ll let you know if I do!
