Hospital Bag - what type of bag?

This might seem a really silly question but what type of bag do you take everything in?

I’ve seen so many lists on what to pack but struggling to understand what type of bag. Some lists seem so long I feel like I’ll look like I’m moving in.

I’m due my second in may and am bringing a medium suitcase with a lock on it. It means my things will be safe when I shower ect, and also easy to move around as dh won’t be in much with the restrictions well depending on how they are at that point. I brought the same last time and was very glad of it. I used a small bag for Labour then and my case was locked away till I got moved to the ward, it worked well!

Whatever it fits in. There are no rules.

I used my baby bag (the one I'd use to take nappies etc. Out the house with) and put everything I thought the baby would need for the first 24hours in there (three baby grows, vests, nappies, blanket, ready made formula, hat etc)

Then I used a cabin sized suit case for my things. One side I used for ' equipment' (breast pads, maternity, nipple cream, toiletries) and the other side was for my clothes.

It made it easier for my husband / staff to find things (and me with the baby haze)

Babyfg · 25/03/2021 22:27

Oh my last baby was born in lock down and my husband was able to bring things we needed (mostly food 🤣).

And with my second I forgot to pack nappies 😳😳 and the midwives were happy to help out until husband came back with some.

So please don't panic about packing to move in or forgetting anything! It all works out in the end!

I took a cabin sized suitcase.

I'm using a hold-all ( small hold-all) for my bits and baby changing bag for babies bits ( my changing bag is more rucksack style though :) Iv attached pictures 😊

Pre-covid I had my normal 'handbag' (it's a fabric satchel but it has handbaggy stuff in it) and a backpack with me for my stuff. We then had a hand luggage/cabin bag thing in the boot with all the stuff for the baby. And another little bag with going home clothes also in the boot. And a food stash.

Good job really as I ended up being in for a week and only two days of that did I actually have a baby 😂 but the backpack/cabin bag was ideal for being easy to take from antenatal to delivery and then to postnatal and easy to take down to the car to top up with snacks and fresh clothes.

Weekend holdall bag and a small tote bag with lockdown there trying to get people in and out as quickly as possible

MiddleClassMother · 25/03/2021 23:01

I took a suitcase!

chelle862 · 25/03/2021 23:14

Cabin suitcase for me with packing cubes so OH could easily find things (I used labels) and changing bag for baby. All a complete waste of time, I was in and out within 12 hours and hardly needed anything I'd packed at all!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 25/03/2021 23:17

A bag that fits loads of stuff

Mary Poppins' bag preferably

Chelyanne · 26/03/2021 00:16

I have a weekend bag with wheels and extendable handle. Fit everything in for me and our twins last time, will be using again this time.

PFin · 26/03/2021 00:46

I took 3 bags in total. One was a small cabin bag with all my stuff, the other was thr changing bag I had picked for baby with all his bits and the third was like a small hold all duffle bag that I packed my snacks and drinks in (also had a few extra bits in here like extra pads, baby blanket that wouldnt fit in other bags). Didnt feel like I had too much packed and am packing the same way this time.

eternalflame2020 · 26/03/2021 07:00

@3rdtimemomma I have that changing bag too! Although they didn't have any fun patterns like that available when I ordered. I'm really happy with it.

OP I've got a smaller bag for baby and a medium sized suitcase for me and partner to share.

SnuggyBuggy · 26/03/2021 07:03

Cabin suitcase with wheels.

I really agree with subdividing the hell out of the contents, your clothes, your snacks, your toiletries, nappies, baby clothes, feeding equipment. It makes things so much easier for you.

3rdtimemomma · 26/03/2021 07:10

@eternalflame2020 oh really 😊 yeah I saw plain ones like a light grey one which I also really liked!

It's a good size aswel to fit everything in! 😊

GreenSlide · 26/03/2021 07:40

I took a big massive gym bag. I was in for 5 days so glad I had plenty of stuff. I didn't need that 5 pack of baby socks though Grin

Fleetw00d · 26/03/2021 10:28

I got a holdall from amazon with two big zipped sections on either side, two front pockets and an inside pocket. It's pretty structured and very spacious. All my stuff is in there and then babies stuff in her changing bag. I'm also taking a cool bag full of water and lucozade and ice packs, my boyfriend's going to have fun lugging all this up to the top floor haha!

Fleetw00d · 26/03/2021 10:29

This is the one I got, would recommend and will also be useful for weekend breaks etc
