Does a 7 weeks miscarriage just look like a clot?

I have just passed a massive clot 3cm by 2cm it's deep red and doesn't look like tissue, really confused if I just miscarried or not.. I am due to go to early pregnancy unit on Friday as they suspected a out if uterine pregnancy even though they could see a sac.

Hey OP, how worrying for you :(

When I had a miscarriage at a similar gestation, I passed several large blood clots (maybe about 5 or 6) but the actual sac that you pass when miscarrying is clear and like jelly so if you haven't passed anything like that then that's a positive sign.

I hope you get some answers on Friday, everything crossed for you

DifficultBloodyWoman · 24/03/2021 18:50

Yes. At 7 weeks, a miscarriage is a period. The sac is so small you wouldn’t actually notice it at that stage.

However, you can still bleed and pass clots during pregnancy without miscarrying.

💐 hope all goes well for you

My friend miscarried naturally at 7weeks. She passed clots regularly and then at one point she felt like an urgent need to go to the loo, but didn't quite make it. When she got to the loo there was a larger clot than the others in her sanitary towel and the makings of a very small embryo there. She knew before she had checked that that was it. She felt that clot different to the others.

If this has happened , I am so sorry for your loss.

I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks, so a tad later, but baby had stopped growing at just before 8 weeks.
I passed a lot of clots and then as another PP, it felt like something was kind of stuck, so I had to kind of force it out and when I went to the toilet, it was sitting on my pad.
As the other PP said though, it was more like a jelly kind of substance, it looked different from a clot and was quite a bit bigger

SleepyKitKat · 24/03/2021 19:07

I'm so sorry if it turns out you have miscarried. It's true it can just be normal to bleed a bit. And fingers crossed that's the case!
I mc at 8 weeks and it started as smaller bleed then clots and heavier bleeding. A couple of my later clots were definitely not usual period clots. They were heavy, denser and golf ball like.
Unfortunately I think you'll just have to wait and see and monitor. Sorry 😞

I miscarried at 7/8 weeks and I passed a large clot, had a scan and they couldn’t see anything in my womb so I assumed the big clot had been it, but then a day or 2 later I felt something coming out, went to the toilet and it was like a golf ball sized mass and it looked a funny grey colour. Not like the big blood clot that had come out earlier. I’m always confused when people say a miscarriage at that stage is just like a period, it was very different to me. I’ve never passed huge clots during a period or a big lump of grey tissue. I’m not sure how you could miss it really. I hope all will be well for you and it’s just some bleeding for another reason Flowers

Chelyanne · 24/03/2021 19:22

Doesn't sound great but try to hold on to hope.
I had a mc at 9+3 by lmp in July. Baby had measured 7+4 a week earlier with a hb on a private scan. It came out in a perfect ball of sac, the evening before passing baby I passed very large clots. I do have a picture, I know that may seem weird. Currently 19+1wk pregnant with another, thankfully doing well.

Cafeaulait27 · 24/03/2021 19:26

I was 9 weeks but baby stopped growing at 6. I had unbearable pain and passed loads of huge clots which I thought was it - but then I had a huge pain and passed something heavy which ‘plopped’ into the toilet. I gosh it out and it was the sac and embryo, about golf ball size. Then all the pain went away. The next day I got pains again and passed the placenta.

It doesn’t sound to me like you’ve passed anything like that, so may all be fine. Sorry you’re going through this and hope it’s all ok xx

I agree. I've had 2 between 8 and 10 weeks and they've never been just like a period. Been super painful, clots constantly and loads of tissue!
Toria33 · 24/03/2021 19:51

I've miscarried at 4 and a half weeks, 5 and a half weeks and I could definitely see tissue of done sort but hadn't got as far as this before. Pretty sure if it isn't gone it will be soon 😢😢 I've lost 4 massive clots I still don't see an egg jelly thing, it was possibly twins 😭

Having had 4 miscarriages I can say it’s absolutely nothing like a “period” the sac I passed at 7 weeks was near enough the size of my hand. And I felt the urge to push as well. The lining of my womb was liver coloured and the sac was more of a greyish tissue colour

@DifficultBloodyWoman nothing like a period at all!

Toria33 · 24/03/2021 20:23

Only had liver colour not seen any grey but it's now countless clots I don't think anything can survive this

I had a MC at 6 weeks and it was like a red blob of jelly. Different to a period clot, more formed and solid & about 5-6cm - prior to losing that I’d only had brown spotting and it was only after the large mass that that I bled more heavily but I didn’t have clots in that blood.

Toria33 · 24/03/2021 20:49

Too much blood hospital time

OP posts:
30not13 · 24/03/2021 21:00

So sorry to hear that you're off to hospital Flowers

Like others my mmc at 9 weeks was definitely not like a heavy period. I had contractions and passed a sac which was as described by others, then more painful contractions and what I assume was lining and placenta in liver like lumps.

I think we do women a huge disservice by continuing the myth of a mc being like a period :(

Chelyanne · 24/03/2021 21:27

Chemical pregnancies can be like a heavy period.
A pregnancy where a fetus is established is more like a mini labor, the further you get the worse it is. My last I had very painful contractions for days, once I passed baby I had max dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol together and they still had quite a kick to them.

RizzleRazzle · 24/03/2021 21:51

I don't think that's accurate, it's definitely not like a period and the sac is around 20mm at 7 weeks which I'd say most people would notice coming out of them
Toria33 · 24/03/2021 22:44

To clarify this is nothing like a period I have had 5 clots the size of my palm and 7 odd others in the space if 3 hours, as well as bleeding.. I kept getting a sensation to push as well. It was really painful and it was like needing to poop but not.. so I imagine it was contractions. I didn't see the baby but I can't imagine it's still there. Going for a scan and waiting for iv.

I’ve had 5 miscarriages, 2 at the 7-9 week mark.

To put someone’s mind at rest when they are worried, yes, it is like a period. Spotting doesn’t necessarily indicate a miscarriage.

To mourn with someone after confirmation, it is similar to a period but with more jelly or liver-like clots, more tears and the pain varies. What you see will vary depending on when the baby stopped growing. That doesn’t always match with the date you start bleeding.

Also worth bearing in mind that a spontaneous miscarriage (which hopefully this isn’t) is very different to a miscarriage managed with medication when clots are more likely due to the speed of the process and cramping is more intense.

I’m sorry you passed a sac nearly the size of your hand at 7 weeks and I hope you followed up with a doctor as that size would indicate you were closer to 11-14 weeks.

And, OP, I’m sorry you are going through this.

Emmelina · 24/03/2021 22:52

I’m so sorry lovely. You’re in the best place.

The sac doesn’t come out on it’s own. There is usually only one sac but multiple clots. The sac usually forms part of the clots and is covered in blood. It isn’t something that plops out of you and lands on top of a pad.

Please stop at tagging me in this. I was trying to be reassuring to the OP but this is bringing back too many memories for me.

Chelyanne · 24/03/2021 23:05

@Toria33 it is a horrific experience to go through. You take good care of yourself and take all the medication you need to lessen the physical pain as the emotional pain is more than enough to suffer with.
Condolences on your loss.

Toria33 · 25/03/2021 08:13

Sorry if anyone is getting upset by posts.
Got let out at 4am have to wait until Friday for my scan. Really shaking but nothing has been obvious.

OP posts:
Cafeaulait27 · 25/03/2021 09:29

I don’t think anyone describing their miscarriage experience is ‘accurate’ or ‘not accurate’.

For me - I passed a golf ball sized sac with an embryo inside and was in severe pain for hours, passing huge clots and blood gushing out. The next day I passed the placenta which was about the length of my palm. I was 9 weeks but it had stopped growing at 6.

It’s different for everyone though - I think it’s good to be honest about experiences so that people are aware of what may happen. I remember being quite upset that the midwifes had made out I could just sit on the sofa and take paracetamol while I miscarried, it was not like that at all and I wish I had been warned what to expect (and given stronger pain killers)

I really hope you don’t have to go through this OP - it was a very dark time in my life.

Look after yourself and fingers crossed it’ll all be ok xxx

jessstan2 · 25/03/2021 10:00

Yes it does, actually people usually pass several clots and bleed heavily. You can't see a recognisable foetus until later on.

I'm sorry you have been through this.
