Hi ladies, anxious FTM here! Have my 12 week scan tomorrow - what happens? Do I get to see a midwife and give a urine sample? I've had a bit of beige like discharge today which has filled me with stress so would like some reassurance from someone tomorrow. So nervous!

It's so normal to be nervous! I was so nervous when I had my 12 week scan with my first.

I don't think you give urine samples at scans if I remember right. It's the most amazing feeling seeing your little one wriggling around for the first time, good luck x

Yes you’ll be asked to give a urine sample Which they will test straight away. They will send off for analysis if there is anything unusual (has happened to me a couple of times but nothing was wrong). You’ll have your scan first and they will listen for the heartbeat. I also had blood taken at 12 weeks as my booking appointment was over the phone so it was the first opportunity. Then you see the midwife who asks a load of questions and you’ll be able to ask yours. Be sure to tell them about the discharge and they will let you know what to do. Good luck!

I can't remember exactly as it was a few years ago but I don't remember giving a urine sample or anything. I had to have a full bladder for the scan. I went to the desk and 'checked in' then waited to be called. Had my scan where she told me there was just one baby (😂) & my due date. Then pointed out various body parts whilst taking some measurements. I think that was about it
Good luck, I remember how worrying the wait for it is 💐 x

I just had the scan and the NT bloods done at mine. Urine etc were all done at booking 4 weeks earlier.

Kroptopbelly · 24/03/2021 16:39

No urine sample or booking here either.

Just confirm attendance at the desk, drink a pint of water then scan to confirm dates and that’s it.
In & out in about 20 minutes. (If all is well).

Urine was checked at my first booking app, scan was done by a sonographer and they don't check urine, they do an in depth look at your baby

If you don't want to know the sex of the baby, tell them straight away. I think most people want to know so they weren't careful enough to not reveal it to us, even though we'd requested to not know!

Depends on where you are going, if you’re going somewhere like kings it’s bloods and a scan which can take 40 minutes since they’re looking at every part of the baby including eye socket, palate, organs, limbs etc. Heart beat of course

I don’t think all hospitals do this though. Those scans focus on baby’s heartbeat and general stuff.

Good luck!

At mine it was scan with sonographer first then saw a hospital midwife who checked a urine sample, did a blood pressure check and a chat about general health/ history. Then did blood sample with a different midwife. It probably depends on how your local health board does things. It’s impossible not to worry before the scan but I found they were very reassuring and explained everything they were looking at and measuring. You might have to go for a walk/ go for a wee/ drink more water and wait if baby is in an awkward position and they need to get baby to move.

Hi OP, I had my 12 week yesterday. wWent for scan, was made to wiggle about lots, sent out to drink water, then re scaned and got baby measurements. Sonographer gave me a new due date, and sheet with scan details. I was then sent to midwife for bloods (having combined test) and she also talked to me about my urine test results from booking .. but I didn't have to give a new urine sample.
Good luck!

MimiDaisy11 · 24/03/2021 21:45

Like others say it can depend. Have you already seen a midwife before? I think some places do the booking appointment and scan together.

In my case, I'd already seen the midwife weeks before so for my scan appointment, it was just the scan and then after giving bloods (from a nurse other than midwife). The bloods are for the down syndrome and other tests so if you've agreed to have those tests they'll likely take blood tomorrow.

Choclover89 · 24/03/2021 23:29

I'd already had my booking appointment so it was just scan and then bloods taken with a separate nurse. Wasn't a midwife - my GP had asked me to get my blood pressure checked whilst there if possible but the lady said she wasn't trained to do it and I was embarrassed anyway just asking!

I'm sure with my first pregnancy I had to give a urine sample but didn't this time - can be a bit of waiting around between scan and bloods though if there are a few women being seen. Good luck!

Thank you everyone!!!! Just had my scan, and baby seems to be perfect! Nuchal fold nice and thin. Baby measured a bit smaller than anticipated by a couple of days (IVF pregnancy so know the date pretty much) so I'm going to stick with IVF dates and baby wouldn't stop wriggling!!!! Xx
