I am 12+2 and had my first appointment with a consultant obstetrician following a referral because of my high BMI.
Altogether I will now be on:
- Pregnacare max - so two green tablets and an omega 3 tablet
- Additional 5mg folic acid (been taking this since early pregnancy)
- 150mg asprin (started this already on midwife advice)
- Adcal-D3 calcium and vitamin D in addition to what comes in Pregnacare
- From 24 weeks I will need to inject myself daily with heparin to manage the risk of blood clots
- Because of daily spotting I've also been put on daily progesterone suppositories
I don't mind taking medication, but this seems like a lot.
I googled the progesterone suppositories and the heparin to get a bit more context and information about them, and for both there are studies published in credible journals seeming to say that they make no difference to pregnancy outcomes at all for people like me (i.e. no history of miscarriage or blood clots).
Would it be acceptable to question the consultant now and ask if I really need these medications? For blood clotting especially surely staying active and drinking plenty of water is enough, as I don't have any personal or family history of risk indicators. And the odds of a clot are 1 in 500 or so (I believe), so vanishingly small already. The thought of daily stomach injections of heparin for no reason makes me feel a bit peculiar.
Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences?
