Hypnobirthing/Labour Music that isn't too... hippy

Hi guys I'm doing hypnobirthing practice at the moment with the positive birth company digital pack and trying to start putting together a play list for labour/birth that realistically I will actually listen to.

I'm not a very woo yoga hippy dippy type person at the best of times and I can't stand people telling me to relax either. So I'm trying to find something that will suit me better than the mp3s on the pack, have quickly searched Spotify but most meditative/birth playlist stuff is still a bit woo for me too and I just know I'll get irritated 😂 seems to be a lot of pan flutes and digeridoos.

My normal music taste is quite fast paced dance, house garage type stuff mostly but I don't think this will help with the slow breathing exercises haha. If I Google birth playlists the most awful cheesy suggestions come up like anything from the 80s with the word Push in it ffs 😂

I might create a mix of slow and fast stuff and shuffle as I see fit at the time but does anyone similar to me have any recommendations? I can just see myself at the time getting frustrated with my past self for putting unsuitable music together haha.

I'm hoping any music that's calm and positive will do the job for me. I don't think it specifically has to be hippy didgeridoo music because that would do my head in more than anything else Grin
I'm probably going to pop on some Ariana Grande probably, I think anything you enjoy that can distract you and chill you out.

I have London grammar, the XX and some kings of Leon on my playlist!

Hi @Luckyelephant1 my last birth 14 months ago I had the most lovely hypnobirth and I didn't use any music, so you may find you don't either.
I was the same as you, I found the music to be very coombyya!😂.
In the end it was rather off putting so I mainly focused on my positive affirmations and breathing and managed to have a completely drug free and calm labour which I never thought would have been possible lol.
I know the music is a big thing for some but I honestly wouldn't worry to much about the music as long as you do your mps beforehand I does stick in your mind . Anyway good luck and I am sure you'll have a wonderful hypnobirthing experience 💖.

Main things to remember are keep up your oxytocin levels which can be done loads of different ways ie anything that makes u happy even objects from home that you love and keep your body relaxed and you'll do great 👍

If you download the PBC Freya app, the music they have on that is quite soothing. It was a great help during labour, I used it to help me breathe through contractions (I never got my head round calling them surges)

Otherwise, I just created a Spotify playlist of mostly instrumental piano music which I had on repeat, did the job for me.

I’d pick a vibe and stick to it, the danger with having a variety on shuffle is that you could get a run of songs that really do the magic for you and then something completely different comes on and you sort of lose your mojo a bit. If you use Spotify, their radio function is good for creating playlists based on one song, so maybe try that out with a few different songs that you like and see what you get.

AngeloMysterioso · 24/03/2021 10:36

Listening to comedy shows or funny podcasts can help too, anything that’ll make you laugh and get the oxytocin going

Chelyanne · 24/03/2021 10:39

I would personally go for my usual playlist, mostly rock and metal.

BertieBotts · 24/03/2021 10:40

I'd make two playlists, one with fast paced dance best type music and one with maybe chill out type dubstep, something like that? Then you can switch as you see fit.

It defo doesn't need to be whale song and pan pipes!

Thatwentbadly · 24/03/2021 10:42

I couldn’t stand the music on the Freya app. What about some chill out dance music or even the music you normally like. BBC sounds app has loads of stuff on so maybe try out some of there music mix. I remember stressing over this but I can’t remember having any during labour. I think I didn’t bother as it sensory overload.

AngeloMysterioso · 24/03/2021 11:04

I couldn’t stand the music on the Freya app.

Haha, different strokes for different folks I guess Grin I’ve got quite diverse taste in music but I do love a bit of mellow piano when I need to relax

eternalflame2020 · 24/03/2021 11:16

I've downloaded the Spotify playlist in attached photo. It's chill and calming without the panpipe/spa music vibe!

Hi there! I’ve been looking at potential music as I’m like you, don’t like anything too hippy! I found a Spotify playlist that’s actually a massage playlist. I’m most relaxed whenever I have a massage and am obsessed with the soft music so thought it could be a good option. So I’d say whatever music makes you feel happy or relaxed, make your own playlist or browse Spotify ☺️

xxxIntergalacticxxx · 24/03/2021 17:09

The Orb, Lemon Jelly, Boards of Canada?

EdithGrantham · 24/03/2021 18:51

I have a playlist which has Norah Jones, KT Tunstall, Eva Cassidy basically any acousticcy female artists, I'm hoping using it whilst I'm doing pregnancy yoga will help me associate it with relaxing feelings

Luckyelephant1 · 24/03/2021 20:31

Thanks guys maybe I'll try some chill out house type classics or something, or maybe a playlist I'd listen to on holiday with a cocktail in hand.

My normal everyday music taste is more adrenaline pumping fast type stuff so that would kind of be at odds with hypnobirthing 😂 but equally if I'm listening to music I find boring I know I'll get really frustrated. Definitely different strokes for different folks as a PP said!
