Aspirin following MMC’s?

WantingAnother · 22/03/2021 23:38

I’m just hoping for some advice. I had 2 MMC’s last year. One at 9 weeks in August which required surgical management and the other at 6 weeks in December for which I had medical management. I’ve just tested positive again and would really like to do everything I can to have a healthy baby. I feel like I can’t keep putting my body through this, I am 36 this year. DD is also 18 months old and we had wanted a smaller age gap- the first baby I conceived would have been born this month. So I think this will be our last attempt at another baby and a younger sibling for DD.

From reading some posts on Mumsnet a lot of people seem to be recommending the use of Aspirin following miscarriages. I’ve read that it doesn’t cause any harm to take it and that a lot of midwifes and clinics actually recommended it’s use. Can I ask your experiences please? Did anyone take it after miscarriages and feel it helped with a following successful pregnancy? Or has anyone taken it and still sadly had a loss and so don’t feel it did in fact help? Is there any advice anyone can share please or tips to help?

I know we are lucky regardless but would love another baby. Thank you for reading

I was prescribed it, it’s junior aspirin so not the usual dosage.

I was also prescribed progesterone suppositories to take three times a day till 20 weeks then twice a day.
Ask your GP about that, as I’m convinced the progesterone helped I had a lot miscarriages before I was put on progesterone.

@frazzledasarock Thank you, I’ll definitely call the Dr’s tomorrow and ask about Progesterone. I’m glad your pregnancy worked out for you, it does give me some hope Smile

The suppositories were called cyclogest.

I was 38 when I finally managed to safely have DC.

I’m so sorry for your losses.

I also had aspirin and progesterone and think that the latter especially was what made it stick following miscarriage and chemical pregnancy. I had specific symptoms relating to low progesterone though - short lutéal phase, brown spotting before period etc.

150mg aspirin for me. One DS following 2 miscarriages and expecting a second. I can only put it down to the aspirin.

Thank you for sharing! It sounds like aspirin is helpful but also Progesterone sounds like a good thing for me to take also! I spoke to EPU this morning and they don’t give it to pregnant women who’ve had losses routinely apparently. I’ll need a Dr’s referral to see a Consultant they said which I’m not sure if the Dr will do for me. And even if he does it’ll take weeks. I’m waiting for a call back later to ask.

To those who’ve taken it do I sound like a suitable candidate for Progesterone? Is there any other way to get it does anyone know?

Thanks again!

I was given Asprin because of 2 previous miscarriages.
I can't say whether it helped or not as I went on to have that child. But I've had 2 more babies since then (well, 1 and currently 38 weeks with the other)
And didn't take Asprin and was fine so I guess there's no way to tell

@WantingAnother I’m sorry for your losses.

I am 38 and have had 4 miscarriages in the last 12 months.

After the fourth I started myself on 150mg aspirin from ovulation and am currently 14+1 (the furthest I got previously was 9 weeks).

I had had lots of tests done after the 3rd miscarriage and nothing was picked up. My progesterone levels were great, but when I dsaw the EPU at 5+4 this time they prescribed me cyclogest progesterone pessaries to use twice a day until 16 weeks.

I told my midwife that I was taking aspirin and she said that was fine, she then checked with a consultant who confirmed that was the recommended dose and that they were happy for me to continue taking it and stay on it until into third trimester.

I will never know if it really was the aspirin or progesterone or a combination of both that have helped this pregnancy, but I feel it has helped.

Good luck.

Progesterone is very much an individual doctor thing, some doctors swear by it, some say there's no medical evidence it helps.

I was prescribed it immediately on pregnancy with my DC, then the next pregnancy I had moved so hadn't seen a midwife till I think about 8 weeks, she referred me to a consultant as I am high risk given my previous miscarriages, and he was horrified I hadn't already been prescribed cyclogest as per my previous successful pregnancy, and immediately prescribed it.

I honestly do think it was combination of the progesterone and junior aspirin for me, I was prescribed 75mg aspirin once a day.

WantingAnother · 24/03/2021 11:28

I spoke to the Dr this morning who is going to make the referral for me to the hospital. He’s never heard of Progesterone Pessaries being used at our practice though so he told me he needed to look it up. He said definitely that’s something for the hospital to prescribe and the he as a GP can’t.

He said he won’t guarantee that EPU will give me the Pessaries but fingers crossed they will as I suppose I’ll do anything that can help support this pregnant.

Also I’ve started taking 150mg of Aspirin. I at least feel like I’m doing something. Thank you all for sharing your journeys, it really does help to read your past experiences! If anyone else is happy to share please do Smile

Oh also can I ask, is it okay to take my Aspirin with my Pregnacare and other vitamins which I take at night or is it best to take them separately at a later time of day or with food?

Thank you

Hi, I’ve had three miscarriages. With the last one I took aspirin and miscarried, current pregnancy I have taken it and all seems well at the moment. I don’t think it causes any harm if you take it without doctor’s advice. It doesn’t matter if you take with food or other vitamins. Best to take it at night as later on if you haven’t gone into labour that day, then take it that evening - it’s better not to have blood thinners in you when you go into labour. I was advised to take it as I have lupus anticoagulant and I also take tinzaparin to thin my blood. If you don’t have this, then I know that some doctors recommended it anyway if you are overweight and/or older.

frazzledasarock · 24/03/2021 12:26

I was told to stop taking aspirin at 36 weeks pregnancy. They didn't want me to have it in my system if I went into labour.

WantingAnother · 08/04/2021 20:24

Just to update this thread I’ve been taking Aspirin daily. I wasn’t able to get any Progesterone as I couldn’t see a Consultant any time soon. But all is going well at the moment, I’m feeling awful and even got to see a heartbeat today as I had my EPU appointment. It’s early days as I’m only 7 weeks but hoping the Aspirin is helping!

All the best to everyone
