Amniotic fluid leaking 35 weeks

Hi,

I urgently need some advise 😭😩 before I call triage. I am 35 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I have been feeling huge amount of pressure in my pelvic.

My recent antenatal app. Midwife said he was head down and engaged.

I'm leaking yellowish fluid (definitely not pee) no particular smell to it. I had a bit of a small gushing sensation; when I went to the bathroom to check it filled my panty liner top to bottom but the liner isn't soggy or heavy.

I'm not too concerned as I know it's normal to leak a tiny amount given that I am 35 weeks and pretty much at the end of my pregnancy.

However I still have questions in my mind... how much is too much? And when is an appropriate situation to go and have it checked out? Does leaking amniotic fluid affect baby even if it's small amount?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Xx

Any leak is too much and can lead to serious infection. Please call triage

Sellandtravel · 22/03/2021 19:05

I had this with my second DD from 32 weeks. I was given steroid injections and had to stay for 2 weeks and then go every 2 days for blood tests to check for infection. I had a hind water leak. I definitely think you need to go and get checked out. Mine never filled a pad completely but they were worried enough to admit me. She was born at 36 weeks in the end, i was induced because the water levels got too low. She was fine 5lb 13ozs and no need for NICU.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 22/03/2021 19:09

You need to call them as any leakage they like to check for infection. Don't risk it OP. Call them and they will see you.

Springchickpea · 22/03/2021 19:11

It’s never normal to leak amniotic fluid. Definitely warrants a visit to the unit for assessment. The good news is that 35 weeks isn’t that early and if you are in labour it won’t be a massive deal. But please call them.

happytoday73 · 22/03/2021 19:12

Hiya OP.. I never lost any with my pregnancy until delivery.. Its how my youngest announced their imminent arrival 🤰🤣.

You definitely need to get checked out.. Please call and go in. They will want to ensure all OK, work out amount of loss etc and likely want to at least keep a closer eye on you.. Worse case steroids and delivery. Either way best to be in safe hands and at 35 weeks it's likely baby will need little help

DareIask · 22/03/2021 19:20

Yep... definitely needs checking.

Good luck x

cryh · 22/03/2021 19:22

Call straight away, it needs to be checked.

NewYearNewOldMe · 22/03/2021 19:25

Definitely get checked. A (massive) increase in watery discharge is completely normal, but if you are leaking amniotic fluid there could be a problem. Triage will asses.

Good luck

Mybobowler · 22/03/2021 19:29

As PP's have said - it's never normal to leak amniotic fluid! Go to triage now. My waters broke at 34 weeks and I was given antibiotics and closely monitored until induction at 37 weeks. After 35 weeks they may just induce you now? But either way, there's an infection risk to your baby if your waters have broken.

noraluv · 22/03/2021 19:35

Thank you so much ladies! I'm going to be giving triage a call now.

Greatly appreciate everyone's advice on here honestly thank you once again and I will follow up with an update when I can xx

My waters leaked a tiny bit 10 days ago, at 35 + 3. I've been in hospital ever since! Please go in and take your hospital bag.

I was given steroids, 10 days of antibiotics and will deliver the baby this Weds (due to placenta previa so they won't wait any longer). Others in here are kept until around week 38 after premature rupture of waters.

It'll be ok!

marthastew · 22/03/2021 19:38

Put on a pad which they may ask to see when you go in x

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 22/03/2021 20:21

Good luck op Flowers

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 22/03/2021 21:51

Glad you gave them a call and hope all is well!

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 23/03/2021 10:23

Hope you are ok op x

happytoday73 · 23/03/2021 18:27

💐 We are worried about you OP...

noraluv · 24/03/2021 14:54

Hey Ladies quick update, I've had a dye test done and all is well thank goodness 🙏 I've been extremely worried as I initially underestimated the severity of amniotic fluid leaking.

Turns out that it's just hormones and body preparing for labour as the baby's head is fully engaged! Watery discharge was all it was but I am immensely grateful for everyone here who encouraged me to get it checked out ❤️

You lovely ladies are precious gems and I wish you all the luck if you are pregnant or ttc xx

Fab.. 💐 ... Glad all is well and you now can prepare for likelihood of baby's slightly early arrival....

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 27/03/2021 20:19

Just came back to check this. So glad everything is okay and be sure to get checked for any leakage.
All the best and not long to go!

Thank you ladies ❤️

Another quick update! I will be induced on Wednesday morning (I'll be 37+ 3) 😩😅 due to baby's weight dropping and being low Papp-A with high blood pressure.

This pregnancy has by far been nothing BUT normal. But I am thankful for the support of my friends family and of course Mumsnet ❤️

Kindly appreciate any advice relating to induction. Doctor mentioned pessary for 24 hours to see if the cervix dilates and my waters break and then hopefully bring on contraction naturally. However if that is not the case I will be given a drip to fake the contractions... which Doctor mentioned that it's no walk in the park and could be really intense 😩😩

Just wanted to know your experiences or perhaps you are in the same position as me and want to share your concerns and thoughts!

I'm feeling like I'm in a dream? Am I really going to be meeting my son in a weeks time 🥲

My husband and I don't know how to feel or what to say or do!

Glad they picked up on this. Wow, a weeks time and you'll meet your son!

I was induced at 38 weeks. I had 2 tablets and one gel first round of pessary's and my cervix remained closed!
I then had to have a break for 24hours to start round 2. If round 2 didn't work I had to have a c section.
2nd pessary in on round 2 and I was in labour. 3cm dilated when they checked me and popped my waters. Dilated from 3-10cm in an hour (being an all fours really helped!). I had gas and air when pessary's were inserted as I found it uncomfortable not painful just uncomfortable.

If you need the drip then you can ask for epidural before being placed on the hormone drip. Take anything they offer you, it's glorious.

I had gas and air and pethidine which helped me sleep in between contractions. When you're being induced and pessary has been inserted do lots of walking! Walking up and down the hospital hill at 11pm got my labour going! Grin.

My induction was a nice one. They're not all horrific. Good luck and so nearly there!

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 01/04/2021 22:31

Forgot to add DS was born at 38+3 early evening. I had GD so had to stay in to check his sugar levels. Went home by 11am the next morning! Grin.

Dyra · 02/04/2021 00:29

Yup. Know that feeling. You know baby has to come at some point, but to be told that baby will definitely be here early and in a mere week?.... internally screaming

I found out I had pre-eclampsia at 36+1. Admitted there and then. They wanted to induce the very next day, but since baby and I were both healthy and I really didn't want my baby to be born in late August, it was agreed to hold off until 37 weeks.

I had gel pessaries to start with. Didn't do much, but they did get my cervix just open enough to allow for my waters to be broken (ARM). They should do this before they put the drip up. As the ARM didn't start labour within 2 hours, started on the drip.

Intense... Is a word for the contractions. It's certainly not a pleasant experience. I think I was quite lucky in that it took a really high dose to get labour started. As it starts with a minimal dose and can only be increased every 30 minutes, I think I had a more usual ramping up to strong contractions, rather than the 0-100 you hear about. I consider myself to have quite a high pain tolerance, but I needed something stronger once I got to active labour. I considered having an epidural, but opted to try diamorphine instead (cannot recommend enough).

In the end baby was born at 37+1. No interventions. Minor second degree tearing and the placenta took quite some time to come out. I know there were a few hairy moments in labour where they were concerned one or the other of us, but everything resolved in the end. I was off my tits on diamorphine, so I remember very little of it all. Grin

I was kept in for 2 nights post delivery, purely due to the pre-eclampsia diagnosis.

Good luck with it all @noraluv. You're going to do great. Pack (and eat!) all the snacks, stay hydrated, bring your own pillow, and be very open minded in regards to pain relief.
