Baby Clothes - how do I wash them?

Hi MN

Don't mean to be stupid. I have very bad eczema. Which I have had since childhood. I have it very well controlled with Diet and other factors that I have learnt over the years to avoid. So here is the problem.

I can only use ONE type of Washing powder. I can not touch / tollerate anything washed in any other powerder. I will litterally be running in sores with a couple of hours.

So Given that I know you are Supposed to wash your babies colthes in NO BIO. Can I just use my normal washing powerder. As if I don't I wont be able to touch the clothes

Help

WHen dd was a baby I used to wash all her clothes in non-bio. I then switched to bio and it didn't affect her at all. Ds' clothes have always been washed in bio and he's fine too.

So basically I would just go for your usual powder and see what happens. Which one is it btw?

StaryNightSky · 08/11/2007 12:23

Ariel.

It really is a pain in the butt as if I stay in hotel or anything and they a different powder I have to sleep in long sleves, toursers, socks, cotoon gloves! Very Sexy!!

Even then I often have problems in the morning.

Thanks

Do I use fabric softener? I know that is really stupid question, but everything has fallen out of my brain today!

You poor thing.

I've always used fabric conditioner but then I live in a hard water area. Do you use it at the moment?

Anna8888 · 08/11/2007 12:30

StaryNightSky - I've always used Ariel for all the family.

However, my daughter got dry skin and I swapped to Le Chat pure soap flakes for her for a while. Le Chat should not irritate your eczema, quite the contrary.

StaryNightSky · 08/11/2007 12:32

Fabric softener is ok as long as it is lenor and the blue one! Don't ask!

I've tried Le Chat befor they are pretty good but don't get things as clean as I like.

I'll just have to hope the LO takes after me and is not allergic to lenor / ariel. Otherwise familey lifecould become quiet entertaining!

Thanks

can you not tolerate the ariel non-bio?

but agree that the bio should be OK for your LO. DDs stuff is generally washed in fairy, but the odd bit gets done with our wash and her skin is fine.

StaryNightSky · 08/11/2007 12:35

No Tried it!

The whole No BIo thing is a big nightmare.

Went through 6 months of hell for non -bio! Won't being going there again!

Just a thought, have you tried these eco balls which means you don't use any washing powder at all?

StaryNightSky · 08/11/2007 12:38

NO haven't tried eco balls. May keep that as a solution is the LO struggles with ariel.

The really funny thing is I love the smell of washing !

StaryNightSky - I agree, Le Chat doesn't work as well as Ariel - but Ariel is the best washing detergent there is .

StaryNightSky · 08/11/2007 12:42

LOL Anna888. I don't know maybe I'm old fashioned! I just like washing to come out really clean

Maybe I am a really sh*t woman and don't do the washing often enough to be able to use something so gentle

NO that can't be it.!

You don't need fabric softener, just use white vinegar. That should be OK for LO's skin, no dodgy ingredients to set it off. Works a treat too, plus it descales the washing machine.

Anna8888 · 08/11/2007 12:46

OOh shall we have a best cleaning products thread? I, very, very ly, can get far too excited about cleaning products...

No, better not get started

DynamiteDaisy · 08/11/2007 12:51

another alternative might be soap nuts.

I think flame sells them at Bumfluff Nappies

systemsaddict · 08/11/2007 12:53

My ds has eczema and can only tolerate things washed in Surcare, special dermatologically friendly unscented stuff www.surcare.co.uk/, and all our clothes need to be washed in it too otherwise we couldn't even pick him up when he was little without him coming up in a rash - he's a bit less sensitive now thank goodness. Fairy non-bio brought him out in open sores. If the Ariel is a problem for your little one you could try Surcare and see how you go with it? It might not make you react. I don't find it washes quite as well as conventional washing powders but would rather have stuff slightly stained than have a bleeding child!

DaisyMoo · 08/11/2007 13:04

I looked into the non-bio/bio thing a while ago and could find no evidence that bio is any worse for the skin than non-bio. According to research done by Persil (who do make non-bio too, so not necessarily biased) non-bio seems to cause more problems with sensitivity than bio.

I used cloth nappies for my kids and dd got absolutely horrendous bleeding, blistering nappy rash that disappeared overnight when I switched from non-bio to bio.

Given how much you will have on your plate with a newborn I would personally just stick to the washing regime you know works for you unless it causes probs for the baby, which it probably won't

StaryNightSky · 08/11/2007 13:09

System

I totally agree having been there and suffered my self I would be more than happy to have have a shild in clothes that are dirty is the child was not suffering!

Its a terrible thing and must be almost as bad to have to look at your child suffering with it and nor being able to help quickly enough!

Pleased your LO has settled down a bit, quik recommendation for one they are slightly older Omega 3 suppliments or now in a lot of foods realle helped my skin and the gerneral condition of it. Break outs are a lot less common.

DaisyMoo

Thanks.

I've always wondered what the fasination with non- bio / bio products was. Sure I will now get shot down in flame!

It is such a strange thing, you would think that all washing powders have the same composition but it can make a huge difference.

OP posts:
mamijacacalys · 08/11/2007 15:17

Have always used Persil Bio (powder or tablets) and Lenor (all types) since mine were newborns and neither DS or DD have had any probs.
Am fussy about the washing being clean at 40degrees and non-bio just doesn't perform, so agree with StaryNightSky!
