Extreme swelling of feet/ankles

My feet and ankles are like balloons. HUGE. It’s so tight and uncomfortable and rather painful at times. I’m struggling to walk, I can’t get shoes on.

What can I do to lessen the swelling? I have two young children so sitting with feet up isn’t much of an option.

Just to add I’m 34 weeks, will I likely be like this until delivery? (Mw checked my urine/BP last week and confirmed all was fine)

As long as your BP ect is fine, the only thing you can do is keep them raised as often as possible

As pp said, keep them elevated if you can. I had this really badly in my first pregnancy, it was horrible! Sleep with your feet up on a pillow? I realise this is awkward on your side but I managed to find some positions it worked in. I was told to drink lots of water, because dehydration can add to the water retention. It feels a bit upside down to drink water to get rid of water but apparently helps. Saying that, I’m not sure it made much difference for me though. It did go away almost immediately after birth though.

Elevate them above heart height as often as you can, will mostly be after the kids are in bed.
I totally sympathise, I had right elephant feet in the last trimester of my twin pregnancy. Like you I couldn't rest much as I had 3 kids and a husband with a broken leg (he did that at 26wk, cast off day after elcs). The swelling went pretty quick after birth though so keep looking forward to that.

I’d call triage and run it by them if I were you. I had the same in my twin pregnancy, my last urine test was fine, but then the swelling came on. It was so bad my legs actually sprung leaks! I called on the off chance just to check it was normal, they called me in and I had severe pe - 2 days later my babies were born.

Could just be tiredness/normal pregnancy issues, but mine came on really suddenly.

Good luck!

Echoing the poster above. Pre-eclampsia can come in very suddenly. You are best to rule it out. I was entirely symptomless.

Check for pitted oedema

Queenbee95 · 21/03/2021 19:39

They’ve been swollen for well over a week now, midwife did say all was well with BP and urine sample.

It’s gotten a million times worse though. I have been sleeping with them elevated on pillows, but even then it’s not helping much.
I have also noticed it does pit.. so today I had one foot resting on the other for 5/10 minutes and when moved there was the indent of my foot there for a good while?

Not to alarm you, but I was swollen about a week before I called triage. I used to sit in bar stools at my kitchen counter (despite being heavily pregnant) with no issue, but about a week before I had imprints of the arms left on legs. The swelling went down for a couple of days then came back and that’s when I called. I was way too knackered to figure out where my leaky legs were coming from

I’d not heard of pitted oedama before, but having googled it I’d still say call triage!
