Bodysuits?

I am due soon and have bought a few short and long sleeved bodysuits to go under onesie/sleepsuits, and was planning to get a few more. Then I just read something saying that babies mostly just wear the all in ones with nothing underneath or maybe just a vest, unless v cold weather?! That’s not quite right is it? Or is it?

The general rule of thumb I used with my now toddler was one more layer than what I was wearing so that typically worked out as a vest (long or short sleeved depending on the season), a sleep suit and a cardigan. Obviously also depends on the weather where you live. X

Confusing but a bodysuit is also called a vest. I would say a short sleeve or sleeveless bodysuit with a sleepsuit over is pretty standard with the appropriate sleeping bag for the weather.

I don’t think I ever used a sleepsuit alone because the poppers from the bodysuit keep the nappy in place better. In hotter weather a long or short sleeve bodysuit would be enough with a light sleeping bag.

As PPs have said.. The general rule is that baby wears 1 more layer than you.
I've always put a vest or whatever they're actually called under the sleepsuit/baby grow.
Always have done. And that's what I've always seen others do too.

Unless it is very hot babies will mostly be wearing a long sleeve or short sleeve vest under a baby grow in the UK.

A vest is a bodysuit. So yes a short sleeve bodysuit under a sleep suit.

A body suit is usually called a vest.
Unless it's winter then the baby wouldn't need a long sleeved one under a sleep suit - also a faff to put on as the sleeves bundle up and are fiddly to straighten out.

shouldistop · 21/03/2021 08:25

Babies usually need a cardigan too (not under a sleeping bag though) unless your house is warm.

I have heard the 1 layer extra rule many many times. However, our DD has ALWAYS run hot. Nothing wrong with her at all... but generally, to keep her happy, we always have to remember to give her slightly lighter clothing than whatever it is we're wearing.
Just adding this because it really all depends on your babe!

I always put a vest/bodysuit under everything as I think it's nicer for them, means they don't have cold poppers against their skin as the only poppers on the vest are under their nappy. Also keeps their tummy/back warm once they're in top + bottoms if the top rides up. Because the vest is underwear, I tend to find short sleeved are the most comfortable and practical. I would use a long-sleeved one under a pinafore dress or dungarees. You can also use a long-sleeved vest just by itself as pyjamas in a sleeping bag.

However American friends/American pregnancy forums always seem to have the sleepsuit directly on the baby's skin! Maybe it's a different climate thing? Where are you reading this - it might be regional.

Thank you so much everyone, that actually makes it a lot clearer. I am not sure what the site was, it could have been a US one!

Yes, a bodysuit is a vest.

I've never used a sleepsuit straight on a baby's skin over the nappy. Standard baby attire for indoor temperatures of say 18-23C was a short sleeved vest/bodysuit under a sleepsuit. In warmer weather, they would just wear the vest. Long sleeved vests were mostly for when the baby was older and they would wear trousers over the vest.
