I don't know if anyone else feels the same as me but I get super anxious when it comes to food! I worry about all the risks with eating veg etc, today I ate a can of Heinz cream of tomato soup and worried about the milk/cream if it was pasteurised or unpasteurised and the other day I ate a Tesco cheese and tomato pre packaged pasta (sandwich counter - meal deal) and now I'm worrying about that! Anyone help calm my nerves? GrinConfused

It wouldn't matter if the soup was unpasteurised (it is cooked in the can) as you heated it anyway.

It would be very unlikely for a sandwich to use unpasteurised ingredients.

Look on the nhs website for what to avoid in pregnancy

The only thing I did not eat was the soft
Ice cream from a certain chain or the vans that came around, blue cheese and seafood (which I don't eat anyway). It's just a precaution. Food out of a can will be pasteurised and the pasta salad fine also.

Thank you! I've been eating the pasta from Tesco loads especially during my first trimester and now I'm 15weeks and 5 days I've randomly started worrying about it!

Thank you for your replySmile

Cooked seafood is fine
Blue cheese is ok if cooked
McFlurries are also OK as the machines have regular cleaning cycles. Maybe wouldn't have soft scoop from an ice cream van though

Ahhh bless you, this sounds stressful! But I think you know it’s a bit over the top...damn pregnancy hormones!

Even if you ate something unpasteurised it doesn’t mean you will get sick. These food may contain bacteria such as Campylobacter, E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella but these don’t most of the time. There is an increase risk and sometimes there is an outbreak but it normally makes the news / products are recalled.

With anything unpasteurised heat it enough to kill any bacteria off so you can have Camembert as long as it’s heated in the oven first and fully cooked. If you heated your soup and made sure it’s piping hot then it’s very minimal risk.

Are you quite prone to food poisoning?

If you really struggling I would maybe reach out to your HV / midwife and ask if there is any support for anxiety.

DuggeeHugPlease · 20/03/2021 15:43

No I don't worry at all but I've never had food poisoning in my life and rationalise that the risk is very tiny. I still eat cured meats and sushi etc. I don't like pate and soft cheeses so that's not an issue.

dementedpixie · 20/03/2021 15:46

Sushi is ok if the fish was frozen beforehand
Cured meats can be frozen for a few days or cooked to make it safer

Very stressful! Haha but it's a new thing I've randomly started to worry about! When all I want to do is enjoy it! Grin I've had food poisoning in the past but not something I would say I'm prone to, I'm just being stressy and over the top because it's my first I'm just worried about everything Smile

Must be tough once you start to worry about it but just try to remember the risks are small and check the NHS website as the actual list of foods to worry about it is quite small - and even if you eat them it doesn't automatically mean you'll be ill, just that there's a higher chance.

Thank you for replying! I checked the NHS list about pre packaged sandwiches and pasta etc and there isn't anything so from that I'm guessing it's fine! Otherwise it would clearly say do not eat! Thank you so much Smile
