I had absolutely no idea I wasn't supposed to eat salami or pepperoni and its all I've managed to eat. now I've got diarrhoea, and im having panic attacks because I'm scared of it damaging my baby. I had absolutely no idea I couldn't have it.

It's OK if cooked or if frozen for a few days before eating

vixey · 19/03/2021 20:49

it wasn't, it was a ready to eat packet from aldi.

It could be the spices causing diarrhoea rather than something more sinister. Now you know you can avoid them unless cooked or frozen first

so do you think it'll be OK?

I'm 32w and only just found out I shouldn't eat salami from your thread.. eat it often! Hope it's just a coincidence for you

LH1987 · 19/03/2021 23:44

Itll be fine, you're not supposed to eat it because of a small chance of listeria. It's highly unlikely. As pp said its probably the spice upsetting your tummy.

Obviously dont do it again but you are almost certainly fine.

The NHS have a fairly comprehensive page on what you shouldn't eat. I found it very useful.

LuckyFlash · 19/03/2021 23:45

I’m 37 weeks and have eaten plenty of salami from the packet... no issues

icegarden · 19/03/2021 23:47

Most of us eat plenty of things before we realise. Same as pate, but if you lived elsewhere it wouldn't be on the list

Lou98 · 19/03/2021 23:50

Diarrhoea can be an early pregnancy symptom anyway, I was going between diarrhoea and constipation for the first few months of my pregnancy.

As above it is recommended not to eat due to possible listeria but it is very unlikely. A lot of people don't even realise they are pregnant at 6 weeks so carry on as normal, and as PPs have said, not everyone realises so plenty eat it throughout their pregnancy. Now you know you can avoid it but honestly don't worry about it

Chelyanne · 19/03/2021 23:53

It could be hormones causing the diarrhea.
Deli meats packaged at the supermarkets have a very low risk of infection, they are best consumed cooked during pregnancy just in case though.

StarFriend · 19/03/2021 23:58

Also, to add to the above, even if you were ridiculously unlucky to contract listeria from the salami, at six weeks your embryo isn't connected to you properly yet - the placenta hasn't taken over at six weeks. And, even if it was and you did have listeria it wouldn't automatically lead to a miscarriage.

dementedpixie · 20/03/2021 00:00

It's toxoplasmosis that's the risk from cured meats but it's a very small risk.

drkpl · 20/03/2021 00:01

Please don’t worry, op. Salami won’t cause any harm to any harm to an unborn baby. They only caution against it as pregnant women could get ill from toxoplasmosis which can be linked to higher rates of miscarriage (although you are extremely unlikely to get ill from cured meats). Salami is not even listed as a food to avoid on the NHS website- just to be careful with. Toxoplasmosis is extremely rare from Salami for anyone, including pregnant women.
