Midwife Appointments

Hello everyone,
So, I just found out that I am pregnant and have my first midwife appointment next week. This will be my first baby. The thing is I am generally a very anxious person so all the unknowns coming into this pregnancy is making me extra anxious. I just don't like not knowing what to expect. I’ve tried to do some research regarding appointments and stuff but I’m not sure if what I’m reading or watching is true or not. I just want an idea of what to expect over the coming 9 months around appointments. I did find a video on YouTube that I thought was quite detailed but again I’m not sure how accurate the information is as it doesn’t have many views. ()

Can someone tell me if the info on the video is accurate or give me an idea of what I might expect over the next 9 months when it comes to scans and appointments.

Thank you.

Congratulations! I haven’t watched the video, but this is the NHS schedule of appointments

How many weeks are you? Typically, I’ve had midwife appointments around eight weeks (then often bloods taken at 10 weeks) before a dating scan at 12 weeks (with bloods taken again if the previous ones were too early). At the booking in appointment (eight week one) I’ve been given lots of information in a booklet (but you might have an app) that will tell you about your appointments. Typically, first low risk pregnancies have more appointments and some will be with the GP rather than the midwife. I think the first GP one is around 25 weeks and the next midwife appointment, at 28 weeks, involves another blood test.

Usually you will have another scan at 20 weeks and sometimes around 36 weeks. If you are anxious, there should be some form of antenatal MH support so ask your midwife about it.

Congrats OP. I used the schedule linked above already when I was pregnant and found it very helpful.

I am 7 weeks according to my app. Okay I will definitely ask my midwife about support when I see her. I just struggle sometimes to ask for help when it is face to face (Silly and annoying I know).

I have watched the video and it is the schedule for straightforward first pregnancies (not twins or ones with significant medical complications).
In my last pregnancy they did the dating scan at booking (at about 13 weeks) so that was handy to get both done.
Some areas don’t tell you the sex of the baby.
I’m not sure if COVID has changed anything.

Oh okay thank you, so my appointment schedule may be different if i'm not a straight forward pregnancy or there is more than one in there.

Oh really how weird. We really want to know the sex so I could have to go private for that then.

I moved house a lot and had 4 children in 4 hospitals. I could have found out sex in some but not all of those areas, so you might have to find a private scan. A question for you to bring to your booking appointment!

Good luck with it all. One step at a time! X

My booking in appt was done just before christmas and the majority of it was done on the phone because of covid, i then see the midwife to get my urine checked, blood pressure, weight and bloods and thats when i got given my blue folder (its different in other trusts but im in scotland) then had my 12 week scan and other bloods for the downs screening ect, then had my 16 week appointment for whooping cough and flu vaccine, got my 20 week anomoly scan and found out babys sex (again will vary on trusts if the tell you that info) and iv had my 22 week appointment where they measured my uterus and let me hear babys heartbeat, my next appointment is tues for my glucose test at 24 weeks and then i see the midwife at 28 weeks and then every 4 weeks from then, im a low risk pregnancy but this is my first
