Breast Lump

Hi I'm looking for some reassurance as I have serious anxiety! And wonder has anyone else gone through the same thing and all be ok?

I am 9 weeks pregnant and found a small lump in the fatty bit below my boob when I was doing a self check 3 weeks ago. I was in so much shock. It's small, can move between my fingers and isn't painful. I have contacted my GP who said it feels like a Fibroadenoma but I still can't help but worry.

I have an appointment at the breast clinic next week.

But has anyone else had this happen especially in pregnancy and everything be ok
I am worried sick.

Hi 22 weeks here and have the same. Gp not concerned but referred me to the breast clinic to be sure. It's most likely nothing but best to be safe than sorry. Apparently lots of strange lumps and bumps can develop in pregnancy

Fawn68 · 18/03/2021 13:02

@Inthesky42 gosh the worry is just unreal! Like it's on my mind 24/7. Where is your lump at? When did you first notice yours?

oh thats good you have an appt at breast clinic for proper check up. I'm super paranoid as had loads of weird lumps and bumps and boobs feeling firmer etc. Spoke to midwife who didnt really reassure me - like @Inthesky42 says lots can appear in pregnancy and probably just related to that but really good you are getting checked out. I feel like id be in my gp every week at this rate - it's so hard to know what is normal when so many changes going on. got another midwife appt next week and going to bring it up now nearly 16 weeks as the soreness is starting to subside so thought they might be changing less rapidly week to week.
good luck with your appt!

Fawn68 · 18/03/2021 13:24

@leftitlate37 it's a definite proper lump though and doesn't feel like other tissue and it's not in my other breast. Are you just going to ask her in general about lumps and bumps or did you also find an actual lump too? Thank you! Be glad to get it all over with.

hi OP, sorry you're having this worry. I know exactly how you feel. I went to GP with a breast lump twice. Once was soon after DS2 was born, the other time was last year. In both cases there was a definite lump there, distunguishable from the other breast tissue. My GP was concerned enough to refer me on 2-week pathway. I spent 2 weeks as a bag of nerves, having lost my mum to breast cancer when she was just 52. First one, the consultant examined me and was not concerned at all, no follow-up needed. The lump went away after a couple of months.

Second time, the gave me a mammogram and ultrasound. Again, nothing to worry about. Went away on its own!
The key thing to remember is that the vast majority of lumps are nothing to worry about. Hormones and pregnancy changes probably cause all sorts! Chances are you are absolutely fine.

Fawn68 · 18/03/2021 13:36

@ScatteredMama82 thank you for some reassurance! And I'm very sorry about your mum too I'm sure it must have been so worrying for you. I really am hoping that this is hormone related or something! I just was never able to find much info or anyone else who developed lumps in pregnancy so it's good to hear from people who have and all be ok.

@Fawn68 only a few days ago but I don't check that regularly. My boob was hurting which is why I checked. Its a small pea sized lump above my right nipple in the fatty bit. I've done my best to reassure myself it's not cancer and if it is something can be done about it pretty quickly (I've spent a lot of time working on my anxiety as in my first pregnancy it was through the roof!) so I'm just waiting for the breast clinic to confirm it's nothing rather than thinking about the worst. Hope everything is OK with you and its just a random cyst or something x

@Fawn68 I had a firboadenoma during puberty (14/15); I was told that it is most common when you're tissue is growing rapidly like puberty and I guess possibly pregnancy when your boobs grow. Mine did at about weeks 5 and 6!

My experience was;

  • I found a lump in my right breast (mine was a ball about the size of a 50p)
  • went to the drs, who suspected a fibroadenoma
  • was sent for a biopsy which was a tiny bit painful because they inserted a needle into the lump to take tissue, but not that bad really
  • it was confirmed to be a firbroadenoma so they scheduled me for an op
  • had the op, all good but I have 1 boob bigger than the other due to the size of the lump and my age at the time and it may impact breastfeeding as mine was in the actual breast.

Like I say, I was young and not pregnant so what exactly will happen for you I'm not sure; whether they operate at all, when, etc. but that was my experience.
Very worrying and scary at the time because my nan had died of breast cancer the year before and you think lump = cancer but it doesn't necessarily, and the breast clinic will be super helpful and supportive.

I know it's hard not to worry but you're being seen quickly so just try to focus on you, keep your mind occupied and keep talking.
I know my experience isn't exactly the same but if you have any Qs just ask.

Good luck for next week and I'm sending you a virtual hand hold and positive thoughts x

@Inthesky42 Yea I know what you mean! I wish I had your mind but unfortunately I don't Sad I have been referred though also to a professional to help with my health anxiety so hopefully that will get me on the right road Smile

@ILoveBountys thanks for your story! Yes I on the day it will be ultrasound and probably biopsy, no surgery at this stage of pregnancy though. My lump is quite small and moves a lot when trying to touch it, and is at the Bottom fatty part of my boob at 6 o clock and I think that's why the Gp thought Fibroadenoma. I will just be glad to get this appointment over with and hope everything is ok as it's really put a dark cloud over my pregnancy! I have 1 child who is almost 2 and 2 miscarriages at the end of the year so been a tough time.

Pre pregnancy I had a Fibroadenoma. Removed via surgery due to pain.

I've had 2-3 lumps in pregnancy. 1 was another Fibroadenoma. One a blocked duct. I also had swollen lymph glands in my armpit (discovered by the doctor when he was feeling the lump, not me). I've had a variety of different biopsies done to said lumps.

Boobs change a lot of pregnancy. Great blood flow means things get bigger and are found more easily.

ILoveBountys · 18/03/2021 15:32

@Fawn68 Yes definitely; there's enough to worry about I pregnancy without this and after the experiences you've had it must feel really difficult. I'm so sorry to hear about your losses Flowers

I also remembered that when were late 20s my friend found a moveable lump under her breast and she went to the drs and it was because she was quite thin and the drs said that sometimes skinny people with smaller breasts can feel lumps and bumps more easily as there's not much fat on them - not a problem I have! - but she went for a biopsy and it was confirmed as fine (I can't remember what it now was though) small enough not to be removed, didn't grow and she still has it - so there's another story about a lump that was found, tested and fine.

I hope everything is OK and you can start to enjoy this pregnancy and being a mum without this - you deserve it xx

Fawn68 · 19/03/2021 07:34

@OneForTheJourney thank you! They seem quite common in pregnancy then hopefully mines is nothing to worry about!

OP posts:
Fawn68 · 19/03/2021 07:35

@ILoveBountys I am very thin with very small boobs! I only seemed to notice it when I was 6 weeks, not sure if it was always there but smaller though. Thank you for your kind words x
