I suffered really badly with HG and was prescribed cyclizine and omeprozole from about 8 weeks, im now 24 and at my 22 week midwife appt she basically told me to stop taking them, iv managed a week without them but last night ended up being sick and then this morning i just feel terrible again, she told me if the sickness was to start then "by all means take them" do you think id be able to just start them again or see how i go? I dont want to do anything thats going to harm the baby

I took cyclizine and ondansetron all the way up until the day I gave birth and during labour, I still gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Speak with your GP and ask for clarification. My sickness improved between 6 and 8 months and I was able to space out medication more but then it when downhill again. X

@Marshy86 Thankyou i will perhaps give my gp a call, she did say if the sickness started again then by all means take them but i just didnt want to without proper clarification that it was safe in the later stages of pregnancy

I’ve seen something recently about prochlorperazine (stemetil) not being great during third trimester / close to birth as it passes through to the baby. It’s fine when they are in the womb but you don’t really want it in their system once they are out.
Ondansetron, on the other hand, is fine later on in pregnancy but there is some research that has found a potential link between ondansetron and cleft palates and heart defects. Therefore, it’s advised that you only take ondansetron after 10 weeks once all the major organs are roughly developed. It’s a very small chance of defects and I chose to take ondansetron in this pregnancy from 8.5 weeks.
If you are still medicated this late in pregnancy I’d probably want to talk to a consultant if there is a suggestion that you shouldn’t be taking certain medications.
For what it’s worth I was taking ondansetron up until birth with number one and when I still felt sick after the birth they gave me ondansetron IV.

Oh and cyclizine I think is fine whenever - I pop them like skittles! (Well, only up to three tablets a day but I don’t think there are any associated risks to the baby by taking them)

Ondansetron by IV is amazing !!! Honestly I feel your pain, but if your still being sick in labour I highly recommend asking for this. My little one was a whopping 9lb 13 oz so definitely no problems with his growth 😂

What is on Ondansetron? I just dont know why she would ask me to stop taking them, she did ask if i was still being sick, to which i replied no becausr im on cyclizine 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's another anti sickness tablet- I used to be on 2 of these and 3 cyclizine a day but worked wonders for me although was gutted that all the weigh I lost I ended up putting back on again when I could finally eat. Watch out for the heartburn also I went through a stage thinking my sickness had got really bad at nighttime again and turned out I needed gaviscon - ended up using the mint tablets and keeping them under my pillow at night.

xoxochellexoxo · 18/03/2021 20:14

@Marshy86 yeah i was wondering if that was maybe what was wrong last night with me being sick and perhaps i just needed another omeprozole, im going to ring the gp in the morning just to get advice on taking the tablets again

I'm surprised she told you to stop taking them
I've suffered dreadful with HG this pregnancy and last, was last admitted to hospital at 22 weeks due to sickness
Every doctor and my midwife has always been on the stance of Keep taking your tablets
I'm on cyclizine and ondansetron although coping at the moment with just one cyclizine a day and 'normal' sickness when I travel in a car as passenger etc Grin

Marshy86 · 18/03/2021 20:47

Sounds like a plan hun, don't suffer in silence! It's so lovely once they're here and the sickness just disappears! I completely feel for you, it's not pleasant at the best of times but suffering from HG is a million times worst especially when ignorant people make comments of it's only morning sickness it will end in a few weeks ! I had to copy information about it to my HR as they had obviously not bothered to look into what it was

@99redspottedducks i think in comparison with alot of mums to be my HG was mild, i was only in hospital once with it, iv seen a different midwife at each appointment as the one i originally had went on mat leave, she obv hadnt read my notes as she wasnt even aware i was on cyclizine until i told her, i just feel like her telling me to stop taking them just because im not being sick but i mean thats there job to stop me being sick, im going to phone the gp in the morning as it was the hospital who put me on the cyclizine and i had managed to cut them down but still felt i needed them in the mornings

@Marshy86 it really is! I had to end up being furloughed from work in jan because i work in retail and was really struggling to wear a mask so my hoss took the decision that id be safer at home which im thankful for because about 8 collegues have since had covid

I agree if you she wants you to wait until you're being sick again it's too late really for them to have an effect
Hope you get some sensible advice from your gp Smile

That's so good to hear! Unfortunately I'm taking my employer through tribunal they have been vile from start to finish. They don't like that I'm prioritising my childcare needs over work, why can't I stay late when the nursery closes at 6 ? 😂
