Hello,
I an pregnant with twins, and everything was fine until I had my u/s last week (25+4 days) and they found out that my cervix had shorten to 2.8 cm and that I have funneling (1.19cm width and .46 cm length)

I was asked to do modified bed rest and progesterone suppositories.

today (26+4 days), i repeated the scan and my cervix shorten further to 2.0, and they mentioned in the report "funneling of internal cervical re-noted. however, there is an interval opening and closing of the funneled part which measures from 2.4 to 1.2 cm wide. otherwise the remaining closed part"

Can someone explain what does this mean ? I am really freaking out and won't see my doctor again in 2 weeks.

Sorry op how scary. So from what I understand it means that the top part of ur cervix ( the bit next to the baby's) is open the bottom part of the cervix is still closed, it kind of looks like a v on the ultrasound.
It's normally from incompetent cervix where the pressure and weight from baby's makes a weak/ short cervix open, this maybe different with a twin pregnancy thou, as I only have a singleton. The hope with bed rest is to take pressure of the cervix and progesterone to help 'strengthen' the cervix.

I have a short cervix so had a cervical stitch placed early in pregnancy. I went down to 2cm at 28 weeks with funnelling so the stitch is stopping the cervix opening more x
Hopefully someone with twins will be along to help, if not try a fb group called incompetent cervix uk

@boymum88 congratulations! I am relieved now. Thank you for replying. Did you have any pains or discharge after funneling?

So I had twins 5 months ago, I had regular cervical scans (due to a previous late loss) and there is score they use to calculate your chances of pre term labour. I think it’s called the quipp score, you can google.

Some trusts do not like to do a cervical stitch in a twin pregnancy, it was something I queried with my own trust and was told that whilst belief of the stitch being used in a twin pregnancy were mixed that they would agree to one if I felt I needed it. I was lucky and fortunately for me despite shortening it was never needed.

In terms of more detailed advice and answers I would very much advise joining incompetent cervix uk on Facebook. It’s a really helpful group, though I will mention just in case it’s a trigger their are ladies on there who talk about and experience loss.

There are also various types of cerclage/stitches, a TAC (a high abdominal stitch) which is placed before pregnancy, a Macdonald stitch which I think can be used as a rescue stitch. There is also a Doctors can also advise against a stitch in certain cases, I think this can relate to the risk of infection or accidentally rupturing membranes. The safest course of action is often deemed to be the use of progesterone suppositories and in some cases bed rest too. There are cases where progesterone alone is enough, and the cervix can even lengthen in pregnancy too. I would imagine they are taking this course of action, will monitor you and see how your cervix responds. Please don’t just take my word for this, I highly recommend talking to your consultant and of course doing you own research.

I am sorry that you weren’t given more information at your scan, but hopefully with the help of the incompetent cervix uk group you gain some more in depth knowledge and advocate for yourself feeling more informed.

From one twin mama to another I’m wishing you all the very best on the journey ahead.
