Cervix measuring at 2.9cm 20 weeks - should I be worried?

I’m 20+1 and just had my 20 week scan plus internal to check cervix length. Everything looks perfect with baby so that’s great. Cervix was 2.9cm though, which is a lot shorter than at 18 weeks when it was 3.5cm! I’m waiting to see the midwife now (not sure why as last time I saw consultant about it). Will wait to see what they say, but am quietly panicking as surely that’s a big reduction in length in two weeks?!

@MintGreenLife amazing news. Good luck tomorrow but it sounds like things have settled and you're on track. I'm still on the progesterone and taking it very easy. 25 weeks today Shock kicks are getting harder. Update us on your scan if you feel like it :)

@Bigbellies just had my scan. Was 31mm so seems to be staying put at that length ☺️ I’ll be carrying on with progesterone and am going to have another final check at 25 weeks, but otherwise consultant is happy. Lovely you are getting lots of strong kicks 💕 mine seems to be a wriggler and is kicking lots more in recent days which is lovely and so reassuring xx

@MintGreenLife sorry for not replying sooner I just thought I would come on here and saw I had notifications. That's fantastic news, what a relief. I am not having any more measurements taken, trying to minimise trips out plus the consultant said he doesn't want to risk introducing anything inside. I'm 26+4 today!! How are you doing now?

MintGreenLife · 08/04/2021 20:53

@Bigbellies no worries ☺️ I’m feeling much better about everything now, and feel like I’ll be able to completely put the worry behind me after my next check at 25 weeks. I’m 23+4 now 🥰 how are you feeling in general? When you say the consultant doesn’t want to introduce anything inside, do you mean having internal scans? I do wonder if I even need another scan at 25 weeks as consultant was happy to sign me off, but think he could tell I was a bit apprehensive as agreed to do one final scan x

Hi All,

I hope everyone is doing well?

I am new to this thread and saw your messages and I really wanted to ask if either of you had a scan prior to 20 weeks to check your cervix and what the measurement was then?

I was scanned at 16 weeks and 3 days and my cervix measured 29mm (2.9cm). I was told that was fine and that they would re check it at 22 weeks.

I’m currently 19 weeks and 1 day and will be having my 20 week scan next week.

I am just wondering if I could ask them to check my cervix size at this scan?
Should I be concerned being left 6 weeks if my cervix was already at 2.9cm at 16 weeks?

In addition, did any of you who suffered with shortening of the cervix have any pains etc? I’ve been getting quite a few intense stabbing pains/shooting pains that stop you in your tracks. When I’ve looked this up it sounds like ‘lightening crotch’ but I’ve had this since 17 weeks so wasn’t sure if it’s normal to experience this so early on?

@BambinoOnTheWay it's always worth asking but abdominal scans are not as accurate as transvaginal scans. What I would say if your worried give ur hospital a call and ask them to scan you earlier, they maybe able to order a tv scan and have that done alongside ur 20 week scan.
Do you have any risk factors for incompetent cervix ?
I was scanned at 10 weeks and was 2.6cm so was fitted with a stitch just before 14 weeks ( pervious 28 weeker)
Most lady's don't have any symptoms of the cervix shorting/funnelling. Some will have pressure / Spotting. I had slight spotting but once I got to the hospital I was already 5cm dilated with the sac protruding, he was born a few hrs later
