Does this baby name sound awful?!

We are due baby number 3 in June and really domt know what name to pick! We don't know the sex but are thinking maybe William for a boy. Only issue is our surname is Whelan, does William Whelan sound silly?? Our other sons names are Edward and Harry so we want something f traditional to go with them! Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'd probably raise an eyebrow more at Harry and William than the surname but don't think the alliteration is an issue.

thecognoscenti · 14/03/2021 20:02

It's a bit of a mouthful and VERY royal! I love the name William but might avoid in your case. How about Alexander?

Mamamamasaurus · 14/03/2021 20:04

You say 'traditional', I say 'Royal' and OTT.

Whatdoesitsayaboutyou · 14/03/2021 20:05

I'm with pp.
William was on my short list, others that made it on there were Thomas, Jack, Alfred (Alfie), Oliver and James.

leggingsandwellies · 14/03/2021 20:07

William is a GORGEOUS name, but you really shouldn't go there if you already have a Harry...

tilder · 14/03/2021 20:07

William is a fab name. I agree it's a bit of a mouthful with your surname though.

Elderflower14 · 14/03/2021 20:09

Wilfred instead of William?

PotteringAlong · 14/03/2021 20:10

No. Too much.

Easterbunnygettingready · 14/03/2021 20:10

Willie Whelan isn't cool...
Go the whole hog and go George imo..

mrsnibblesisahero · 14/03/2021 20:13

How on earth is William 'OTT'?

Chunkymenrock · 14/03/2021 20:16

Lovely Irish surname! William sadly doesn't work though.

Mamamamasaurus · 14/03/2021 20:16

@mrsnibblesisahero

How on earth is William 'OTT'?
William isn't OTT - having a Harry and an Edward then adding William? That part is OTT IMO.
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/03/2021 20:18

James works well with your surname and 'fits' with your other sons' names..?

DartmoorChef · 14/03/2021 20:22

Billy whelan sounds perfectly OK

Nat4392 · 14/03/2021 20:25

Yes already having a Harry and an Edward is a little too royal.
I also cannot unhear Stewie Griffin saying “Whill Whelan”

MooreLew · 14/03/2021 20:25

I really like the name! I don't care for the royals and I wouldn't think twice about having Harry and William for my sons names if I liked them.

I don’t think you can have a name that starts with ‘Willy Wee’ (Willie (am) Whe (lan))

It’s not the alliteration, it’s the connotation. And the royals thing. I wouldn’t.

It’s not like it’s a choice between that or something jarring, there are hundreds of traditional boys names you might choose.

Arthur
Albert
Frederick
Alexander
Benjamin
Matthew
Rupert
Robert
Patrick
James
Nicholas
Christopher
Jonathon
Douglas
Paul
Thomas
Laurence

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/03/2021 20:30

I love William, especially with Henry. So they would be Will Henry.

I think it's just too much of a mouthful with your surname. How about Matthew, David, Isaac or Adam?

RosesAndHellebores · 14/03/2021 20:30

I knew a Bill Whelan once. James, Thomas, George, Alexander, Louis, Nicholas, Patrick, John, Arthur.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/03/2021 20:33

I don't think you can do Eddie and Freddie.

hitsvilleuk · 14/03/2021 20:39

Alexander or James would both be better with your surname

SplendidSuns1000 · 14/03/2021 20:40

James, Charlie/Charles, Theodore, Alexander, George, Arthur, Archie, Oliver, Benjamin, Sebastian, Samuel, Joseph.

Any W name will sound odd with Whelan I think. And it may be difficult for him to pronounce.

Greenmarmalade · 14/03/2021 20:41

Lovely!

Bluenightowl · 14/03/2021 20:43

William and Harry and Edward? It is way too much. Harry and Edward might not raise eyebrows but throw in William and it becomes a joke. I’d skip any other name associated with the royals.
