Hi ladies,

I have got an induction booked for tomorrow, I am 39+2 days and had a sweep yesterday where they said I was 1-2cm dilated and having mild cramps.

I just wanted to hear everyone’s stories on induction as this is my first baby so getting very nervous

Hello, I was induced at 38 weeks. I had 3 peserries and after nearly 72 hours I was finally 1cm so they could break my waters and put me on the drip, I was already exhausted after 3 days in hospital so had an epidural when the drip was put in. It's good you are already 1-2cm so I hope it will be quick for you! My waters were broken 5pm and baby born 1.30pm next day. I would just say don't go in like I did all excited and naive thinking my baby would be born that day 🤦‍♀️😂 Good Luck 🍀💐 x

Can I ask why they are inducing you?

Mummatobe12 · 14/03/2021 10:34

@TheFoz They are inducing me due too reduced baby movements, a slight dip on baby’s growth chart

@Janxyb oh gosh what a long process!!! I hope it doesn’t take me that long hahah!! I’m bouncing on my birthing ball today - hoping for it too naturally start!

You are likely going to be in for a long haul. Induction is painful, particularly when it’s your first so at the first sign of the pain getting too much, ask for pain relief. If you can keep active, use a birthing ball, walk the corridors, up and down the stairs, whatever you can do.

Bring plenty of healthy snacks, the likes of cereal/granola bars, dates, fruit. And of course chocolate.

I hope you won’t have too long to wait until you have your baby in your arms 🌺

I had the pessary in the morning and labour started a few hours later. Contractions came on very strong but baby was born naturally after 4 hours with no pain relief. Every experience is completely different so try not to worry yourself. Your body was literally made to do this. Good luck.

Guineapiggiesmalls · 14/03/2021 10:43

I had my first (and only) pessary at 4:30pm, waters broke at 11pm when my contractions also started. Baby arrived at 11 the next day. It can be a long process, but mine didn’t feel that way at all. I was dreading being induced, but would happily opt for it now. Good luck, wishing you an easy birth!

When I went onto the ward everyone else's inductions seemed to work really fast, I was the only one left in the 4 bed bay that evening, then others came and went in the morning and I was still there!!
So I don't think there's any set way of how it goes.
For me it was about 45 hours from peasant to baby.
All the best with it 😊😊😊

squirrelnutkins1 · 14/03/2021 10:46

Pessary not peasant 😂😂😂

20viona · 14/03/2021 10:47

I had 2 pessarys 6 hours apart which got me to 3cm with no pains. Then they broke my waters, I stood up and WOW absolutely agonising. She was born 2 hours later!

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 14/03/2021 10:55

I had a pessary in for 24 hours, contractions started after about 18 hours, really ramped up after the pessary came out and ds was born 3 hours later

Mummatobe12 · 14/03/2021 11:12

Thank you all so much for your messages!! I think everyone’s story is so different, I’m hoping my little one takes to the pessary and wants to come out quick to meet us🥰🥰

Hi @Mummatobe12, I was induced at 40+5 due to reduced movements. I was already 1cm dilated from my sweep. I was also worried it would take a long time as my leaflet had said it could take 2-3 days and when the midwife put the pessary in they said they would check it again in 24 hours if nothing had happened. I was having strong regular contractions 4/5 hours later. The midwives were reluctant to check as they have to remove the pessary to check but eventually did, so 15 hours from having it put in they checked and I was 5cm and took to delivery ward.
Not sure what counts as ‘quick’ etc but I was pleased with that looking back as I had expected to be waiting for days!

How exciting for you that you will be meeting your little one in the next couple of days! Grin

I was induced at 39 plus 5. I had a sweep two days before where she thought I was 1-2cm. At the hospital they thought 1 cm and gave me the pessary. When I was monitored they could see tightenings but I could feel them. 24 hours later I was at the magic 2cm where they could break my waters so no need for the gel.

But labour ward was full so we had to wait 6 hours for the next stage. Got to labour ward, she broke my waters with ease but the consultant was happy with babies movements (too much) and sent me straight to theatre.

Moral of the story - be prepared for a lot of hanging around.

welshladywhois40 · 14/03/2021 13:25

Sorry that should read I couldn't feel them!

Choclover89 · 14/03/2021 13:33

I was 40+5 already about 1cm. They put pessary in at 11pm and very mild contractions started the next morning. Started to get a bit more painful at about 8pm then suddenly ramped up at 10.30pm. They examined me at midnight and I was only 3cm but I had her around 2am.
For me it was a positive experience and I would happily be induced again!

I had a sweep the day before the pessary and I think I may have been 1cm dilated.
