Anxiety for 20 week scan

Hi everyone, I am 18 weeks pregnant and have my 20 week scan coming up, I have not yet felt baby move due to having an anterior placenta. I had a private scan 3 weeks ago and the heartbeat was strong and baby was fine, however I have started to worry the past few days that something may be wrong as I came across a post about a 20 week scan and the heartbeat was not found, there where no symptoms or signs to indicate anything was wrong prior to the scan, I am wondering what the chances are for something to have gone wrong? I don’t really feel pregnant either apart from a slight bump that doesn’t seem to be getting any bigger just yet, any advice would be very much appreciated, thank you so much in advance x

Big hugs and a handhold 💐🤗

Scanxiety is pretty normal, who wouldn’t be worried about something that feels so monumental and where bad news would be absolutely devastating x

Not feeling a first baby till after 20 weeks is super normal. I didn’t have an anterior placenta and felt one of my twins at 18+3 and the other from 19+2.

It might help you to visit a website called miscarriage odds reassurer ❤️
After 18 weeks you have a 99.7% chance of a continuing pregnancy xx

I cant really help as I am only 16 weeks. I think it is normal to have these anxious thoughts though, especially when you read stories from other people. I'm the exact same. If you have the budget it might be worthwhile booking a private scan in the next day or two to try and ease your concerns a bit. I have one tonight that is in between my 12 week and 20 week because I knew the wait would feel like forever.

Thanks so much ladies, I really needed to hear that! Flowers It’s nice to know I’m not alone in feeling like this, I have had a few (some would say maybe too much!) private scans in the past few weeks to put my mind at ease, I’m sure they are sick of seeing me! Grin

Got my 20 week scan on Monday morning so trying to stay as positive as I can and hopefully all is well, I have no real reason for concern other than I have read too many horror stories and I don’t have any bleeding or anything - thank goodness.

Thank you FlashesOfRage going to have a look now, wish I wasn’t such a worrier sometimes xx

I had a fundal placenta with my first, and started feeling tiny tiny bubbles about 19 weeks. I wasn't sure these were movements, so when they asked at the scan if I'd felt movements I said no, and they weren't at all surprised. It takes longer with a first baby, and even longer with an anterior placenta.

Of course, something could be wrong at the scan, this does happen. But it's far, far more likely that your baby is fine. As soon as they start you'll be able to see wiggling (unless it's asleep I guess!) so that puts your mind at rest straight away - your baby is alive and kicking. Then they go through every body part one by one.

I don't think that scans pick up anywhere near all abnormalities however, so just because your scan is fine doesn't mean your baby is definitely fine. Not trying to scare you, just make you aware that you've got another 20 weeks to go until your baby is born, and then 18 years until they're an adult. That's a lot of worrying! I know it's hard, but try to find a way of coping with it, whatever works best for you, or you'll be feeling like this for years :(

I’m currently 31 weeks pregnant and have anterior placenta. I didn’t feel any movement at all until around 24 weeks and even then I had to concentrate to feel it. Now it’s much more noticeable but I think it’s totally normal to have anxiety about baby movements. Please try not to get too worried Flowers

@JenMJM Any updates lovely?
I too am currently 17+4 I have my 20 week scan booked for 24th of this month. This is my 2nd baby and so far haven't felt any movements at all. I called the MW with my concerns and she said not too worry as it's still early days. I don't particularly have a bump either and have lost all of my pregnancy symptoms. Like you have been making myself sick with worry over missed miscarraige stories and am now completely freaking myself out. Hope your scan was a totally positive one 💖

JenMJM · 06/05/2021 16:19

I’m now 26+3 and everything is absolutely perfect Smile It’s totally normal for us to worry, especially when the symptoms disappear and can’t feel any kicks. Those early days do feel like a life time though, I completely understand what you mean! It’s easier said than done, but try not to worry ❤️ It won’t be long before baby is kicking you non stop, I didn’t start to feel anything until 22+ weeks due to my placenta and the movements have just been getting stronger. Good luck for you scan (not that you’ll need it) and try to focus on being excited to see your baba again ☺️ Xx
