Can a newborn go straight into a cot bed?

I know that he/she might not settle in it, or whatever, but for safety purposes is it ok? Thanks!

My DS1 did and DS2 did at nap times, bith are OK and usually sleep fine

goingfor3 · 06/11/2007 17:40

It will be fine aslong as you put the babies feet at the bottom of the cot.

Flier · 06/11/2007 17:40

i think for safety purposes, its ok, but as you say, for settling they may not feel too secure, unless they are swaddled, perhaps

Fine for safety, but yup, may not settle.

DD needed oodles of open space from day one and would have loved it.

DS I decided to forgo the moses basket and stick him in the top bit of the travel cot - he hated it! Ended up buying a crib which he stayed in until he tried to climb out

MrsBadger · 06/11/2007 17:48

at your bedroom being big enough to fit a cotbed next to the double...

imaginewittynamehere · 06/11/2007 17:56

Yep - DD did & was fine - swaddled for first 3 weeks & then blankets followed quickly by a grobag.

She slept in her pram in the daytime & never seemed to have a problem with the varying amount of space iyswim

NorthernLurker · 06/11/2007 18:03

Does the side drop or do you have long arms? If the answers to both of these are no then you may have trouble inserting a sleeping baby into the cot without dropping them on the mattress! Personally I have short arms so would stand no chance

imaginewittynamehere · 06/11/2007 19:17

Good point Northern Lurker - my cotbed had diff height settings - for the first 3 months I used it with 1 side off & next to our bed - like co-sleeping but not iyswim

Luckily for us one of height settings was exactly the same as our bed. I then had ould pillows in the small gap & a flat sheet sideways across cot & our bed & worked really well.

imaginewittyname - I'm thinkig of doing what you did but am having trouble finding out mattress heights (we have to order online). Do you think it would matter if the baby's matress was slightly lower than the parents' one?

Sorry for hijack....

Othersideofthechannel · 06/11/2007 19:32

We started off with a cot bed with a high mattress from the day our babies came home from hospital. They had sleeping bags.
No problems with newborns but when they started rolling around in their sleep we were woken a couple of times by babies with their feet or arms stuck between the rails!

whomovedmychocolate · 06/11/2007 19:35

Mine did. We coslept for a month because I was nervous and then DD was straight in the cotbed, swaddled, foot to bottom of bed. Oh and they don't know any different regarding mattress heights so don't worry. We started off very high - much higher than our bed and then moved lower (actually moved the cotbed too because she snores.

susiemj · 06/11/2007 19:42

LOL on snoring - thankyou!

NorthernLurker · 06/11/2007 19:45

it's amazing how much noise an asleep newborn makes - and as for the farting - don't get me started!

mumfor1standfinaltime · 06/11/2007 19:48

Moved ds into his Large cot at around 8 weeks I think. He had a moses basket which I put into the cot for a few days, then took it away, just to make him feel more secure and to get used to looking at 'bars'.

whomovedmychocolate · 06/11/2007 19:53

Northernlurker - that's actually what drove DD out of the bed in the end, I had her and DH either side of me, chuffing away like steam trains . All you'd hear is:

snore, snore, phhhhhauuurrrt, snore snore phurrrrtt

morningglory · 06/11/2007 19:55

Yes. DS was in his a cotbed from day 1. Swaddled tightly and put at the end of the bed, he was fine.

imaginewittynamehere · 06/11/2007 20:41

Susiemj - there was a small height difference for us - about an inch I think but worked fine - was a bit tricky with a cotbed though for me to get in & out of bed (especially post emergency csection!) so with hindsight a normal cot would be better.

You can get cots with 8+ positions which should allow you to get it right.

susiemj · 07/11/2007 10:06

Thanks imagine. I had thought about getting out of bed, especially as I've had SPD, but got tired of faffing about last night and have bought a cot bed. Fingers crossed!
