Should I ring midwife? Blood sugar readings

Good Early evening everyone

So I still haven't had a glucose test yet and I'm 31 weeks.. I have come back from previous blood tests as mildly anaemic but honestly I think the issue with how I'm feeling (blurred vision, lethargic, tired, increased urination etc) is from my blood sugar.

So today I bought a home monitoring kit.

I tested before I ate and my levels came back 11.6 Mmol/L
I ate my lunch. Then 2 hours later I tested again and it was 12.1 mmol/L

From what I'm seeing online, that is type 2 diabetes or Atleast way over the threshold for gestational diabetes

I'm due to see my consultant on Wednesday to talk about birth options/mental health issues but should I wait till then to present my own monitoring levels or should I ring someone sooner?

I feel quite faintish and usually a can of coke solves it for a short time but obviously I'm definitely not going to drink that again!

Anyone got advice? Sad

I would call over to your emergency maternity unit and let them know. They may want to get you in to check you over.

Crumpydump · 08/03/2021 17:28

Yeah, I'd call. I'd want that checked sooner not later.

Janxyb · 08/03/2021 17:37

I would call now. I had GD and my test levels were definitely lower than that x

NameChange1666 · 08/03/2021 17:43

Those readings as way too high - pre meal you should me looking at

SnooperTrooper12345 · 08/03/2021 17:43

The levels are fasting levels normally and should be fasting for 12 hours before.
However, I'd let them know of your concern.
If you're not high risk, they won't send you for a GD test

nocoolnamesleft · 08/03/2021 17:46

That's significantly high. Definitely call.

Whalewithnosnail · 08/03/2021 17:54

That is well over the threshold for gestational diabetes. Call and join the gestational diabetes UK Facebook group for invaluable advice.

I would call midwife as well.

Do you have any other symptoms?

@OverTheRainbow88

I would call midwife as well.

Do you have any other symptoms?

I've tried ringing, can't get through.

My vision is blurry at times, it has been for weeks now and I just feel so weak in general.
I just put it down to low iron but after researching I definitely think it's GD/ diabetes full stop

I got this from the nhs website:

You may be advised to:

eat regularly – usually three meals a day – and avoid skipping meals
eat starchy and low glycaemic index (GI) foods that release sugar slowly – such as wholewheat pasta, brown rice, granary bread, all-bran cereals, pulses, beans, lentils, muesli and plain porridge
eat plenty of fruit and vegetables – aim for at least 5 portions a day
avoid sugary foods – you do not need a completely sugar-free diet, but swap snacks such as cakes and biscuits for healthier alternatives such as fruit, nuts and seeds
avoid sugary drinks – diet or sugar-free drinks are better than sugary versions. Fruit juices and smoothies can also be high in sugar, and so can some "no added sugar" drinks, so check the nutrition label or ask your health care team
eat lean sources of protein, such as fish
It's also important to be aware of foods to avoid during pregnancy, such as certain types of fish and cheese.

Diabetes UK has more information about diet and lifestyle with gestational diabetes.

Exercise

Physical activity lowers your blood glucose level, so regular exercise can be an effective way to manage gestational diabetes.

You'll be advised about safe ways to exercise during pregnancy. Find out more about exercise in pregnancy.

A common recommendation is to aim for at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity activity a week, plus strength exercises on 2 or more days a wee

OverTheRainbow88 · 08/03/2021 18:18

Can you call the assessment unit?

PutOnAHappyFace · 08/03/2021 18:18

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but was your finger super clean? Just because I've done this before with my daughter and she had high results because she had not washed her hands and had residue on her fingers. Fine after a wash. Ignore me if you aren't as stupid as me.

Haha Grin yeah, I read this too.

I think I will do the test again in the morning after fasting for 12 hours and call them up again or just attend triage... I'm looking after my toddler right now and have no childcare/can't get hold of DH so I wouldn't be able to take her anyway.

The midwife said she will call me back later though Blush

I have GD and your readings are way above what mine are allowed to be so definitely get some advice.

SnooperTrooper12345 · 08/03/2021 20:46

Yes, you need to fast for at least 12 hours and check your levels. Your fasting levels should be below 6

Yep! Midwife just told me to check in the morning and if higher than 5.5 to give them a call straight away Grin

Good luck! ❤️

Carolina24 · 08/03/2021 22:16

Best of luck OP. If it is gestational diabetes there is a Facebook group called Gestational Diabetes UK which is excellent and very supportive.

PutOnAHappyFace · 10/03/2021 17:59

How did you get on OP? Hope you're ok.

GreenSlide · 10/03/2021 19:48

Also interested in how OP is doing! Those are very high blood sugar readings.

happytoday73 · 10/03/2021 19:52

Hello OP.. Was lurking, but now concerned about you... Hope all is OK...
