£200 for Birth & beyond online class - Is it worth experienced mums ?

Hi ladies,

I have been advised by my midwife to register for online classes run by local midwifes - due in June so ideally should take classes next month.

I am so confused ! Price of the class is £200 which i think is just too high or maybe thats the standard rate ! Sorry i am FTM

Asking for suggestions from experienced mums if its worth before i proceed with it,. Pls help

Sounds like a lot of money for online classes 😳

Babysharkdododont · 07/03/2021 19:10

What are you hoping to get out of it?
I can't see any value at all in doing an online class, but others might differ.
I didn't do NCT or anything, but did do an antenatal excercise class which was nice for making friends, but that happened over 20 weeks.

NameChange30 · 07/03/2021 19:13

When I was pregnant with DC1 there were a couple of free sessions, at the maternity hospital I think. Is there anything like that?

I've heard good things about the Positive Birth Company and their online course seems reasonable at just £39.

A lot of people do NCT classes to make friends with other local mums but I think there are other (cheaper) ways of doing that.

Chelyanne · 07/03/2021 19:16

I don't think free ones are worth the bother.
No way would I pay for such a thing.

Lockdownbear · 07/03/2021 19:20

How muchShock. Sounds a rip off to me.

The extent of my antenatal lessons was a MW who advised don't come into hospital too soon. And a friend who said let your body relax.

Mummyof2Terrors · 07/03/2021 19:36

I didn't do a single class and everything is fine. Sounds absolutely extortionate.

duckhouse · 07/03/2021 19:38

Thanks @SunnySideUp2020 @Babysharkdododont @NameChange30 @Chelyanne @Lockdownbear for response !! so seems like its not worth it !! I also feel that £200 is just too much.. these classes are run by my local maternity unit midwifes.
Wondering how did you train yourself then to expect what in labour, how to message a baby etc

Absolutely not, way too expensive. I'm a huge fan of The Positive Birth Company!

duckhouse · 07/03/2021 19:39

@Mummyof2Terrors thanks for your response ! How did you train yourself or maybe i should ask if any training is worth ? Like what to expect during labour, baby message etc

@GinWithLime ok, will check positive birth company.. hope its not that expensive !!

I did an antenatal class and I disagree with PPs that they are unnecessary. I think it's best to be informed so you can make informed choices - and of course things don't always go how you would choose but it's good to be aware of what could happen. I felt calmer having prepared. Of course you don't need a £200 course to prepare. I would do the £39 one, personally.

Did you read my first post? £39

Mummyof2Terrors · 07/03/2021 19:42

Honestly? Baby massage is a bit of a fad. I went to hartbeeps baby classes post birth etc and that's more of a social but some of the songs incorporate a bit of baby massage. I never purposefully massaged my baby and he's fine!

In terms of birth, message boards and reading real life experiences help. I'm a nerd so I read up on the protocols at my hospitals, what sort of pain relief would be available in each part of the hospital. I had a back to back baby with a 22 hour labour and willing to guarantee that the topic wouldn't have been discussed at any sort of baby 'training' class. You'll be fine, you'll get through it and feel absolutely indestructible after.

duckhouse · 07/03/2021 19:43

Ok @NameChange30, where can i find the classes options. I did check their website but cannot find the class option or am i looking at wrong place

I went to ‘bump to baby’ classes run by our local midwives that were free, if you google them there might be some in your area?

I found they were helpful, there was practising changing nappies on dolls and lots of info on breastfeeding. Your local library will probably have the positive birth company books if you wanted to read them before signing up to the classes. £200 seems far too expensive, I went to hypnobirtbing classes and they were only £50 and came with a book and cd!

NameChange30 · 07/03/2021 19:49

The Positive Birth book is not written/published by the Positive Birth Company, they are different. The book is also good though apparently.

ChocFondant · 07/03/2021 19:59

I did a course online from a mother place. It was a video course so you could do it in your own time whenever suits you best. Much more affordable and the information was clear and honest. I would recommend

Lockdownbear · 07/03/2021 20:01

I missed my free antenatal classes because I was ill hence chat with MW in hospital, I would probably have gone if I could.

Nobody tells the animals what to expect. You probably know quite a lot already from watching films.
I do remember a MW on the phone just before I went in to have my baby, 'remember your breathing' and within seconds had me taking long slow breaths.

I did baby massage sessions with my babies once they were here. But I bet you'd find it on YouTube.

SunnySideUp2020 · 07/03/2021 20:41

The positive birth book has got a lot of info, most of what's cover in antenatal classes.
I also did some hypnobirthing/ birth preparation online class that i found on midwife Marley webiste

midwifemarley.thinkific.com/courses/hypnobirthing-birth-body-prep

There is currently a 50% discount with code mm50 (saw that on Instagram)

I also purchased this antenatal course. Which also covers most things found in books etc..

www.amotherplace.com/online-antenatal-classes/

39 pounds...

Please do not pay 200!!!

Misty999 · 07/03/2021 20:53

These are free in wales the midwife gives you a code to login I didn't bother this time as I went to the F2F ones last time.

porridgeface · 07/03/2021 21:15

I've never done one, I bought myself a book, used pregnancy apps, Facebook baby groups and googled lots, I didnt feel underprepared for anything.
A few of my friends did NCT and enjoyed it for the social side but said they didn't get told anything they couldn't have found on the internet themselves.
Second pregnancy I did the positive birth company hypnobirthing, didn't cost too much and I found it really helped to keep me focused through my contractions.
