Although it is a bit invasive, transvaginal ultrasound is not painful and poses no risk to the pregnant person or fetus. Additionally, this test can provide key diagnostic information early in pregnancy—as well as the first photos of your tiny baby

It never did my DS any harm Wink
Congratulations!

Sonographer here, absolutely no risks to the baby otherwise they wouldn’t do it

AegonT · 06/03/2021 21:41

No risks and more comfortable than a vaginal exam or smear test.

bluedomino · 06/03/2021 21:46

I agree with AegonT, it's not as painful as a smear. Its more dignified as you are covered up. The sonographer let me insert it myself and just took over. You will be fine. Good luck.

I've had many of these, before and since getting pregnant as it's an IVF pregnancy. Totally safe. Weirdly I actually find them more comfortable than stomach ultrasounds as I don't like the pressure of the ultrasound wand on my stomach.

Giraffaelina · 06/03/2021 22:12

I had 3 of them, one at 6+5, 20 and 23 weeks. They were all absolutely fine, no negative impact whatsoever. Smile

VegetarianDeathCult · 06/03/2021 22:15

You can ask to insert it yourself. It’s fine.

firstimemamma · 06/03/2021 22:21

I had 2 transvaginal scans and then further down the line countless growth scans & everything was fine. Smilegot a healthy and happy toddler.

I think I’d not be having unnecessary ultrasounds. They are perceived as harmless but there is a lot of unknowns and limited current research. There is potentially a risk and ultrasonographers not sharing that suggests an awful lot of women not giving informed consent.

Clearly they are useful diagnostic tools when used as per NICE guidance as part of planned antenatal care. NICE suggests additional scans are not ideal and the RCOG advises against ultrasound before ten weeks unless clinically indicated.

NICE also advises against routine ultrasound beyond 24 weeks.

Thanks all. Do I need to have a full bladder? It doesn't say on the leaflet

Empty bladder for transvaginal.

Walesrecommendations · 07/03/2021 17:14

When I've been for them they've asked for full bladder to have a look abdominally then sent off to the loo to empty bladder for TVS. As PP say they really aren't as bad as they sound. I had them regularly from 5 weeks gestation.

Exactly this. I recently had one, where I arrived with a full bladder for the abdominal one, and then had to go to the loo before the transvaginal one.
