I've found my toothpaste and mouthwash triggers my nausea really badly! I'm going to the shops tomorrow and was wondering if anyone could recommend any blander/less offensive products? x

Omg I had this too, it was making me physically sick to brush my teeth some days 😞 all I can say is keep it short, just give them a quick once over with toothpaste, then use water to go over again to get rid of the taste. It did pass for me and I'm 16 weeks now no issues. I went to the hygienist on Thursday and explained and was really worried I'd caused myself damage but she said nope everything is perfect, cannot tell you've barely brushed your teeth for weeks 🤣
Good luck, I sympathise Thanks

No advice but I feel your pain! I used to get such a gag reflex when I was pregnant and had to brush my teeth.

sandgrown · 06/03/2021 07:32

My husband could never stand the “fizz” of toothpaste . He used the stuff in a little plastic bottle .I think it’s called Pearl Drops ?

ForeverBubblegum · 06/03/2021 07:40

I had this with both pregnancies, for me I think it was the mint that set it off. With my second I borrowed DS's strawberry flavour kids toothpaste, which was better. The fluoride levels are lower though, so it's not ideal but less damaging than acidy sick or skipping brushing. I tried to stick with 'proper' toothpaste as much as possible, and used the kids ones on days I was already feeling delicate.

Sailor2009 · 06/03/2021 07:43

I use arm and hammer toothpaste. It didn't make me gag because it's not minty. Can't offer any help with mouthwash. I'm at 37 weeks and I still haven't found one I can stand. Even the smell turns my stomach.

Oranurse unflavoured toothpaste still has flouride in it, you can get it on Amazon. I use it and it is very inoffensive.

I have this too. I found when we changed toothpaste it had a different taste (more of a spearmint?) and didn't bother me as much but part of it was just putting the toothbrush in my mouth towards the back.

Purpletomato · 06/03/2021 08:21

Deliberately breathing through your nose while you brush helps.

MissingCoffeeandWine · 06/03/2021 08:24

It never passed for me - but I do get bad sickness. But the bland baby toothpastes helped (tesco does one called milk teeth). I’m sure they are not advised for adults but for me, it was a step up from just using water which was all I could manage some days. Hope it’s better for you soon OP x

MagdasMadHouse · 06/03/2021 08:26

I couldn't brush my back teeth at all in the morning, or late at night. So at about 6pm I used to brush, floss and rinse properly, as that was my best time for nausea.

shouldistop · 06/03/2021 09:51

Try a child's toothpaste, they taste milder. Just stop using mouthwash for now.

Sunflowerx · 06/03/2021 10:51

I'm absolutely the same! Brushing my teeth seems to make me gag so so deeply to the point it hurts! I'm only 9 weeks so preying it starts getting better so cause I feel like I've not been able to properly brush my teeth for weeks!

Snowinsummer · 06/03/2021 16:20

I found this & the ones that didn't foam were so
much better. My favourite was Sarakan which you can get from health food shops/online.

FictionalCharacter · 06/03/2021 17:09

I had this too, and it wasn’t the taste of the toothpaste that did it, it was just the brushing. Sometimes had to make do with flossing and mouthwash.
Unfortunately it never fully went away - years later, brushing still sometimes makes me retch. It’s such a weird thing.

I had this too both pregnancy. Like the above post it’s the brushing and I still occasionally gag now!!

I had to have by with a little toothpaste on my finger and hope for the best!! The day after having her I could brush my teeth normally! Same with toast coffee couldn’t stand the smell without throwing up next day all fine!

FrogInAHat23 · 06/03/2021 17:14

You want UltraDex Daily Oral Rinse (mouthwash, in other words) - it's almost flavourless. Usually £6-8 for 500ml so not cheap, but worth it.

Thank-you everyone! xx

Another vote for oranurse!

SkankingMopoke · 11/03/2021 13:44

Is it the taste or the foam/rinsing around the mouth feeling?
It is the foam that sets me off with toothpaste (I'm not pregnant ATM, but it's always been a problem). I found using a very small sized pea of toothpaste is much better, and never to try and brush my teeth until I've been up for an hour or so. Mouthwash I can handle swilling around my mouth, but gargling makes me gag (even though I can happily gargle drinkable liquids) so I just don't.

Both to be honest! After making this post I ended up in hospital and diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum. I'm on meds for that now and back home. I can't gargle mouthwash anymore either, it causes the chemical smell to get up my nose even more. xx
