SPD

To me it seems as though SPD during pregnancy is more common than people realise. So why is there nothing in place to help?!

I’m currently 32 weeks and housebound. I’m so fed up. Deteriorating so quickly has seriously effected me and continues to while trying to complete everyday tasks. I hardly sleep as I wake up every few hours in pain. I have not had the chance to enjoy my first pregnancy, my mental health is constantly up and down. This has also seriously put me off expanding my family further and I am terrified of long term issues this will cause.

I was referred to my local hospitals physio department who aren’t doing face to face appointments because of covid. The advice given over the phone was ‘keep your knees together, use a gym ball to sit on, sleep with a pillow between your legs’

Surely this cannot be right? Why is this the only advice given to then be sent on your way? Basically being told to put up with it as it’s one of those things. I don’t know how I am going to cope for another 8 weeks.

Sorry you're in so much pain. I was crying in bed with agony with it so I found an osteopath who specialises in pelvic issues. After one treatment almost all pain had gone and after two i was completely pain free. I now see her every few weeks just to keep things in check. Check out the pelvicpartnership website to find recommended osteos in your area.

Tbh I find physios rubbish.
The best way to minimise the symptoms is to be strong pre-pregnancy but they never tell you about the condition on any ttc articles/sites. Once you have the full blown symptoms of it limiting your mobility is the best way to deal with the pain. I had it 1st with my 2nd but late on in pregnancy, with my 3rd got it earlier and with my twins I was already showing symptoms before the 2nd trimester. It was excruciating with the twins in the 3rd trimester as they were huge but I had 3 kids to look after and a husband with a broken leg from 26wk so I had to plod on. I suffered for 2 years after birth too but got to rock bottom and decided I wasn't going to live life that way. I started weightlifting, took me years but I repaired all the damage and became stronger than I've ever been. Currently 16+2wk and still lifting heavy in the gym. My hips have started with the early symptoms but atm all it has done is force me to reduce the weight I lift a bit sooner than I'd like, squats are down to 62.5% and deadlifts to 72% of what I was doing pre-pregnancy. Pretty good but still a bit depressing seeing my numbers dropping.

Hi op, I’m totally with you on this, I’m 31 weeks and have been suffering since just after Christmas to the point, like you say, movement is so restricted Im pretty much housebound. I mentioned it to the midwife at my 25 week appointment and I just got that I had to phone my gp to get referred to a physio, I did that the following day and still haven’t received an appointment! I did seek some private help and was given some exercises to do which I think have slowly helped but I am still really limited in what I can do.

Everything the @kensue19 said!! Google pelvic partnership.

You CAN do things that will hugely improve your quality of life now. You need someone who will manually manipulate your joints and put you back together.

I was pretty depressed during my last pregnancy (crutches at 25 weeks and totally housebound by about 31 weeks). This pregnancy is totally different because I've been seeing a (pregnancy trained) osteopath every 2-3 weeks since about 11 weeks.

It's just that the nhs doesn't treat it... I don't really know why tbh!! We're told to put up with it, but you really don't have to.

Find a (pregnancy trained) osteopath or chiropractor today. A list of recommended practitioners is on the pelvic partnership website, but there are others out there too!!! Mine is a miracle worker!!!

Today, I walked down the street to buy a sandwich!! Ok, there was some pain and discomfort, but not unmanageable. I'm 36 weeks (so huge). I'm not housebound this time and it's made all the difference to my mental health.

You don't have to be in this much pain.

I also went to a chiropractor, 2 appointments made a world of difference
