Anterior placenta - movements

Hi,

I’m 23 weeks tomorrow and the last week or two I’ve began to feel movement.

Sometimes it’s in the morning but more usually in the evening when I’m in bed.

How’s everyone else finding their movements with an Anterior placenta? I know that obviously the movement is cushioned and I’m sure I read on here a pattern doesn’t develop until around 28 weeks but I just wondered when should it be a cause for concern / call to Triage.

I have an anterior placenta. This is my second baby, first felt movements from 16 weeks. Only started feeling movements from 24 weeks this time and they were so inconsistent. Even now at 30 weeks I have quieter days where I don't feel much. I've been in for reduced movements twice so far. I think just go with your gut, they'd rather see you if you're worried, but most hospitals won't do a ctg until 26-28 weeks.

Hi OP, I'm coming up to 22 weeks with a fundal anterior placenta. 2 days ago I got a bit stressed out about having felt no movement at all so I spoke to my MW who kindly came out and checked us over with a doppler - she could actually feel him trying to kick the doppler away and was amazed that I could feel absolutely nothing. Late last night I think I felt the first movements, like two big bubbles popping, but nothing since, but I have found it reassuring that the MW could feel movements happening even when I couldn't so maybe give yours a call and ask if they will come out and have a listen for you?

Hey, I'm coming up to 32 weeks and would only now say I feel a consistent pattern. If I think I haven't felt baby in a while I put my hand on my tummy and I can feel the movement and kicks against my hand even though I don't feel anything without!

It has had me worried a few times and you should definitely speak to midwife about it as they'll be able to put your mind at rest.

I have an anterior placenta and am 18+4. Much to my surprise I started feeling movements at 16 weeks. Some day’s I feel strong little ‘pops’ with kicks even strong enough to feel with my hand on occasion, but other days I hardly feel anything at all. I’ve wondered if I should call about the day’s I’ve not felt movement, sometimes it’s been 2-3 day’s with hardly anything and then all of a sudden he’s really active again. I’m having a quiet day today so far after a few busy days. Think it’s normal to not feel consistent movement until at last 24 weeks. I believe it’s from 24 weeks that then say to report reduced movement x

I'm pregnant with #2 and am 27 and a bit weeks. I had anterior placenta in both pregnancies so I know no different.

With DC#1 I didn't feel anything until 20/21 weeks and then it was just tiny movements and not daily until a few weeks later. This time around I felt movement from 16/17 weeks and consistent movement each day from 21 weeks. I notice a pattern now and often if I'm busy or standing up I won't feel anything unless I put my hand firmly on bump. I usually have to be lying down or reclining on sofa and then suddenly baby goes nuts and you can feel lots and even see the kicks from the outside.

I think it can also really depend on where the placenta is too. In 1st pregnancy it was anterior and low, and due to how low the baby/bump is at first it meant the placenta cushioned a lot. In this pregnancy its anterior but high, which means it was out of the way a bit earlier and so I could feel some of those initial flutterings (plus I think I was more atuned to it this time, having had it before with DC#1). You'll start to find a more consistent movement pattern soon, and will pick up on times of day that baby is active and what positions you're more likely to feel baby in.

I have an anterior placenta, I felt first flutters around 18 weeks and proper kicks from around 22/23 weeks. Now 28 weeks and it never stops moving! Can’t imagine what having a posterior placenta feels like!

swiftt · 04/03/2021 13:40

I’m 26 weeks with anterior placenta. I went in for reduced movements at 24 weeks, I felt a bit daft as it was so early but they were happy to check the heartbeat. I mentioned being anterior and thought maybe that was why I felt less movements, but I was told that that shouldn’t make a difference once you start feeling movement. I think it just makes it take longer to initially feel them. I felt totally reassured after that and would have no hesitation in calling again if I was concerned. They’d rather see you than not.

I have an anterior placenta and am now at 32 weeks, I can feel him constantly and would say a pattern started to emerge at around 30 weeks. I think someone else said the same above, sometimes I can't feel and then I put my hand on my belly and can feel him rolling around. I wouldn't worry about consistent movements until 27/28 weeks onwards.

Luckyelephant1 · 04/03/2021 14:20

I'm FTM, 21+3 and anterior placenta. I think I started feeling vague flutters around late 19 weeks although at the time I thought they were gas bubbles as I'm quite bloated all the time. Since then they've gradually increased in frequency and strength but are still flutters/pulses rather than kicks and I can generally only feel them when sat still on the sofa in the evening, and even then not every day. Like PPs have said it's from 24 weeks that any reduced movement needs to be investigated.

Hi OP, I’m 29+ weeks pregnant - this time I have posterior placenta and felt movements from 15 ish weeks (and even though position is breach/back facing I can still reliably drink cold water lie down and feel some movement.

It’s so different from my previous pregnancy a year ago, when I had anterior placenta. I felt some movements at 25 ish weeks but never established a pattern at all. Would go in for monitoring and could see the movement on the screen but genuinely not feel it - even in the run up to birth. It was so hit and miss. Sometimes I could grab a whole foot. Other times there was hours where I couldn’t tell how baba was. I was advised to always go in if worried. They’ll usually put you on a monitor in my area only post 28 weeks. Before that they may listen with a Doppler.

Just posting as I know when I was experiencing it before, I was so worried that I never “got” the pattern and thought I was doing something wrong.

Now I know it’s just different babies and different experiences! Still get checked (always do!). But maybe don’t be too hard on yourself if it never quite gets “predictable” if that makes sense?

Vogue1992 · 04/03/2021 21:35

Thank you all for your responses, it definitely varies doesn’t it. I’ve felt slight movement this evening which is reassuring x x

I’m waiting to be seen now I contacted my local hospital and they advised despite a pattern not developing until 28 weeks anything less than previous experiences should be checked. Hopefully everything is OK and thank you so much for your advice x x

@Vogue1992 hope everything is OK. Makes me wonder if I should have been calling when I have my quiet days! I'll feel baby lots for 2-3 days and then hardly at all for a day or two in between x

Vogue1992 · 05/03/2021 17:29

@MintGreenLife everything was absolutely fine, thank you. I felt silly going there but the Midwife was lovely. She said that because I’m 23 weeks the movement isn’t that ‘strong’ but over the coming weeks when Baby is bigger I’m likely to feel it a lot more and it won’t be mistaken for anything else. Hope you’re OK x x
