Morning sickness and work

I found out I was pregnant a few days ago. Total shock! (Wasn't planned at all and only took a pregnancy test because I had a cheap one laying around from ages ago!)

The thing that is concerning me is telling my boss. I had my two children 22 months apart so have already taken 2 lots of maternity. I have only been back to a work a year.

I know it's sounds crazy but I feel a bit embarrassed tbh.

I want to avoid telling work until I am between 14-16 weeks.

Anyone been in a similar situation and managed to work until that time?

I am also already suffering from sickness and nausea (last pregnancies it didn't start until 6 weeks! )

I didn’t tell my work until I was 20 weeks, but it was my first pregnancy and I wasn’t showing until then, and I also had a job where I worked alone in an isolated area for most of the day so could easily run to the loo to gag/be sick without attracting attention. I couldn’t have done it if I worked in an office or something like that. I don’t think you need to be embarrassed anyway. The only reason I didn’t tell my employers was because they had form for mistreating employees so I wanted to go under their radar for as long as possible. If yours have been accommodating in the past I wouldn’t worry too much.

Thanks for replying. Wow 20 weeks! That's amazing. I hadn't fully lost my baby tummy from my last pregnancy so I think I'll show sooner. I suppose I'll just have to make a judgement call nearer the time.

I suppose I'm just dreading the, "pregnant again!! Do you know how condoms work" banter.

I am a primary school teacher so if I can get to 14/16 weeks then the school year is nearly at an end. I will then have the option to leave at 29 weeks in late August and then maybe take a career break as I can't see me working with 3 under 5 and a teenager at home.

I didn’t tell my bosses until 16 weeks with both of mine, I felt nauseous but never actually threw up which helped I guess! With the 2nd I showed sooner but nobody noticed, perhaps people just don’t look as hard as you’d expect..!

That's good to know! Thank you.

I told my boss at 14wks but no one else at work until 19wks with my 3rd as I was in a similar position (17m gap). However when I worked in a school I had to let them know about my 4th at 6wks as I was team teach trained and about to be placed as 1-1 with a child who lashed out so I didn't want to risk that.

With this one (5th) I've started telling people at 24wks, I've not shown sooner with subsequent pregnancies but I've been fatter to start with which has helped to hide 😂😬

I didn’t tell my work until 20 weeks with DD. I’d just come back from maternity not long before and also have had 3 losses post 14 weeks so wanted to make sure everything was ok before I said anything.

mrscbson · 04/03/2021 11:29

@BurningBenches that's good to know.
I had a meeting with my head yesterday and he was already talking about rows next academic year! Felt bad but it's too soon to mention.

@Vodkabulary I absolutely don't want to say anything until I am sure everything is ok. Relieved to know that it's quite normal to wait until 14-20 weeks to tell work.

I work in a school. I’m 14 weeks and haven’t said anything and I plan to tell them next week.

Luckily lockdowns helped as I’ve been in the office less. I had evening sickness and nausea which helped aswell. I’m
Not showing but I have some extra chub so this has helped conceal it better Grin
I have chose not to tell them as I haven’t worked there long and have no
Idea on how they will react so... putting it off as long as I can.

mrscbson · 05/03/2021 17:08

@Darklava09 it's strange isn't it?! I feel awkward about it. Probably because I know the workload on schools at the moment and I just think attitudes will change towards me if they know.

@mrscbson yea that’s my exact reason too! I take a huge amount of pressure off of the staff in my role so I feel like they will not be best pleased with it but equally we are allowed to be mothers and have families.

They have to be careful with their attitude to not be seen as discriminatory but we all know they sometimes are deep down.

I’ll let you know how it goes

mrscbson · 05/03/2021 17:57

@Darklava09 Please do! I'm feeling more confident about getting to 14-16weeks now!

@mrscbson just to let you know I’ve told work! Went fine. Nothing to worry about really

MeadowHay · 11/03/2021 19:32

I've had to tell work at 6 weeks both times due to having to go off sick with HG. Hate being forced to do that. Obviously all my colleagues aren't told just my line manager, his manager and HR. I will tell colleagues when I return from sick leave post-12 week scan etc which if I'm honest is sooner than I'd like but equally feel like I need an explanation for my long sick leave and in any event I'm sure they've all figured it out this time anyway as last time with HG is the only other time I've ever been on sick leave

mrscbson · 13/03/2021 12:21

@Darklava09 fantastic news!

@MeadowHay sometimes it's just easier to tell isn't it.

First day back at work after lockdown:

  1. A colleague asked my teaching assistant if I was pregnant.
  2. a little girl in my class was looking at my stomach thoughtfully and then said, "Mrs Hobson are you having a baby?"

I was only 5 weeks! Obviously just said laughed both of the comments off. You can't escape the intuitive people hey!

Other than that I find working with morning sickness almost better. Wondering if there's some science behind adrenaline and not feeling as bad. I can barely get off the sofa on my days off - the nausea is so bad EnvyConfused
