Heart Palpitations

Hi all,

This may sound so silly to even ask this but just want to be sure I’m not wasting anyone’s time.

Since Friday I’ve been experiencing really bad heart palpitations like every few minutes to the point they have been keeping me awake.

I do get them on and off on the run up to my period so I know that when I’m hormonal I get them quite bad never mind being 31 weeks today.

I’m not sure if I should call the maternity unit or try my GP first, or if I should just put it down to a pregnancy symptom. I can still feel baby move about but it’s went on for so long now that my anxiety is sky high which won’t be making it any better.

Did anyone else have this issue when pregnant? Did it go away at any point? I hate being a nuisance so worrying about calling makes me worse.

Thanks

You need examining by a doctor and potentially bloods with an ECG. Pregnancy puts a strain on the heart so heart palpitations should not be ignored. I would phone your triage unit and ask to come in for an examination.

It may be nothing to worry about but you can only assume that in retrospect once you have a normal examination.

Definitely worth getting checked out.
I had heart palpitations in pregnancy and it turned out to be just because of low iron and once I was on some supplements they went away
Hope you're ok

I have heart palpitations and my resting HR is about 90-95 which is very high compared to pre-pregnancy where it was about 55-60. I've had this from about 28 weeks, I'm now 32 weeks. It regularly goes above 100 throughout the day when I'm just sat down not doing much.

It was first flagged as an issue when I went into triage and they monitored mine and baby's heartrate for 4 hours including ECGs, blood tests etc. My GP was concerned it might be an underactive thyroid (which I never had pre-pregnancy). My bloods also came back completely clear for everything. My midwife however didn't seem concerned and kept saying it isn't unusual, so now I'm kind of stuck not knowing. I think I will be referred to a cardiologist as the next stage.

I think its better to flag it now so its in your records!

It’s very common in pregnancy due to the extra blood you have but you should speak to your GP / midwife.

Hi all, thanks for all your comments.

I’ve spent the morning over at the maternity unit, they listened to baby’s heart, mine, done ECG, bloods and have referred me for 24 hour monitor.

The bloods are as a PP has said to rule out thyroid issues (which I know it won’t be)

My heart rate is between 74-90 at resting which is still normal but high for me but the palpitation is like my heart is missing a beat and then it thuds as if my heart is restarting. Then I worry and it gets worse, horrible cycle.

But I’ve been checked over and there is nothing really more they can do - probably just need to put up with it until baby is here.

That’s exactly what I had in both of my pregnancies. It’s called ectopic beats. As I say it’s normal and will likely resolve itself once you’ve given birth but good they’re looking after you
