What do winter babies wear?

Ds1 was born at the start of the long, hot summer of 2006, and just wore sleepsuits or bodysuits (with or without arms and legs). It occurs to me that I have no idea what a winter baby should wear (ds2 due Feb). Do they need lots of layers?

And what do you put on them to go out and about (in the pushchair, not the car)?

I gave away all my baby clothes after ds1 was born thinking I'll never do that again.

Ive got ds2 due in Dec.
Ive just got sleepsuits and little cardi's for when we are in the house.
For going out he will have his clothes on and ive bought a snowsuit, wooly hat and mitts.
Ive got a cosy toes for the pushchair and ive got loads of little blankets for the pram as well.
I would go with layers then at least they can be taken off if your in shops etc where its warm.

Leedle t-shirt body suit under the full body suit then maybe a top over that, then coat/warm jumper (depending on weather) and blankets. Hats are essential.

leesmum · 05/11/2007 13:44

Hi ASDA do long sleeved vests which keep them snuggly under a sleepsuit.x

these are blardy brilliant
they don't slip down like they do in a blanket
feet stay warm
don't have to thread tiny newborn arms through yet another sleeve
no need for separate hat
easy to unwrap when you go into a shop etc

Sarahjct · 05/11/2007 13:58

Mrs B they look lovely! Do they do them in adult sizes?

I want to order one but I hate this 0-3, 3-6 months nonsense. Why can't they make a one size fits all job?!

MuffinMclay · 05/11/2007 14:49

Thanks for that. Now I'd better get shopping.

Mrs B - I those look fab!

dd was a december baby, bless her, and it was a bit of a sod taking her out, especially going from the freezing cold into hot shops etc. I generally dressed her in long sleeve vests, babygro or similar, knitted cardi and a couple of blankets in the pram, plus a hat (this was a pram with a proper carrycot, so she wasa very sheltered and covered up). Mitten were a no-no - she hated them from an early age - so just tried to ensure that her arems were under the blankets. At least with these layers, if we were inside in the warm for a period it was easy to whip off a blanket/hat/cardi so she didn't get too hot.

oh mrs badger, that's such an adorable link of bug in a rug. i have just opened it at work and am having to hold back coo'ing and showing it to make colleagues who really don't care and are a bit bored with my pregnant ramblings....

puts me in mind of that film, Jack and Sarah. Richard E Grant's character has to take the newborn home from hospital, but doesnt have any warm clothes. he's puts baby in a jiffy bag with a sock in its head. nothing reduces me to mindless jibbering idiot quite as much as the image of baby in jiffy bag....

daisynova · 05/11/2007 18:31

Tyaca - I love that scene too!!!

BellaBear · 05/11/2007 18:41

MrsBadger, thanks for that link, have just ordered one!

MuffinMclay, thansk for strating this thread, I realised I wanted to ask the same question when I saw it!

tinytotmummy · 05/11/2007 18:46

Another vote for bug in a rug. 3 week old dd has been looking very cute and snuggly in hers. She has the extreme version. Sooo easy to use.

MuffinMclay · 05/11/2007 19:03

What is the sizing like on the bug in a rugs? Will a 0-3 months last until 3 months (for an average sized baby)?

ds was a january baby. in the house he wore a vest and a sleepsuit (I don't think I actually dressed him properly for about 2 months ). Going out, I used to put a cardi, hat and coat on him and put blankets over the top, but it was a bugger in shops as he got really hot. So if I was going downtown, I used to put a cardi on him and put about 3 blankets over the top, then I could easily whip them off ina shop.

The hardest thing was not keeping him too warm. If you layer with blankets, you can always take some off.

MuffinMclay · 05/11/2007 19:16

I'm not too worried about going to shops etc. I will be taking the baby out for dog walks on cold mornings though for 30-45 minutes at a time.

DD1 was born at the end of jan and she just had baby vest, babygrow or sleepsuits with a cardigan.

When we went out she wore snowsuits.

Your can get thicker babygrows rather then just thin cotton one IYKWIM.

I think the answer is layers is the answer so you can add or remove according to the need.

tinytotmummy · 05/11/2007 20:35

DD has the 0-3m bug. She was 7lb and 21 inches long and I think it will just about last her until she's three months - length is more the issue than weight as there is plenty of wrap to go round. Think the 3-6m might be a little on the large side to keep a newborn snug. Shame you're not having a girl, you could have had mine - dd will have grown out of it by Feb!

bunnyhunny · 05/11/2007 22:11

for dog walks, we either put clothes over the sleepsuit + vest, then a coat, and blankets (it WAS bloody cold!), or even better, get a harness, put him in a snowsuit and pull your coat round him. nice and snug!

ninedragons · 06/11/2007 01:35

I read "top over that" as "top hat", and actually got as far as thinking, hmm, that sounds weird but potentially cute. Beansprout must be going for the full Winston Churchill baby look.

Bloody pregancy brain.

What do they wear at night? I have bought a couple of those bag things, but they don't appear to be amazingly warm - I have two thick duvets and a blanket on my bed by midwinter, so I'm really concerned about the baby.

MuffinMclay · 06/11/2007 09:41

A sleepsuit and grobag are fine at night, as long as the room is at about 18 degrees.

Ooh I hadn't considered the going into shops aspect! DD was older (born in May) but I used to do lots of layers with her in winter. Am thinking will probably be easier with a newborn cos she used to want to get out of the buggy when I tried to remove layers.

They say you shouldn't but our house was freezing so I used to put a cellular blanket over the grobag in the depths of winter. She'd be wearing a vest and sleepsuit under that. She never seemed too hot like that but would wake up cold without the blanket
