Please, PLEASE could some experienced mammas help a newbie here. I'm nearly 8 weeks pregnant and really struggling. About 3 weeks ago I started to wake up during the night with a severely blocked nose and it's gradually got worse. I'm lucky if I get 5 hours sleep during the night and it's never with out waking up at least 3 times struggling to breath through my nose.
On a whole most nights I've been getting about 3 hours and I'm starting to feel like a walking zombie.
I've read that this can last throughout the entire pregnancy.. please tell me this isn't true?
I've tried the following:
Humidifier
Vicks nasal inhaler and rub
A.Vogul sinus force
Air purifier
Steamer
Saline nasal spray
Sinus rinses
Nasal strips

Sorry for the long post but I'm struggling to cope with day to day activities due to feeling like utter rubbish.

I went to my doctors who prescribed me Dymista nasal spray, however after researching this I am yet to take it as one; it's not got a lot of research and two; the research it has shows birth defects.
Is there any thing I can do?

I do suffer with season allergenic rhinitis and have taken dymista for it but it's too early in the season for allergies.

Thanks in advance

I've seen a few posts from people who have said their hayfever has started already so it could be that. There are antihistamines you can take in pregnancy plus corticosteroid nasal sprays

Oh really?

That's interesting as I just dismissed that as a possibility - thank you! Xx

@Hfe10 my very first early pregnancy symptom with each of my pregnancies has been a blocked nose.

I’m over 10 weeks now and it’s still as blocked as ever. It’s hard at night and first thing in the mornings.

I remember having it pretty much on and off throughout my entire pregnancies before so am anticipating it being the same this time 😩

Oh no 😩
Bless you it's super annoying isn't it!

Mine is the same - at the night it's horrendous and it eases off as the day goes on.
I'm hoping my body will sort of just get use to it so I can get some sleep!

Thank you xx

Otrivine maybe? The natural one though with eucalyptus - that might help Smile.

my hayfever has started already! Tree pollen can kick it all off at this time of year! had definitely already got a stuffy nose in the early weeks of pregnancy, and this is adding to it!
encouraged to read might be able to take nasal sprays as pharmacist told me i couldnt, and usually i find they really help - might try again!
good luck, hope u get some sleep soon!

Pregnancy rhinitis is absolutely bloody awful and was the bane of my life. I never really found anything that was massively effective. But it does disappear literally within hours of giving birth, if that helps at all.

I feel your pain, Op Thanks

@leftitlate37 a pharmacist may not sell it to you and you may need a prescription from a gp

leftitlate37 · 02/03/2021 10:34

Thank you thats good to know!

It helps when I sleep with my head more upright. When I sleep lying flat, I am terribly blocked all morning!

Omg ! I’m 24 weeks pregnant and I have struggled so much but I had no idea it was to do with the pregnancy

Mines was really bad first and third trimester. 2 days to go hopefully!!! Not usually a hayfever sufferer so sure it isn't that. It wasn't too bad during the second trimester!! No tips though sadly!

A bit of hope.

I had this really bad but now almost 30 weeks and it's cleared up.

There is a product widely-sold in France for sinusitis called n-acetyl cysteine or NAC, it's natural in that it's a substituted amino acid.

It's mucolytic, thins the crud so that it can drain out easily and not lurk around and get infected.

In pregnancy the membranes that line the sinus cavities swell so you get blocked more easily, along with the joys of piles etc.

Please check with a GP. Btw it's available on prescription. Std dice is 200mg, when I get bunged up I take 2 x 600mg capsules to avoid antibiotics, but then I'm not pregnant.

I had my sinuses ventilated, 2 years later got pregnant and it's been downhill ever since - for 25 sodding years.
