Please, PLEASE could some experienced mammas help a newbie here. I'm nearly 8 weeks pregnant and really struggling. About 3 weeks ago I started to wake up during the night with a severely blocked nose and it's gradually got worse. I'm lucky if I get 5 hours sleep during the night and it's never with out waking up at least 3 times struggling to breath through my nose.
On a whole most nights I've been getting about 3 hours and I'm starting to feel like a walking zombie.
I've read that this can last throughout the entire pregnancy.. please tell me this isn't true?
I've tried the following:
Humidifier
Vicks nasal inhaler and rub
A.Vogul sinus force
Air purifier
Steamer
Saline nasal spray
Sinus rinses
Nasal strips

Sorry for the long post but I'm struggling to cope with day to day activities due to feeling like utter rubbish.

I went to my doctors who prescribed me Dymista nasal spray, however after researching this I am yet to take it as one; it's not got a lot of research and two; the research it has shows birth defects.
Is there any thing I can do?

I do suffer with season allergenic rhinitis and have taken dymista for it but it's too early in the season for allergies.

Thanks in advance

I sympathise. Mine was horrendous and I could barely breathe when it got really bad. Thankfully it eased off just before 20 weeks, I know I was ok by my second scan.

I was prescribed the same and did use it, which helped a lot (have to admit I didn't do the research you did though - I could barely breathe so probably would have used it anyway).

I hope yours eases off soon x

I have this annoying thing too, didn't get it in my other pregnancies.
As I'm a side sleeper and I only tend to get 1 nostril completely blocked during the night so it doesn't wake me (the frequent toilet trips do instead). I clear my nose frequently but I just feel bungled up all the time, I've just got used to it and plod on.
Unfortunately it will linger until after birth.

I have no suggestions as you've tried all the things I have already.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. Gives me a bit of hope that yours eased off. Could I just ask being as you used Dymista that everything was ok with your little one? Maybe I've researched too much and got into a panic 🙈

Sorry to be another bearer of bad news, but it can often last until birth. I'm 39 weeks with my 3rd baby and was the same with all of them. I'm surviving by using Neilmed saline rinse, and decongestant nasal spray which you aren't meant to use during pregnancy, or for more than a week. I just couldn't function without it though so am taking the risk and using it just at night.
When I'm not pregnant I use a steroid nasal spray called Nasonex, could be similar to what you've been prescribed.
Unfortunately it's yet another delightful symptom that they usually say the only cure for is birth!

Oh noConfused

That was what I was worried about, thanks for getting back to me.

Did you use the decongestant nasal spray with all your pregnancy's? - and no negative effects caused?
I might look into one if so.

Thanks again xx

I had this with my first and I'm really sorry to say that nothing I did worked. I tried a cold water mister, nose strips, spray. It lasted until birth too.

Second baby, no trace of it!

Hope you are luckier than I was!

Oh no😩 At least I can prepare for it to last until October - and just pray it doesn't come again if and when I have another!

Thank you xx

I’m using this: Rhinocort (Budesonide) steroid nasal spray. It’s the only thing I’ve found that helps! Otherwise I wake myself up snoring as one nostril is blocked.

MrsBtobe2020 · 01/03/2021 13:38

I've also got this, every morning one nostril is completely blocked and I'm constantly blowing my nose. I'm surviving off neilmed sinus rinse morning and evening religiously and mometasone steroid nasal spray (occasionally). The breathe right strips did help a bit and I have a humidifier at night too.

Ah thank you, did your doctor prescribe it for you? Is it safe to use in first trimester? Thank you xx

Aw it's a nightmare isn't it. Glad you've found a bit of relief xx

I ordered Rhinocort myself from one of the online pharmacies after doing my own research.

I’m not saying you should just order online btw, worth speaking to your GP about a steroid nasal spray. Smile My GP isn’t very helpful so I took matters into my own hands. I am also in my third trimester so feel there is less risk.

Omg. Thank you so so much for this! I've been searching for information like this, so you've helped a lot. I've also just ordered Rhinocort aqua online and it's coming tomorrow. I'm only 8 weeks so hoping if I use it for a few weeks just to get some sleep!

I take cetirizine hydrochloride (hay fever tablets) as I have allergies all year round, and it’s got worse in pregnancy! They work a treat for me xx

littleshopofwidgets · 04/05/2021 20:54

@Hfe10 I’m not sure if you’re still following this thread but I also suffered from rhinitis very early on in my pregnancy - the congestion gave me sinus headaches every weekend and I was taking paracetamol so frequently I needed to find another way of managing it.

What worked for me was drinking lots of water - 4 litres a day (you may need to play around this a bit but with 3 litres I still got my headaches) and running the humidifier all night (which you already seem to be doing). When the congestion got really bad I took sinupret forte it’s a homeopathic tablet commonly used in Germany and Switzerland (considered safe for pregnant women).

Worth asking your GP/Obstetrician about it (my consultant ob ok’d it) and it really saved me from getting congestion and headaches and could function normally again.
