Slightly raised inflammation levels

I had to go in to hospital yesterday as I was having unbearable pain in my midsection/ribs that was radiating round to my back and then up to my shoulder tips, I also vomited and got really sweaty and shaky. I literally couldn’t move my partner had to physically dress me and pull me along to walk to the car. I’m 22 weeks so went to the maternity assessment unit, they took my BP and some bloods and by that point the pain had gone and I felt generally fine.

My blood pressure was good but blood results came back and they said my inflammation levels were slightly raised so it could mean I’m coming down with an infection so to take it easy, I mentioned I work from home anyway and the midwife said I should still take the week off work to rest and get plenty of fluids as if I do come down with something I shouldn’t be working. So this morning I’ve let my manager know and she was very sceptical and I could tell she didn’t quite believe me so now I’m going to worry about that as well as I have anxiety and worry about everything.

I tried asking if there’s anything I should be looking out for in terms of the raised inflammation levels and they said not really just a fever. They also didn’t seem too concerned about my symptoms that I had in the first place and didn’t know what caused it all but gave me dihydrocodeine for the pain if I get it again.

What if I don’t end up ‘coming down with something’ this week, should I go back to get follow up bloods to see if my inflammation levels are still raised? And does anyone have a clue on what could have caused my symptoms?

I just don’t want there to be an underlying issue that could harm the baby 😣

Sorry for all you’ve been though OP and hope you’re feeling a bit better now.

Without risking giving specific medical advice, raised inflammatory markers (most likely CRP) are a very non-specific measure of inflammation in the body which can originate from infection or injury.

A raised CRP therefore isn’t a condition in itself that can be treated, it is a sign of something else potentially going on. It’s very common in even mild infections such as a cold. It shouldn’t have any effect on baby.

If you are otherwise well at the moment there isn’t any need to worry or to ask for a repeat blood test. If your symptoms get worse definitely contact 111.

My levels are always higher than normal! No one has ever checked to see why. 🤦🏼‍♀️. I assume it's either my ibs or pcos.

@Skymum82 @MrsBotibolsCruise thank you both my mind is definitely more at ease now! I didn’t even think about ibs could be causing it as I have ibs too!

I was freaked out at first as the nurse said it needs to be looked into, doctor wasn't bothered. Then a few years later ended up in a&e due to breathing issues and rib pain, and again it showed it increased she couldn't answer and said it could be anything 🤦🏼‍♀️
