I wouldn't be flying anywhere at the moment pregnant or not.

Brenna24 · 01/03/2021 08:23

I gave birth at 34 weeks. I wouldn't be doing it in ordinary times and definitely not in a pandemic.

Covid aside, I went on holiday to Italy at 33 weeks as I really wanted to - in April time. I kept on tightening on and off (low risk pregnancy and in the end birth) and just felt generally pretty crap. It was a beautiful place but I felt enormous and very vulnerable. Other friends have had lovely times on baby moons but I wouldn’t do it again and certainly not with covid - what if you tested positive and weren’t allowed to go home for an extra 10 days/2 weeks?

Twizbe · 01/03/2021 08:38

In normal times maybe, but this year I wouldn't. It's just not worth the hassle of having to isolate / not being able to be vaccinated.

Stick to the UK this year

Doyouwantanothercuppa · 01/03/2021 08:45

Well I gave birth at 32 weeks and DD spent 3 weeks in the Neonatal Unit. Imagine going through that but in Spain with Spanish doctors and nurses. Nightmare!

Teakind · 01/03/2021 08:56

No I wouldn't, especially with covid around.

The previous poster who mentioned access to 24 triage being important had a really good point. If you were worried about something like reduced movements then you would want to be seen quickly.

Why not book a lovely UK break instead? Much less to worry about and there are some gorgeous places to visit.

brushlaptop · 01/03/2021 08:58

Yeah doesn't seem worth it... I used to live in Spain and speak Spanish fluently (this is to visit people I used to live with) but the heat being that pregnant would be pretty awful... odd that insurance and airlines say it's fine up to 36 weeks I literally don't know anyone who has flown at that stage!

We flew to Italy to see DH's family when I was 27 weeks (3 hour flight) and I was so uncomfortable. My ankles swelled up within an hour of takeoff and didn't really go down until I had DS, with the added complication of covid I really wouldn't.

HeyDW96 · 01/03/2021 09:30

It probably is safe up to 36 weeks for essential purposes like to get to a sick family member or something but I don't think a holiday to Spain during a pandemic is classed as being essential. Personally I'd fear I would die of overheating and my ankles exploding but that's just me!

Mseddy · 01/03/2021 19:48

Part of my job is repatriating poorly children and premature babies from abroad. After seeing some of the neonatal units in well developed European countries, I wouldn't go anywhere after 22 weeks. Not that I'd go abroad pregnant at the moment anyway! I'm worried about going to Cornwall when I'm 26 weeks as I'll be 2 hours drive from a tertiary neonatal unit! I think you are mad

treesall · 01/03/2021 19:52

I flew at about 32 weeks with my first to Tenerife. I wouldn't do it again. There was no issue at all with flying etc, but I had a day halfway through the holiday where I had no movements, and I was distraught with worry. At home I'd have been able to call the hospital and go and get checked, but it was far more complicated and difficult to do that abroad. I spent several hours hugely stressed and was literally about to go to the hotel reception to ask them where the nearest hospital was and the baby moved. Whilst I had all the appropriate insurance etc, it was just so much more stressful not being able to get help as easily.

SenoraSurf · 02/03/2021 16:48

I think it's a lovely idea and will be great to give you a rest from mundane day to day life.
Make sure you have your notes and you know where the nearest hospitals are (including a translator if needed). Enjoy yourself and it'll be fine Grin

SenoraSurf · 02/03/2021 16:50

Just read your post- I will be 34 weeks in august and am planning to go over for 10 days... I'm in the same position as you with family there and am Spanish. Lots will scare you on Mumsnet but you have to be comfortable with what you are capable of. As long as you prepare for the worst, you'll be fine. Weigh up the risks of things going wrong with the benefits and higher likelihood of everything being fine.

skeggycaggy · 02/03/2021 16:57

I’m not risk averse - I went to Morocco at about 28w with my first - but I think it would be so much easier just to plan a nice break within the UK. There are so many unknowns this year.
