Having a baby without a bath tub?

I do currently have a bath tub but I’ll be moving house before I give birth and the new place only has a shower. Is this an issue? I was planning on picking up a baby bath. Someone mentioned to me recently that babies need bath tubs, and now I’m panicking!

Get a pop up baby bath. Easy to store then once old enough child can shower and you can use the baby bath as a washing basket.

Mamabearwhere · 28/02/2021 18:16

Absolutely no need don’t panic. Get a baby a baby bath which will see you through for a fair few months. After they’re a bit bigger and they can’t stand up you can teach them to sit on a stool or stand while having a shower.

Helenluvsrob · 28/02/2021 18:16

I’m sure you aren’t the only mum without. Bath tub 😂

A baby can be conveniently bathed in the kitchen sink when they are small - saves your back for a start. Then a baby bath, or storage box ( which we did on holiday ) in the shower base , the they get in the shower with you.

More to the point you don’t get to wallow and relax 😂

We stupidly redid three bathrooms at the same time when our second was about 6 months, and they both loved having a bath in those flexi tubs you can buy in DIY shops. In fact the oldest mentioned it again a few months later and we did them again (this time in the garden as it was summer). They loved it!

It’s fine.

Small babies are best off in baby baths anyway as they are more supportive and use less water.

You can get inflatable baths that fit in the shower tray so just fill that and let them sit in it.

Then when they get bigger they’ll shower. Don’t stress about it.

BertieBotts · 28/02/2021 18:19

Why would they need a bath tub! You just need a way to wash them.

Baby baths are fine when they are tiny and once they can stand reliably they can have a shower. If you need something in between or they don't like water going on their head, you can just use a flexible trug tub or even an inflatable paddling pool in the shower cubicle.

Shnuggle is hands down the best baby bath by the way!

olderthanyouthink · 28/02/2021 18:20

DD was bathed in the kitchen sink, then a shnuggle bath (best baby bath!) on the counter or in the big bath but shower would have been fine, then from 10 months (walking) she showered with me.

She only regularly uses the bath as a toddler because our en-suite is in a state, id rather be using the shower tbh

Howshouldibehave · 28/02/2021 18:21

I used to bath mine in the kitchen sink when they were small, even though we did have a bath! It was a better height and easier for the back.

I don't have a shower. My DS is 15 months and in a schnuggle toddler bath at the end of the shower tray and once he's standing he will go in the shower with me or DH. Schnuggle baby bath for the newborn, bottom of shower tray too. It's no bother at all.
Mummyof2Terrors · 28/02/2021 19:08

Don't have a bath even, only a shower. Damn the lack of edit button.

RandomMess · 28/02/2021 19:11

My then 6 year old used to have a soak in a large baby bath sat in the shower tray.

Chelyanne · 28/02/2021 19:17

You can get plenty of baby baths and bigger inflatable ones.

A fitted bath is much better for a family, we've had 4 in ours at a time when they were younger, still have 3 youngest girls in together and older 2 use shower (over bath).

SameToo · 28/02/2021 19:17

I had a foam support that I lay the baby on and hosed her down with the shower 😂 my first didn’t have an actual bath until she was about 2.5.

TooMinty · 28/02/2021 19:25

My MIL has a really good inflatable baby/toddler bath that sits in the shower tray. The best thing is you can shut the shower screen door and it keep the noise and water inside! (not for newborns obviously, sink or plastic baby bath is fine for tinies)

Parker231 · 28/02/2021 19:27

We didn’t use a baby bath after they were six months. We took them into the shower with us until the could safely stand. So much quicker.

PurBal · 28/02/2021 19:34

Most people I know just bathe their little ones in the kitchen sink.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 28/02/2021 19:40

I’d use the kitchen sink to begin with, followed by a £10 Argos paddling pool in the bottom of the shower after that if needed. Some little ones do not like the feel of the shower on their skin

CoffeeRunner · 28/02/2021 19:45

It’s absolutely fine! We have a bathtub at home but spent a lot of time at our holiday home when DD was a baby, and we only had a shower cubicle there.

We used a baby bath in front of the fire at first & then a friend gave us a sort of seat thing (looked a bit like the ones you use to adapt a normal chair to a high chair but was for the bath) and she sat in that in the shower cubicle until she could stand.

swiftt · 28/02/2021 20:30

Great! Thanks everyone. Definitely going to get a shnuggle now.

You'll be fine. We used the kitchen sink for the first couple of months, and then we got a Schnuggle. That lasted until she was 12 months old, then we got a slightly bigger Schnuggle-type bath. She's not had a full-size bath yet!

Heathcliff27 · 28/02/2021 20:40

You'll be fine as everyone has said. But me personally couldnt live without a bath tub and when buying our house didn't even go to view any that didnt have a tub.

Mylittlesandwich · 28/02/2021 20:46

I had plans to get a bath put in but we still haven't. DS is 15 months and doesn't walk or stand unsupported yet. He still has a bath in an Aldi baby bath I bought before he was born. We then hold him in the shower with us so he likes it and isn't afraid of the shower or anything. As soon as he can stand reliably he'll be in the shower.

Dyra · 28/02/2021 20:53

We didn't have a bath in our bathroom until DD was 14 months old. We used a schnuggle baby bath up until then.

SenoraSurf · 28/02/2021 22:14

I used the schnuggle bath with my ds until he was 13 months old (he was tall for his age too).

It's a fab bath, can be used from newborn to 1 year. Once he got a bit splashier I put him in the shower basin in the bath to help the clean up afterwards
