Breastfeeding and pregnancy

DH and I are TTC our second, I’m coming up to ovulation in our first month of trying. Obviously I know I might not actually get pregnant for ages but I was wondering about breastfeeding while pregnant.
DD is 20 months, and tends to only feed first thing in the morning anyway. But if I do get pregnant, are there likely to be changes in my milk, and if so, when will they appear? Is DD more likely to just stop feeding?

Hi OP, I've not got answers I'm afraid but I'm interested in this too!
I'm currently about 9+1 weeks with what will hopefully be my third and I'm still breastfeeding my 13-month-old. So far she doesn't seem any less interested in her milk though she only feeds three or so times a night (seems to be more of a comfort thing). Planning on feeding her until she's around 18 months but I wonder if she'll wean herself off before then.

How exciting for you, lots of luck with your TTC journey! Smile

As soon as I got pregnant, my milk dried up (but my son was nearly 3 anyway). I then breastfed until he was 3yr 3mo then had to stop as it was just too painful.
I did read it wouldn’t stop straight away but mine did - could be because he was older?!
Interestingly enough I barely have any colostrum now at 37 weeks & haven’t leaked once so now I’m worried I won’t be able to BF this baby!

I still had milk when I was pregnant, I think.. But breastfeeding got so painful that I weaned DS1 off. He was nearly 2.5 I think and also only fed first thing.

I’m 28 weeks and still feeding my 20 month old. If any thing she fed more last few months. Hoping to hand express colustrum prior to birth and then tandem feeding but going with her flow

Milk supply tends to reduce by about the 4th month of pregnancy, although it can be earlier or later than this. If you are feeding a lot, you may notice a reduction, but if you are only feeding once or twice a day, milk can dry up completely for some people (though not for everyone). The hormones can alter the taste of the milk slightly too. Some children/babies may notice this but others may not!

Interested in this also. Mine is 17months and I'm 5 weeks pregnant. I'd like to wean before I'm due but LO is a little boob monster still, no signs she will self wean. I'm hoping my milk will change and she won't like the taste as self wean

@iPhonie Don't worry! This is no reflection on whether you'll produce colostrum/milk once your baby arrives. It can be really hard for many women to express it before the baby is born. To reassure yourself, you can try getting all warm and cosy, massaging your breasts first, thinking about babies and then gently having another go at expressing... Have patience, it may take a few minutes and only a tiny bead may appear. Even if you get nothing, you'll still be fine once the baby is born. I struggled too to express antenatally, even after three children, but still had excessive amounts within minutes of my new baby's birth!

My DS went from 2-3 feeds a day to 1 feed a day soon after I got pregnant, then dropped to no feeds a day at 4 months. I had quite feeding aversion by 2 months pregnant, I could it really really hard to keep going feeding him even though I wanted as much close time with him as possible before DC2 appeared. DS was 9 months when I was PG with number 2

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’d forgotten about the pain, I don’t think I could cope with breastfeeding if my breasts hurt like they did last time!

I continued to breast feed my twins for the first 3 months of my next pregnancy. I had always planned to stop breastfeeding the twins at 1 yr old (as I was returning to work) so I stopped but only because I wanted to, not for any physical reason.
Remember to drink lots though.
