Heterotopic Twin Pregnancy - Hugs Needed

Hello everyone!

I have had a scan today done at what is approx 5wk6dys-ish and they have spotted two sacs, one in my uterus & one in my left tube - both empty thus far but its still super early.

I have had bloods done which show very high HCG levels for this point, suggesting a twin pregnancy is the case.

Until today I had no incline that there was two. Im all a bit of an emptional wreck - I have no bleeding (although a little pain, hence why I went in). I have to go back on Sunday for my 48 bloods to see whats happening there, and then next week go for another scan.

They said that there are a few things that can happen from here:

  1. We miscarry both.
  2. The eptopic gets absorbed & the uterine sac continues fine.
  3. They both grow and they have to remove the eptopic, which gives us only a 60% chance of keeping the uterine one.

I feel so sad that we are going to lose at least one, and an absolutely mess at the thought of losing both.

Google (and the doctors) tell me that this is super rare, (and of course would happen to me!), but was wondering if anyone had any comforting words to give?

I'm sorry OP, that's a lot for you to deal with. I'm afraid I don't have any experience of this but if both pregnancies do progress and you sadly have to deal with an ectopic pregnancy then I would find someone who is top of their field to carry out the procedure. Hopefully that would give the uterine pregnancy the best chance.

I did have a suspected ectopic that resolved itself so hopefully that will happen for you too.

Thankyou @Teakind its been an emotional rollercoaster of a day.

Im not a religous person, but I am praying that it gets absorbed and the uterine one continues. But then that makes me feel guilty, for hoping that the little thing just goes away :(

I just never expected this when I woke up this morning!

I don't think you should feel guilty in any way for thinking that. At 5 weeks its SO early it's just a very tiny half-a-pea sized cluster of cells that won't form into a viable foetus.

Best case you have one healthy growing foetus which is what you'd have probably expect to have without this early scan.

Hoping it goes well for you. I have had early miscarriages (and a heartbreaking V late MC) so at 5/6 weeks i'd still be very much in the 'cross my fingers and see what happens' stage. TTC & pregnancy are such emotional times, be as strong as you can. From bitter experience, don't get to attached to the idea of it being a baby until much further down the line Sad. Focus on what you can do, healthy food, plenty of sleep, folic acid etc.

Wow this does sound super rare. I had an ectopic last year and couldn’t imagine having a second in the balance. Really hoping for the best outcome for you xxx

Hi there,

I am so sorry to hear you're going through this. The same thing happened to me back in January, as rare as it is (1 in 20,000 i think!) I went for an early scan at 7 weeks as this is an IVF pregnancy so was overly anxious. I had a bit of pain on my right side close to ovary but no bleeding which also made me feel a bit uneasy. The sonographer could detect one embryo with heartbeat in the uterus and another in my right tube doing exactly the right thing but sadly in the wrong place. It's a complete shock to the system when you receive that news, I can totally relate... I did have 2 embryos transferred but wasn't aware this was even a thing that could happen!

The good news is with laparoscopic surgery they were able remove my tube without effecting Baby 1 whatsoever. I am now 14 weeks pregnant, and baby looking healthy and strong so far.

There is a very good chance of your pregnancy progressing, but I know that will not stop the worry and shock. Hang in there and stay positive and strong for your baby who still has a great chance! x
