I no some people have a glass of wine etc when pregnant. What's people's views on a 4% alcoholic drink?

Depends how much and how often

SpaaaaceGurl · 24/02/2021 13:58

No judgement here, but I personally just wouldn't take the risk.

I think those people who do are mostly at the end of their pregnancy when they know everything has been developed properly. Or it's a small sip to celebrate a special event.

I would definitely not advise anybody to touch a drop in the first 3 moths though.

WhattheCBGeebie · 24/02/2021 14:01

Official guidance is not to have any.

I tried a cocktail mixed with lemonade (probably about 4%) when 20 weeks pregnant. It made me vomit, then when I was silly enough to try again a few days later it had the same effect.

Didn't try in subsequent pregnancy Grin

Pre bfp's I drank a fair bit. I had half a glass of red wine when I was around 6mth with the eldest, the rest none after finding out I was pregnant. I've been teetotal for 3 years now so none at all with this baby.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 24/02/2021 14:15

I’ve had a small glass here and there. Very slowly and with food. I recommend the book Expecting Better, it’s very sensible and rational. Basically your own liver deals with the small amount of alcohol before it gets anywhere near the baby. I’d never have any more than a small glass.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/02/2021 14:15

Read Emily Oster’s “expecting better” for what is statistically safe for alcohol limits throughout pregnancy

Kiyentai · 24/02/2021 14:53

Have gone to some classes on alcohol syndrome in babies (I used to work in a substance use facility), one thing people do not realize is when you drink alcohol and are pregnant,it does not just pass through your system and you urinate it out as usual. The alcohol actually stays IN the amniotic fluid that your baby develops in. So while you may think a drink here or there, or even a small portion a day is okay, but your baby will be floating and developing in it for the remainder of the pregnancy which can cause developmental issues. It is the decision of the mother but I always advise no alcohol during pregnancy, its just not worth the risk imo.

Gennia · 24/02/2021 15:32

I didn’t believe what @Kiyentai (sorry to doubt you) wrote about alcohol remaining within the amniotic fluid, but it does seem to indeed be a route of reabsorption by the fetus.

This paper has more information about alcohol intake during pregnancy (figure 5 highlights the amniotic fluid and alcohol persistence). Quite interesting read:

Saying all that I’ve had two small glasses of wine (total) during this pregnancy so far (19 weeks). Probably will have more but going to try not to.

Yoshinori · 24/02/2021 15:35

Might be an mean thing to say but I 100% judge any woman who can’t not drink for 9 months for her own child. Sorry. Not sorry. Why risk it ?

shinynewapple21 · 24/02/2021 15:41

I drunk a small glass of wine once a week during second trimester (or whenever it is they used to say it was OK). This was 20 years ago so I imagine views and advice is probably different now.

Christ I didn’t know this would attract the anti-vaxxers Hmm

FTEngineerM · 24/02/2021 15:47

I looooove red wine usually, going off it is my first sign I’m pregnant because normally literally nothing would stop me enjoying a bottle glass but just cannot when pregnant.

User3covid · 24/02/2021 15:48

😂 @user7891011 I rolled my eyes so hard into the back of my head they might have to be surgically rolled back out 😂😂

JemimaTiggywinkle · 24/02/2021 15:54

I had a small glass of Prosecco on New Year’s Eve.. I didn’t enjoy it, just made me feel a bit hot and flushed and then felt a bit guilty.

I think if you drink enough to feel the effects then that’s too much. And if you don’t drink enough to feel the effect, then what’s the point?

LemonCrab · 24/02/2021 15:54

I didn't want to risk any at all.

Not worth it.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 24/02/2021 15:57

I love red wine with steak. So very occasionally I will have a small glass with that because it compliments the meal. Nothing to do with wanting to feel the effects of alcohol. One is enough and I’m never tempted to have more. I feel a bit left out when DH is having a few drinks so I’ll have that seedlip thing as a fake g&t, more for the social aspect of having a drink together.

lifestoooshort · 24/02/2021 15:57

I drank moderately through all mine - no issues

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2021 15:58

I had my children in the 90s and the advice was not to drink at all. So I didn't. I can't see why you'd risk it. It simply isn't worth it in my view. I must say, the champagne my lovely SIL sneaked into the hospital after DS1 was born tasted just amazing Grin

BlueberryPancake21 · 24/02/2021 16:45

OMG are people really comparing vaccines and alcohol?

Vaccines = extensively tested and safe in pregnancy
Alcohol = extensively researched and unsafe in pregnancy

Vaccines = proven to protect your unborn child from potentially life-threatening illness
Alcohol = tastes nice...

I had a couple of drinks before I knew I was pregnant but not since then as it's the NHS guidance. I don't see why I would when there's no benefit, a known risk and it's really easy not to. There are other tasty drinks out there!

Hadalifeonce · 24/02/2021 16:48

I had the odd glass of white wine/champagne with both of mine. Never more than 1, only about 3 in total duration.

ForeverBubblegum · 24/02/2021 16:48

With my first I was a bit pfb, and stopped drinking 3 months before ttc, and had very little for the next 2 years while breastfeeding. With second I drank before finding out I was pregnant, but non once I had a bfp.

I the 80's DM had anemia during pregnancy and was recommended to have a half of stout a week, fortheiron content. As it happens me and DSis are both fine, but I suspect that's just good luck.

AmandaHoldensLips · 24/02/2021 16:56

I had a WHOLE PINT of ale when I was 8 months gone. It was two halves actually, on a very warm day, and I was really really pissed off. My friend, who was also 8 months pregnant, took me to a lovely local beer garden and we went mad, had a pint each, and TWO MASSIVE PUDDINGS off the menu.

I felt like the devil incarnate, but it was a fantastic afternoon.

everydaysablessing · 24/02/2021 16:59

I wouldn't risk it personally, have had multiple mc and just not worth the potential guilt.

From what I can see advice, or at least attitudes, have changed in quite recent years. A lot of mumsnetters say to have a few while pregnant and nothing breastfeeding but the current advice is nothing when pregnant and some drinking while breastfeeding is ok.
