NT measurement - so worried

KTF367 · 23/02/2021 18:11

I had my 12 week scan today and they measured me at exactly 12 weeks which I found odd since previous scans have measured me earlier.
My NT measurement was 2.9mm and I am extremely worried. The sonographer didn't say anything but when I noticed the measurement I asked to speak to someone and spoke to the screening co-ordinator. We decided not to send my bloods for the combined screening since I'd already had the Harmony test privately last week (not got results yet). I am so worried and can't stop crying. I know it can be a sign of the trisomies or even heart problems.

Anyone with similar experiences or NT measurements that can provide some comfort?

Hi. The cut off for further testing is 3.5mm. Is there another reason why you’re so concerned with your measurement ?

WaterBottle123 · 23/02/2021 18:21

DD2 was 2.9mm, she's totally fine, it's a normal
measurement. Try not to worry!

KTF367 · 23/02/2021 18:24

I just knew it was high when I saw it and speaking to the screening co-ordinator she said it was higher than 95% percentile. I got so worked up and decided against the screening tests and just to wait for Harmony. They said at 2.9mm I'd be referred to the fetal medical unit for my 20 week scan (but the sonographer didn't do this?! It wasn't until I followed up)

I'm so worried about heart defects that won't be detected until 20 weeks.

Ummm, that’s within the normal range?

MamaT1992 · 23/02/2021 18:24

My baby was 3.6 and he's totally fine. Have my fingers crossed yours is too x

onedaysoonish · 23/02/2021 18:29

Hi my DS's was 2.9mm - did the blood stuff too and the results came out as high risk for Down syndrome. I'd also done the harmony test however, which came back as low risk for everything. The Dr said as the harmony test was much more accurate (because it actually looks at foetal DNA) we could ignore the other test. I wouldn't worry at all just wait for the harmony to come back.

WalkingMeAway · 23/02/2021 18:31

Are you in the U.K. ? NT measurement under 3.5mm is within the normal range.

My current pregnancy (third at 38) was 2.8mm and everything is fine.

The harmony test is very accurate. When are you due your results ?

KTF367 · 23/02/2021 18:34

Thank you everyone for your reassurances.

@onedaysoonish @MamaT1992 @WaterBottle123 so good to hear very positive stories.

I can't stop worrying about every little thing and I've never suffered from anxiety before but during pregnancy it's out of control.

@WalkingMeAway the harmony test should be back by next Thursday but that feels like so long to wait. I didn't even realise about the heart issues until I started reading up (always a mistake I know)

I'm in London

Mine was 2.7, he's a perfectly healthy 3 month old now

ThisMammaCat · 24/02/2021 00:39

Mine was 2.8 at 12w5days (changed to 13w1day at that scan). I'm nearly 29 weeks now, all looked good at the 20 week scan.

My results came in at 1 in 212 for down's and 1 in 100k for the other two after my NT was done, my age and high-ish HCG were to blame. I'm 37, HCG was 1.9 MoM. My PAPP-A was high too, 1.51 MoM. I bet if that had been a little low I'd have gotten a call. I wasn't worried because baby was looking good on screen, and was measuring ahead a bit, and I'd read that poorly babies are often measuring behind (though not all babies that measure behind are poorly).

3.5 is the cutoff for good reason, I know it's easier said than done, but try not to panic, that's not good for you or baby. Many women have had NT measurements higher than the 3.5 cutoff and their babies have been fine.

These lil babies sure do like to freak us out early on!

SunnySideUp2020 · 24/02/2021 04:17

Why not send bloods for papp A and hcg measurements?
The combined screening isn't just based on NT. And the other measurements are as important i thought. Even by themselves.
Harmony only tests for a couple of abnormalities...

But maybe i am wrong.

Cantchooseaname · 24/02/2021 04:25

Pregnancy anxiety is awful- I was referred to a specialist mental health midwife and it really helped me get through the last few months. Don’t suffer in silence- it’s really common. I look back on the things I obsessed and worried about now and I really had lost it!
Take care of yourself- sounds like the anxiety talking, not a genuine reason to be concerned.

WalkingMeAway · 24/02/2021 07:13

I agree with @Cantchooseaname that perhaps you should have a chat with your MW about anxiety. Otherwise you’ll spend the whole pregnancy anxious.

Your measurement is not within the range of concern, and combined with the bloods you will get a truer result. Also Harmony is pretty spot on so hopefully that reassures you.

All the best x

KTF367 · 24/02/2021 08:22

@SunnySideUp2020 in the end I declined the NHS blood tests because they test for the same as harmony but less accurately and they said they don't recommend to do the NHS test if you're doing Harmony - I decided 8/9 days of mild worry would be better than the possibility of getting bad results tomorrow and bring totally anxious until harmony results. If that makes sense?
