Dolmio cheesy sauce?!

It probably sounds really stupid but is dolmios cheesy sauce safe to eat when pregnant? I’m assuming that because it’s jarred it’s fine.

I can't think of any possible reason why it wouldn't be. If it's in a jar it's been heat treated etc.

WingBingo · 23/02/2021 16:52

All cooked cheese is fine. It’s unpasteurised cheese you can’t eat.

Bubblesxox · 23/02/2021 16:52

It was only because it’s cheese sauce and I know you have to be careful with milk and cheese to make sure it’s pasteurised.

What made you think it wouldn't be?

If in doubt again just check the NHS list. www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/foods-to-avoid/

If it wasn't pasteurised it would be absolutely gross left at room temperature on a shelf for months on end.

There's very little you can't eat in pregnancy, the link @pastabest (great username!) covers everything to keep an eye out for. And obviously don't eat anything you'd be worried about getting food poisoning from in normal times too, I didn't eat chicken done on the BBQ when I was pregnant first time unless we were at home and I never eat reheated rice either.

Bubblesxox · 23/02/2021 17:00

Yeah there’s so much now I wouldn’t trust eating that I wouldn’t have given a second thought about before. I stick to nhs list but when things say milk and don’t specify whether it’s pasteurised that’s what worry’s me.
But yeah where it’s got a long shelf life It’s got to be fine. thank you

If it uses unpasteurised milk it has to be labelled as using unpasteurised milk so no need to worry about that one. Try to avoid reading too much online from outside the UK. The food hygiene standards and labelling rules are really strict here so stuff that you are advised to not to eat in other countries is fine here (e.g. sliced ham etc).

8dpwoah · 23/02/2021 17:11

I think it's only cheese you'd probably get caught out with unpasteurised milk by accident but it will say on it if made with unpasteurised milk, just possibly not obvious unless you look at the ingredients. If it's a nice cheese there's a good chance it's off limits, I've found 😬 but the cheese board after birth is a real treat then!

Everything with unpasteurised (as in, raw) milk in it has to say so in the UK as far as I can remember.

@pastabest @8dpwoah
Oh I didn’t know they’d have to state unpasteurised if it wasn’t! The amount of things I’ve looked at and it’s just said milk and I’ve refused to have it haha. Thanks for that bit of information!

Also with regards to the cheeses, if they’re cooked to bubbling hot it’s also fine.

Even if it was cooked?? Confused

SmidgenofaPigeon · 23/02/2021 17:53

How on earth would a jar of sauce be unsafe in pregnancy Confused

8dpwoah · 23/02/2021 17:58

@raspberryk that a really good point too. DIY pasteurisation 😂

I wish I'd had one last beer and a lovely stinky cheeseboard before I got my BFP, but alas!
