Checking Cervix Length - What to Expect

I'm 17 weeks with my first. I moved locations recently, and previously the fact I had a LLETZ procedure wasn't taken particularly seriously, although truth be told I was advised I hadn't had enough off my cervix length to warrant any concern.

Am now in my new home and being seen by a different midwife/consultant etc who has decided my cervix length should be checked, which I do feel better about as would like the peace of mind of it being measured.

I just wanted to ask what to expect from this. Is this an internal scan? I'm assuming it's completely safe in pregnancy? Think I'm a little worried as wondering if it's entirely necessary as previous consultant said it wasn't, but overall I would worry more if it wasn't double checked!

So it should be an internal ultrasound with a empty bladder. Internal are more accurate to measure cervix, from my experience they take 3 measurements from the internal to external os and work from the shortness measurement. It take about 5 mins not painful slightly uncomfortable. My consultant always does a quick tummy scan to check baby's hb first, so a wee bonus that u get to see wee one. If you've had a letz they normally offer 2 scans first around 16 weeks.
Anything around 2.5 or under would warrant a stitch
I would say it's better to be safe than sorry and get checked

@boymum88 thanks so much for your reply, doesn’t sound like too much to worry about then! I’m 17+2 now so really hope I get my appointment soon. Think it got missed with moving from one county to another! X

I've had this done today - I also had LLETZ and wasn't even uncomfortable in fairness.

I've got a repeat appointment next month to double check everything

As pp said, it is better to be safe and I feel much more relaxed about things having been!

No worry's the app is really nothin to worry about, if uve not got an app in the next week or so I Would chase them up, as if u did need a stitch they will only put them in until 24 weeks x

@Twinkle1989 @boymum88 thanks for your replies.

I am a bit annoyed at how slow it's been so far. The referral was put in at 15+5 and I'm now 17+3. I left it a week to chase, and then called Monday and was told someone would call me back but nothing. Called again yesterday morning and initially they couldn't even find the referral, and then said it looked like the consultant needed to call me before an appointment could be made, so sounded like it had been forgotten about. I was going to leave it until tomorrow morn to chase again, but will call again today as did manage to speak to the consultant yesterday who said I need to be seen before 18 weeks, so that only leave a few days now! Do wonder how long it would have been left had I not chased it up. Fingers crossed they see me fairly promptly x

Good for you, don't take no for an answer some times u just have to push ( don't be rude but firm)

MintGreenLife · 24/02/2021 09:38

@boymum88 thanks, to be honest I've had to push to be seen about this anyway, as like I said in my previous area they weren't even going to do a scan to check the length at all. I'll let you know how I get on x

Hi @MintGreenLife- we were talking on my thread about cervix lengths!
Glad to hear you’re getting it checked, good luck and update us how it goes.
I drove myself a little crazy..I was scanned by sonographers and didn’t get to speak to anyone... I’ve since spoken to the consultant and feel reassured. Let me know if you have any questions...the scan is quick and painless, I’ve been told there are no risks to the baby.

@Dixie17 hi, glad to hear you’re getting on OK. Did they decide no intervention/treatment is needed? That was my main worry - whether it was safe or if I was pushing something that could have any risks to baby, but I’m glad that I’m going to be checked to be on the safe side. Seems kind of crazy to me not to check everyone that’s had a LLETZ! I’m going to chase up about the appointment this afternoon. Hopefully I’ll have it early next week latest x
