Passing large blood clots and bleeding in early pregnancy

So I’m now 13 weeks pregnant. At 12 weeks I passed to HUGE blood clots (the size of my palm almost) and at 11 weeks I had a lot of morning bleeding that filled the toilet. I went into the emergency department on both occasions to check baby. Baby seems well but I’m petrified as I have zero answers for the bleeding. I have a healthy teens 13 & 16. My husband has a healthy 6 year old. Unfortunately we have had two losses one in 2019 at 15 weeks and in 2020 at 8 weeks so needless to say I’m freaking out a little. Anyone else have similar experiences or get any answers for the unusual large clots and bleeding? I use a home Doppler daily to check the baby’s heartbeat but it’s still extremely unnerving.

So sorry you’re going through this, what did the doctor/midwife/sonographer say? Or did they not find out why?

I think if they can’t find the cause you should be having more regular scans at least? Xx

They couldn’t explain the bleeding but only took my bloodwork to text my pregnancy levels, white blood cells were slightly elevated but nothing of concern, they did an ultrasound on both occasions and baby was moving, breathing etc. Nothing on the scans to be alarmed. But no answers are making me worry significantly. No pain, no signs of infection, just very bloated. Ear doctors have no answers, regular Physician had no answers. I see the baby doctor March 2th but what if I still have no answers? Worried mama!

I am higher risk due to my age 39 however we’ve also done screening for abnormalities and the first one came back for being very low risk. So just as a precaution I went ahead for the secondary screening and sexing blood test, still waiting on those results however that still doesn’t explain the bleeding and large clots. 😔

Hi OP,

I cant help with a suggestion for cause of your bleeding, but if it is at all reassuring, i had a scan last week (8+5), and it showed a subchorionic haemorrhage - measuring bigger than the baby. The sonographer and assistant were very keen to tell me that I could expect bleeding at some point, and not to be alarmed. Apparently this can be left over implantation bleeding that I haven't passed. Sometimes these bleeds are reabsorbed into uterus lining and sometimes not. They both made a point to reiterate how common bleeding in early pregnancy is...and how most of the time baby continues to develop healthily.
I hope the bloods give you some reassurance, and best of luck

Oh wow that is good to know. I know there are many pregnancies that have bleeding and go on to have healthy babies. I’m hopeful that’s our case. I’m just overly worried with our two previous losses and the size of the clots. I’ve already had 3 scans in total but they never did say anything was abnormal or seen anything out of the norm. Congratulations on your pregnancy. 🤰We are still cautious but very excited.

So I had yet another scare last evening with large clots and was very uncomfortable. Between the 9 hours last night and another 5 hours today at the hospital it was determined I have a subchorionic hemorrhage. I have had 5 ultrasounds and 4 er visits to determine this. Thankfully today I have some answers and will follow up with my prenatal doctor next week.
