Large babies

I have been having growth scans and baby has always measured on the larger side but bump was measuring 43cm at 37 weeks so had a growth scan, and the result is that I am being induced in a few days.

My first birth was pretty traumatic.

I was feeling okay until they told me baby is already estimated 10lb.. I really want to avoid the complications of last time or a section however the thought of pushing out a toddler isn’t giving me much confidence.

I’m hoping the estimate is massively inaccurate Blush but has anyone had a successful induction with a large baby and everything’s been ok? Tearing? Shoulder dystocia?

Hi, I went into labour spontaneously with DS1 who was 10lbs 3oz. Without sounding like a complete dick, it really was a textbook delivery (for which I am very grateful) - water birth, teeny tiny graze but no tearing, everyone healthy and well

DS2 was an induction as I went overdue. It was intense but quick (less than 2 hours) He was smaller at jut 8lbs 8oz, but again, was all pretty straightforward - I used G&A and had a very minor tear that required a tiny stitch.

Best of luck!

My 3 were all over 9lbs, but not induced. All three had no problems, straightforward births. I always joked that babies were so huge to push out anyway you don't notice an extra pound or two in the moment, but maybe that's not true or helpful as I knew nothing else to compare it to.

I know someone whose first was over 10lb but not measuring big at all so they didn't know. She had a fine birth, some tearing but nothing to write home about.

I've also known lots of people on here for whom growth scans were wildly inaccurate. One of the women on my antenatal group was induced for a big baby but he was born at 7lb. So there's no telling really whether yours will be big or not.

Saying that, in your position I'd probably plump for a C-section regardless.

I had one 7lber and one 9lber and, for me at least, I definitely felt the difference!

It was a nudge, nudge, wink, wink “You’re having a big baby” from the community midwives.
The hospital totally failed to appreciate it and 3 days later an 11lb 3oz baby came via emergency C-section.
The obstetrician said during it: “I wouldn’t put him in baby clothes, get him straight into school uniform”.
It still makes me chuckle.

My just under 10lb baby decided to arrive 10 days early... It was a great, straightforward, quick birth towards elder sibling that took forever, assisted, tearing nearly e c section that was 1/2 lb lighter. It was almost as if my body finally did it right and baby obliged....
Which was great as if had been as late as first they were talking well over 11 lb so were going to induct at 39 weeks ... 🤦‍♀️😱

You really can't tell... And if you managed a delivery last time you could be as lucky as i was 2bd tine

My first was induced and was 11lb 3oz at 8 days overdue. They didn’t think he’d be big. It was fine - a vaginal birth with a small episiotomy.

Chelyanne · 23/02/2021 07:46

Our son was 10lb 12oz, 15 mins pushing and 2 episiotomy cuts as his shoulders got a bit stuck. Our daughter after him was 9lb 10oz and only took a few pushes but tore me (big head). Our eldest was an average 7lb 7oz had vontouse and episiotomy with her.

yahyahs22 · 23/02/2021 07:55

Mine was an average 7.3 and he teared me in 3 places so I don't think size is the issue!

PinkPlantCase · 23/02/2021 07:55

Do you want the induction OP? Of course there is absolutely nothing wrong with having one but I wasn’t sure if that was part of your worry. It might be worth talking through your last birth with them and understanding what steps they can put in place during the induction to help you feel more in control.

I’ve watched a lot of free birth videos, some that involve really quite large babies and they come out just fine! Just have slightly longer heads for a bit as they’ve been squeezed out Grin

SnooperTrooper12345 · 23/02/2021 09:51

My first baby was estimated from growth scans to be over 11lbs. So they induced me at 40 weeks. He arrived at 41 weeks at 6lbs8

My second I was induced because of waters leaking.
She was just under 10lbs.
I did have a 3rd degree tear however that wasnt just because of her size, that was combined with her shooting out 😂

BabyElephant2 · 23/02/2021 15:20

Thanks everyone, I’ve got a bit more confidence now.. I just don't trust the doctors or midwives at all as so much went wrong last time and they didn’t even tell me what had gone wrong or why and why DS was in ICU at the time, just wrote it on his discharge notes 2 weeks later and sent me on my way to “have a read”

I’m not sure if it’s the huge baby, loss of trust in doctors or induction that is scaring me to be honest! Blush

Other stuff happened to me because the doctors and midwives were too busy but I won't go into that part
I had an almost 10lb baby with labour being sped up with the drip ( I didn't know neither did the staff have any clue he d be that big) , had a 2nd degree tear and episeotomy but it healed brilliantly and so grateful not to have had a c section during covid times.
