3 recurrent miscarriages... what tests can be done!?

MrsBlue1986 · 22/02/2021 17:33

Desperate plea for advice!!

I have now had 3 miscarriages in a row, April last year at 5 weeks, August at 9 weeks and just now at 5 weeks.

I had lots of blood tests done after my 9 week miscarriage last year, and all came back normal except low progesterone.

So in my latest pregnancy which just ended, I took this progesterone, and yet it still failed!

So all my other bloods are normal: thyroid, blood clotting etc.

What other tests can be done!?? Im getting so tired of all of this. Im 35 this year and all I see is everyone getting pregnant so easily, and im just so depressed from it.

My husband said what about getting genetic testing done,? But then if we are incompatible, then thats even worse!!

I don't mind paying privately, but I don't know what for!?

Any help please!? Xx

So sorry for your losses @MrsBlue1986 🥺

I have also had 3 miscarriages, one in April last year, one in October (which was a chemical) and again in December.

I was referred to the NHS miscarriage clinic. I had tests done, my thyroid, all back clear, a blood clotting disorder, all back clear, a pelvis scan which showed my womb fine, lining around my womb fine, but they found cysts on my ovaries. Had a test for polycystic ovaries, again came back clear. I then had the appointment with the consultant and she was happy with my results, wasn’t concerned about my ability to get pregnant. So she just said in my future pregnancies to take progesterone pessaries twice daily. I felt a bit palm off with the “it was just bad luck” card

I am now 6 weeks pregnant and I’m on the pessaries. Have an early scan on Friday, so hoping it’s not my 4th loss. I am convinced it is as I’m not feeling many pregnancy symptoms.

Sending all my love to you and wishing you the best out come x

MrsBlue1986 · 22/02/2021 17:54

Thanks @MollySxx. Hope the scan goes well!

Im just getting p1ssed off thinking is it me? Is it my husband? Are we incompatible?? If we are, then what!

I hoped progesterone was going to work for me this time, but no such luck 😭 xx

Oh @MrsBlue1986 I am so sorry. It’s truly heartbreaking it really is.

I have also unfortunately suffered miscarriages - 4 within the last 12 months. 1 at 9 weeks and 3 at 6 weeks.

I was referred to a fertility specialist after my 3rd loss and had all sorts of blood tests carried out. Everything came back normal. My partner had a semen analysis carried out, again all normal, and I had a scan on my uterus and ovaries. All normal. Good follicle count etc.

I was told it was likely down to my age (38) and the fact my eggs aren’t of great quality anymore.

I was already taking 200mg of ubiquinol a day to help improve egg quality but didn’t really know what more I could do.

I then fell pregnant again and had read about taking a low dose of aspirin. I was reluctant to take it without getting advice from either my GP or the fertility clinic, but in the time it took anyone to get back to me (a week!) I miscarried again.

I swore to myself that if I fell pregnant again I would start on aspirin regardless as I felt I had nothing to lose anymore.

I actually then started 150mg aspirin from 1dpo on the next cycle. Amazingly I then got my bfp at 8dpo. Right from the start things just progressed brilliantly and felt different to all the other times. The lines got dark really quickly. It just felt better and more positive.

EPU scanned me at 5+4 and for the first time ever we saw a heartbeat! They also started me on cyclogest progesterone pessaries until 16 weeks even though my progesterone levels were great. I’ve since had several more early scans and baby is doing great. I’m now 9+1 and have another scan booked for the weekend.

I totally credit the aspirin for the change x

MrsBlue1986 · 22/02/2021 18:11

Wow @Moominmiss that's great that the asprin and progesterone are working!

Sadly I am allergic to asprin, i come out in a terrible rash, and progesterone clearly didnt work this time round for me.

All other bloods are fine, ultrasound looks fine. Getting my husbands semen analysis results tomorrow and going to ask the consultant what other tests we can try because Im getting so down and depressed with the whole thing! X

Sorry for your losses.

I went through the NHS recurrent miscarriage clinic after 3 losses and they found nothing and told me to just keep trying. After a fourth miscarriage I went to a private clinic that specialises in reproductive immunology who tested for a lot more than the NHS will and they found several issues. The tests they do are standard in the US, Australia and Canada but just not here.

I had treatment with them and now have a three year old and am 31 weeks pregnant with my second.

ivfbeenbusy · 22/02/2021 18:15

I had testing done at a recurring miscarriage clinic but found them pretty useless - they'll do blood clotting tests, thyroid, auto immune etc but that's it. Mine wasn't interested in testing progesterone levels, NK cell testing, karyotyping or sperm dna fragmentation.

I had to go to a private IVF clinic for that. In the end with did IVF with genetic testing and none of the embryos I tested were genetically normal

Took us multiple rounds of IVF to get pregnant again and stay pregnant x

somethingonthecarpet · 22/02/2021 18:15

I am sorry you are going through this. I had 3 consecutive miscarriages too, and testing showed nothing wrong. But the consultant put me on a prescription dose of folic acid, and as per moomin, a baby aspirin a day. Then she said as soon as I realised I was pregnant again, the progesterone pessaries.

All that did the trick. I now have a giant 13 year old. Smile

I hope this helps and just don't give up. Xx

@MrsBlue1986 I’m so sorry for your losses. I’ve had 4 losses in the past year. I’ve had thyroid, progesterone, blood clotting, immune antibodies test, AMH and an ultrasound of my womb and my husband had a sperm analysis all come back normal.
There is no such thing as you and your husband not being compatible. Karyotyping will only tell you if there is something wrong with your own dna. For example balanced translocation.

I had progesterone and aspirin in my 4th pregnancy and still miscarried. I was told that it meant that the pregnancy wasn’t viable and that’s why I miscarried again. I’ve been told by my consultant that inflammation has a lot to do with miscarriage and there’s studies and trials currently going on in Warwick hospital to see if antibiotics will help with this.
I would ask for a higher dose of progesterone and ask about steroids, clexane and aspirin too. As that’s what I will be prescribed if I get pregnant again

Cafeaulait27 · 22/02/2021 18:21

I’m so sorry. I’ve had 2 losses.

I’m now on 150mg aspirin with this pregnancy (since ovulation) and I’m now 6 weeks. I also just got a private prescription for progesterone.

Even though the clotting came back clear for you, would you consider aspirin next time just in case?

I may be wrong but I think I read on here recently that the blood can start clotting only when you’re pregnant, so if you were tested when you weren’t pregnant maybe it skewed the results?

Also I have heard about NK Cells, maybe that is something to do with it?

Really hope you get your 🌈

HarrietM87 · 22/02/2021 18:24

I had 3 losses. NHS tests found nothing. I paid privately for reproductive immunology testing (CRP clinic, Mr Shehata) and was prescribed steroids, progesterone and aspirin. Had my 2 babies on this treatment, and a miscarriage in between when I got pregnant accidentally and wasn’t on the meds, so convinced it was needed. Recurrent miscarriage is horrible - wishing you all the best.

Moominmiss · 22/02/2021 18:36

Oh yes, same as @somethingonthecarpet I also started taking a high dose of folic acid (5mg), and a high dose vitamin d.

Grognonne · 23/02/2021 08:44

Hi, am sorry for your losses. I have also had three miscarriages. I have been with the recurrent miscarriage clinic since miscarriage 2. They have been amazing. I have had hormone checks, karotype tests, lupus anticoagulant tests, many ultrasounds, MRI scan, dye tests, plus semen tests etc. I tested positive for lupus anticoagulant, they also found a uterine septum (not diagnosed until miscarriage 3, so they can be hard to spot). I had it removed after the 3rd miscarriage. I was prescribed tinzaparin after miscarriage 2, but sadly lost #3. This was tested and revealed to be a one off genetic issue so nothing would have helped. This time round I am still on the tinzaparin and 150mg aspirin. I also took cyclogest until week 16 and had a course of metronidazole around 8/9 weeks. They gave me scans every 2 weeks from 6 weeks. Although this was reassuring, it was still nerve racking as I had seen a heartbeat with the last two, so I knew anything can happen. I am now 28 weeks and things are looking ok, still nervous, but feeling a bit more confident. Have you been referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic? If not, get in touch with your hospital, it has been a lifesaver for me. Did you get the product tested from you last miscarriage as you are allowed to ask for that to be done and it may give some insight into what’s happened. This led to the karotype tests in my last one, but was shown to be anomaly and the tests were fine. I wish you all the luck in the future.

MrsBlue1986 · 23/02/2021 15:52

Thanks@Grognonne.

I had the results from my husbands sperm analysis today, which showed low mobility and morphology?! I dont know if this is necessarily linked.

I was referred to a private hospital that also works with the nhs, and the consultant has done some generic tests on me. Im going to do the AMH ovarian reserve one, despite my age at 34, its still worth a shot! Other than that theyve recommended a tissue biopsy of my uterus whicu is £1500 and a chromosome 14 test which is £400 and done in America apparently.

Thing is... I don't know if each of my miscarriages are caused from the same issue. I have had 2 very early 5 week ones and one that lasted until 8 weeks with a heartbeat. so its difficult to tell if its all from the same cause. We can obviously get pregnant but it's just not sticking 😔 xx

Hi @MrsBlue1986. I don’t know what caused my first two miscarriages, but the last one was a chromosomal issue. If the eggs or the sperm aren’t up to scratch then the foetus won’t develop. All mine, like yours, were early between 8-10 weeks. I also had the reserve test done, which was normal, and husband’s sperm test was normal, but I didn’t have a test for egg quality which is probably more pertinent. I’m a similar age to you, and it’s frustrating knowing fertility is declining whilst having the pressure of trying and multiple miscarriages. There are so many things that can be done, so please don’t lose hope. An IVF-lite might be an option as they would be able to pick a viable foetus if sperm and/or egg quality is a problem. I hope you get some answers soon. Although the sperm test wasn’t the news you were hoping for, at least it’s something to focus on. When I had the septum diagnosis, it was a relief in a way as there was an issue that could be sorted (although nobody can say for definite why these things happen), and better than before when we were just told everything was normal and it was just unlucky. Good luck!!

Hi , I know this post is about a year ago . Was this dr shehata you saw ? We have been referred to him. hoping for a miracle after enough losses xx

Mamabear2413 · 12/09/2023 11:03

Hi there, I know this post is quite old but wanted to ask if you could pls share which clinic this was as there are long waits on the NHS for initial appts? Thank you!

BabyHope1 · 12/09/2023 12:31

So sorry for your losses and anxiety OP. I also had one blighted ovum, 2 chemicals and one early miscarriage. None have shown a ln embryo. None of the tests, including genetic (which are quite expensive) showed what the problem could be.

My dr prescribed a combination of pills for me to take as soon as I got a BFP. She knew about it from a pacient that was prescribed this in a fertility clinic. Folic acid 5mg, baby aspirin, and a combination of steroids with a medication mainly used after a transplant, to prevent the body from rejecting and attacking the baby. I am quite stressed still, also because I don't know if the medication could cause side effects. But now I should be around 25w + and I'm really hoping things will be ok.

Fingers crossed you get your solution as well as soonas possible.
